As a current graduate student in social work, I find myself surrounded by individuals who are interested in the privatization of social problems and are relying solely on the medical model as an intervention strategy within a private practice setting. I am creating this blog to mobilize a community of social workers who are interested in community-oriented practice, macro-level policies and institutional forces, and a social justice focus. This is not meant to exacerbate the already existent polarization between micro and macro-level practice, nor is it meant to denigrate the importance of the client-social worker relationship formulated within a therapeutic setting. Rather it is a forum for individuals to share resources, experiences, research, and current news articles that address structural change and transformative cultural shifts that promote social justice in our society. Thus, it is a forum that addresses issues often proven to be invisible within mainstream social work literature. Submissions welcome.

by Mia McKenzie Two days ago, the Supreme Court repealed the segment of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that functioned to guarantee that communities of color have equal access to voting rights as white communities. On the same day, the court dealt a blow to the 1978 Indian Child Welfare Act, a federal law intended to keep Native American children from being taken from their homes and typically adopted or fostered by non-Native American parents. Yesterday, that same Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8 , clearing the way for LGBT couples to access marriage rights. It's possible that there has never been a week in the Supreme Court that so blatantly demonstrates which groups are a priority and which aren't when considering the lives and liberties of US citizens.
