"Blue birds in the bright summer sky."
It was supposed to be a simple mission, the intel was clean and the parameters were clear. Rescuing hostages always comes with a certain cautiousness of course but you two were always good at it. The trust between you two made you perfect partners for these kinds of situations, the ability to read each other's mind with a simple gaze across the room has proven to come in quite handy.
This time was no different, as he kneels down to talk to the poor woman who found herself in this distressing situation and immediately began to tend to her wounds you'll cover for him. As always.
Your eyes are locked on the door, the only entry and your only exit. And you begin to listen for steps, for quiet whispers or anything that could warn you of any threat that may come.
And then you hear it. 'How unfortunate', you think. A small klick and metal hinges burrowing deep into the wooden walls.
Cluster charges are always one of a kind.
You turn to assert your position, Doc is still occupied with the hostage behind you and the only thing that could protect them from the blast is the old armchair you quickly pull in front of them.
You scream to brace themselves, as you jump for the next closest cover.
Then the charge goes off.
Suddenly everything is quiet, the explosion must have been right next to you. You can see Doc pull his gun but you don't hear when he shoots. Breathing is hard, there is dust everywhere. You wonder how he can still aim at the enemy.
You close your eyes, the ringing in your ears just started and has gotten quite loud. Someone grabs your shoulder.
You try to move but your arms hurt. 'Open your goddamn eyes', the only thought in your head. Eventually you manage, you have to.
Doc is crouched over you. He talks, his mouth is moving but you still can't hear anything.
Your gaze is slipping to the hostage in the corner of the room. Gustave is checking your wounds, but you're not sure. You don't feel anything. That woman, you feel sorry for her. Her day must have gotten so much worse. You hope that someone comes to help her.
Gustave moves your head. You look into his face, his eyes scream with panic. You have never seen him like this. You try to tell him that everything is fine. You try to, but only blood leaves your mouth.
You want to laugh. Your vision blurs. At least you're not the only one crying today, is your last thought as your conciousness slips.
