the first time yuuji hears you laugh, like really laugh, he stops what he’s doing mid-motion, like someone hit pause.
after that, it’s over for him. because suddenly your laugh becomes this tiny sun he keeps orbiting. you’ll be talking, and he’s already watching your mouth like he’s waiting for it. you’ll smile at your phone, and he leans over like, “what, what— show me,” not because he’s nosy, but because he wants to be part of whatever makes you sound like that.
and he starts doing it on purpose. the corniest jokes. the worst impressions. the most unnecessary dramatics. he’ll commit to a bit so hard you’d think his life depends on it, just to get that one sharp burst of laughter out of you. and when it happens, his whole face changes.
as if he had just remembered something good exists.
sometimes he doesn’t even join in right away. he’ll just stare for half a second, smiling like an idiot, like he’s taking a mental screenshot. then he laughs too, big and loud, because how is he supposed to not when you’re doing that?
and he’s so obvious about it, too. you’ll laugh and he goes, “again,” immediately, like a kid asking for another push on the swings.
you’ll cover your face, cheeks hot, and he’ll catch your wrists gently and pull your hands down like he’s rescuing the moment.
“no, don’t hide,” he says, softer now. “i like it. i really like it.”
bad day? your laugh still gets him. crowded room? he still finds it. he’ll hear you from the other side of the room, and you can practically see his shoulders drop, like his body finally unclenched.
like your laugh is proof you’re okay. like it’s proof he’s okay, too.
