TikTok chose to shut down US access both earlier than the federal ban mandated (it would start tomorrow, 1/19/25) and in a further-reaching manner than the ban intended (it would have prevented Apple & Google from allowing updates but left the app intact on people's phones).

Am I the only person thinking this is just a two-year-long piece of security theater? The desired outcome has never been to ban the app, but to force the Chinese owners to sell it. Either Musk or Zuckerberg will end up owning tiktok, and it'll become an alt-right pipeline just like twitter. It occurs to me they'll have a trifecta: Fox News (and Facebook) for old people, Twitter (and Threads or Meta or whatever it is) for the midrange, and Tiktok for the youth. Vertically integrated propaganda!

(Bonus points if they don't bother to audit and overhaul the code and whatever security risk it does actually pose stays there.)
