jxmesalexander:
âI have to go back.â There wasnât a thought in her mind. Even if it was with Max, she couldnât just leave. Not that she hadâ responsibilities and things holding her there, she just wanted them. âI donât want you to be crazy.â She was still crying. it couldnât be helped. âI just, I want you to love being places.â After all this time, she finally put her arms around him, but instead of a beginning it felt a lot more like an end. âThereâs this place.â She said between breathes, âIn Australia on the Gold Coast. Andââ She paused, sniffing back snot that was dangerously close to dangling. âIn the rocks on the far edge thereâs a rock with my initials and 2010 carved in it. If you take that.â She had to pause again to catch her breath, âIf take it and go the lifeguard stand and give it to them, theyâll give you the best surprise.â She looked up to him, eyes red tears practically forming a rive down her cheeks, âOn your travels. If you ever make it that far.âÂ
The moment Max felt Jamesâ arms coming around his middle, his own complied by wrapping around her shoulders once again to tuck her wet face into his chest. This hurt him more than he really expected it to. There was a bond between them that rooted back to decades before this moment, and yet, Max had never experienced intimacy quite like this with her before, it still managing to be sweet and pure, just like her. âIâll find it,â he murmured readily against her hair, before moving his hands to cup her face so he could place another deep, careful kiss against her wet lips in an effort to show her what they could have been if their desires could have been aligned at the right time, before pulling away, lips resting one more kiss against her wet cheekbones as he murmured. âIâll send for my things in the morning. Iâll write you. Send you some tickets, in case you change your mind.â And with that, he reluctantly pulled away, unable to look at her again before moving out the door toward the cab that was idling outside, forcing himself to not look back as his own eyes started to burn with the idea of what couldâve been.Â
jxmesalexander:
She just wanted him to change his mind. Say it was a joke and he was kidding. Instead, she felt his lips on hers, and her stomach dropped. She felt it everywhere, and whileâ any other timeâ any other circumstance and him doing that would have felt like butterflies. Shooting around harassing her gut. Instead it felt like bricks, pulling her down, making the tears only come stronger. âI canât.â The words were blubbered out. âWhy canât we just go back?â She was almost begging. She could barely make out breaths, getting gasping ones in between the words. âMax. Letâs just go back.âÂ
Max left his forehead onto hers, flinching at the sound of her words blubbered between choked sobs. The sound was almost enough to have Max disregard everything and just follow her anywhere, even if that meant going back to Lanford. To the place where he was expected to carry an entire family name on his back. To be stuck in one place for the rest of his life. Max couldnât do that anymore, for his own mental health. It was time he saw the world. It was time he left curtain drawn condos and luxury cars he devoted his life to looking at in a parking garage. But what he wanted most of all was for James to come with him. To show him how beautiful the world could be like she had successfully done already. âI canât,â he murmured, voice trembling just about as bad as her own. âI canât go back there. Not now. Not after this weekend with you. Iâll go crazy.â
jxmesalexander:
âNo.â She looked down now. She couldnât look at him. He wanted this, he wanted this so bad, she could hear it in his voice. But sheâ she wanted to go back. She wanted to give that life a try. The concrete one, the one where she had roots and not wings. Sheâd been all over the world, and she loved it, she couldnât deny that. But at the same time, she wanted something new. If it had just been after sheâd gotten out of rehab with the bad news she would have said yes. But her life was shaped differently now. She was figuring out how to live without it. âI canât.â She looked up to him finally, tears soaking her blue hues, âI have to go back. Letâs just go back.âÂ
Max couldnât handle it. The rejection. For a man who was used to getting whatever he asked for, the fact that what he actually wanted the most was slipping from his reach was the hardest thing for him. He cut her off before she could say anymore with his lips coming to meet her own in a desperate, needy kiss, leaking with a sort of depth that Max had never been able to muster before. His throat was tight. He could taste painful saltwater rolling down her plump lips and onto his own. He had to resist the urge to wrap his arms around her frame and refuse to let go. Yet, when their lips parted for air after god knows how long, Max could only muster one last plea in a soft, trembling whisper;Â
âPlease.â
jxmesalexander:
Her eyes traced his face. He was seriousâ no he was more than. âMax.â Her voice was barely above a whisper. âI canât. I canât justâ do that.â She swallowed the lump forming in her throat, âIâve already done that. Iâve already travelled across the country in the truck. Iâve already lived in the compound, Iâve already lived here. Iâve justâ Iâve done all of that.â Not only had she done it all, but thinking about it all made her ache. âThat is my adventure.â The words came out choked. âWe have to go back.âÂ
âYes you can, James. Please.â His smile was gone now, yet his hands remained on her flawless features despite himself. There was no way he could go back to Lanford, go back to wasting his life away inside a dark room all the time. He was depressed there. But... But here, with the air crisp and world gorgeous, he didnât feel that way. âBut we can have another one.â He whispered after a long time, eyes searching her own, pleading. âWe can leave the country. We can go to Europe. Disappear in the south of France. James... Please. You and me.â
jxmesalexander:
âWhat?â She said it again, the look still on her face, this time however, she didnât understand why. âI have to go back.â She shook her head, âI canât stay here. I have the truck.â And the new life she was trying to make. One that wasnât in a beach town to remind her every day that she couldnât surf. âI canât go back to Hawaii either.â She frowned, âWe have to go back, silly.âÂ
âNo you donât. Thatâs the beauty of it, James --- you donât have to do anything. We can get the truck and just drive. Drive anywhere. Come on.â His smile was starting to fade into a soft simper, his hands moving to cup her face in effort to paint the prettiest picture he could with his words. âThink about it. Just you and me, going anywhere we want. You cook, I drive. We go where we want, whenever want. Every day can be like this, James.â His voice lowered, an almost sort of pleading desperation escaping him as he took a step closer, forehead moving to push against her own. âCome on. Itâd just be one big adventure. You and me. Peter and Wendy. I just canât go back there.â
jxmesalexander:
âWhat?â She looked up at him confused. âNot go back? We canât. Itâs the last weekend.â They werenât going back. He made no sense.Â
âNo,â he said quietly with a laugh and a shake of his head. âLetâs not go back to Lanford.â He pulled away only a little more, his hands on her shoulders, unable to stifle or shrink how big his grin was. âLetâs stay in California, or go to Hawaii. Letâs go to the tent city. Wherever you want to go.â
âHi.â Her voice was small, the usual. When he put his arm around her, she easily pushed herself into it. Being around him was easy. It was like she was a kid again, and she liked that, more than she wanted to admit. âMine was good!â She flashed him a carefree smile. âI met some cool people, saw some great stuff.â Here she was still James Alexander. It seemed anywhere there was a town close to the beach they never forgot her. She was still surfing extraordinare. She had been taking pictures and doing autographs all dayâ she loved it. âMake it better? How could you make it better?âÂ
âThatâs good,â he mused, dimpled cheeks more pronounced when she shot her signature carefree smile up at him. She had won. She had brought the grumpy, apathetic, pessimistic rich boy out of his shell and into a life he could appreciate, just like that. Any doubt that the girl tucked away into him didnât have at least a few magical properties was completely dismissed. Pulling back only a bit so he could look directly into blue hues, Max offered her a lazy yet genuine grin. âLetâs not go back.â

Sheâd got his text, but didnât really worry about it. It was a lot, it was art, music, foodâ people got lost here. She knew she had. However, after seeing Joywave she was all but partied out. It was a good time, she had fun and she was happy she brought Max, more so that he agreed to go. The blonde had made it back before Max had, so she was waiting, but she didnât mind. It felt good to just relax, get off her feet. When she heard his voice, she yelled back, âIâm in here.â She said, however moving to him. âDid you have a good day? â
âJames,â he said for the third time in less than a minute, this time it escaping him with an exhale of relief when he saw her form appear in the doorway of the living room, his revelation only reinforced with seeing her. Moving across the room with three easy strides, he had James tucked easily into his arms, the height difference not stopping him from ducking his face into the crook of her neck. Max wasnât a very affectionate guy, only really exhibiting touch when his body and mind couldnât help themselves. This was one of those rare instances. âThere you are,â he whispered quietly, the exhaustion from his day and the heat radiating off into her, it seemed. It was easy enough, though --- James brought out a side of him he had struggled to see before. They had a deep rooted connection he often struggled to put into words. âI had a great day,â he murmured, still refusing to let go of her, his question resting at the tip of his tongue. âHow was yours? I bet I can make it better.âÂ

Max had had the weekend of his life. What started out as blatant skepticism and an excuse to get out of town with James, had turned into three days of music, people, and self revelation for the Radcliffe Heir. It had brought him back to childhood, running freely with James in the tent city. Coachella was the tent city, only Max and James were older now with responsibilities, tragedies even, shared between them; and yet, James still managed to bring Max back to his eleven-year-old self. It was what made Max realize that he didnât want to go back to a world where heâd rather be inside, sleeping his life away. He wanted to be free. And he wanted James to come with him.
Max had texted James that he would meet her back at the Airbnb later in the evening, for he had lost her in the crowds with a group of hippies he had sipped some âspecial teaâ with earlier in the day. When the effects wore off, his revelation still pulsating in the forefront of his mind, he got his newfound friends to drop him off at their place so he could find James and take her with him. âJames?â he called out when he managed to open the backdoor in the dark, even managing not to trip and fall into the pool. âJames? Where are you?âÂ
sodaniels:
âIf you wanted a kiss, you shouldnât have called me that asshole.â
âFine. Ex-braceface. So where have you been?â
jxmesalexander:
âOh goodness.â She shook her head, getting into the drivers side she looked up finding the button to put the top town, only to press it, letting the ragtop fold up behind them. âYou canât drive.â She shook her head, pulling a rubberband from her wrist to tie her hair back, keeping it from sweeping it in front of her face while she was driving, âLast time you drove, I almost died. And like, I donât wanna die again.â She reached her hand out to pat him on the shoulder, a grin spreading across her face and into her cheeks if that was even possible. âAre you ready?â She looked over at him, fully this time, putting the car into drive, âBecause like, Iâm the most ready I have ever been ever.âÂ
â---- Whatever.â He rolled his eyes and scoffed with grin playing at his lips, not even able to argue with that. He had private drivers all his life, so there wasnât much need to get behind the wheel himself. Max slid on his Ray Bans, flashing her a rare toothy smile. Max didnât typically like leaving New York, but being stuck in Lanford again had him having a bout of cabin fever. The sun was just what he needed, and it was clear in the way he couldnât even pretend to be grumpy since they landed. âIâm ready. Iâm hella ready. Weâre going to the Airbnb first, right? To get unpacked and dressed and all? By the way, youâre going to have to dress me in all the hippie-bohemian stuff we bought. I have no idea how to accessorize all that.â
âYou know I got tha sauce. You know Iâm saucaaaaay.â
ashley-tate:
âSo youâd want a lazy wife to compliment your sloth tendencies? ââ What if you get hungry and she becomes too lazy to cook too? Canât rely on take out forever.â A subtle laugh emitted from Ashleyâs lips as she crossed her arms. âOr you could⌠But thatâs if you have a fat wallet.â
âOh, weâd get a private chef, for sure. Iâve thought about this too many times before to not have the solutions. Iâm rich enough to never leave my couch and I thank God every day for that.â
