Mothers and Daughters-1
MS Subbulakshmi (MS) was one of India’s most famous and celebrated singers. Her mother, Shanmugavadivu (note that the S in MS is her mother’s name) was a famous veena player. Pic 1 is of her mother, Pic 2 of MS playing her mother’s veena in 1945. MS really seemed to love puff sleeve blouses, a number of her early photographs have her wearing the style.

‘Tabla Feedback’ by Seema Lisa Pandya 2016 is an installation art piece made from almost 100 used tabla puris (the skins of the Indian classical tabla drum) donated by tablas schools (Taalim School) and many musicians. Each round 'puri’ has had hundreds of hours of concentrated practice by musicians until the skin is no longer usable. The skins are woven together into the form of a large funnel feeding back into itself representing the conical form of sound/ music and the dynamic dialogue nature of the 'Jugalbandhi’. Jugalbandhi literally means ‘entwined twins’. In Indian classical music it refers to a duet between two melodic performers with percussion. This was installed as part of Brooklyn Raga Massive’s Residency at Pioneer Works in Red Hook Brooklyn - 5’-0"x 5’-0"x 5"-0" by Seema Lisa Pandya 2016 http://www.seemalisapandya.com/installation/

“My sons and I, we wish to give all listeners that joy and beauty and hope so they can feel it in their souls. It can help people like medicine. The sound goes inside and the soul accepts it - some people feel happy, somebody cries, and all of it is good.” - Ali Akbar Khan, Pacific Sun article by Steve Heilig, 19 February 2015

Malkauns is a raga in Indian classical music. It is one of the oldest ragas of Indian classical music.
The name Malkaush is derived from the combination of Mal and Kaushik, which means he who wears serpents like garlands — the god Shiva. However, the Malav-Kaushik mentioned in classical texts does not appear to be the same as the Malkauns performed today. The raga is believed to have been created by goddess Parvati (the wife of Shiva) to calm Shiva, when the lord Shiva was outraged and was not calming down after Tandav in rage of Sati’s sacrifice.
Malkaush belongs to Shaivait musical school; in fact most pentatonic ragas belong to Shaivait musical school.
Malkauns is a serious, meditative raga, and is developed mostly in the lower octave (mandra saptak) and in a slow tempo (vilambit laya).
The best time for this raga is late night. The effect of the raga is soothing and intoxicating.
vintage raga classic!
