Matt Damon explains why they donât make movies like they used to. Pls watch.
This is actually a really good perspective and explains why the MCU is the way it is. It is essentially one-off entertainment without the backup of DVD sales (of course Disney being Disney it is still backed up by massive merchandise and spin off sales). The movie is designed to be âdisposableâ. The rewatch value is low because itâs not intended to be sold on DVD for people to treasure and rewatch every year at Christmas (or whenever) with family. The idea is to generate hype, through manufacturing controversy or teases or gossip. Keeping spoilers under wrap is integral because the rewatch value is negligible. It hinges on surprise or shock (or wtf value) to entice audiences to give up their money to see it in theatres. It is about spectacle, about being loud and colourful and busy, so that for the first 30 minutes after you walk out your senses are still buzzing and you feel like that was worth your $30 or however much. It takes a while for your brain to come back online after the sensory overload to then try to pick apart the plot, and by that stage it doesnât matter, youâve already hyped it up to your friends.
And the story or characterisation doesnât matter because no one is watching that again to care.

Alright, I need to have a chat with the teenagers that follow me, specifically regarding lying about your age and nsfw content. This isnât directed at anyone, but I think itâs a convo that needs to be had in general.
I was a teenager once. I get it. Everyone lies about their age online. Maybe not to other people, but Iâm sure every minor has clicked a âyeah, sure, Iâm 18+â button at some point in their lives. Iâm not here to shame you for that.
What I am here to say is it is vital that teenagers understand the difference between engaging in sexual content independently (ie, entering a fake birthday to access 18+ content), and lying about your age to engage in sexual activities with others online (joining discord servers/using nsfw channels intended for adults only/lying about your age to talk to nsfw content creators/commissioning nsfw art/etc).
Lying about your age to a website so you can look at porn is one thing. Itâs an entirely independent experience, where the only consent that really matters is yours. Nobody has any power over you in this situation, and thereâs about no chance of legal consequences.
However, lying about your age to other human beings is extremely different. If youâre engaging in nsfw roleplay with a friend about the same age as you, talking about sex with other teenagers, sharing nsfw fics among friends, thatâs one thing. But do not lie about your age to engage in sexual activities/discussions. Not only is something that could have actual legal ramifications, and very serious ones depending on whatâ going on, but itâs a violation of the other peopleâs consent. The moment other real people are involved, you need to be respectful of their boundaries & what is and isnât appropriate for you to be engaging with. If they say no minors, I donât care if youâre 17.5, you stay out until you are 18 years old.
Examples of situations where it is never okay to lie or mislead anyone about your age online include:
Joining/accessing nsfw channels or servers on discord.
Yes, I know itâs very easy to just click that little red button on discord that lets you access the channel youâre so curious about. It looks just like the one you see on adult websites that you click without thinking.
Donât do it.
If channels are 18+ then you stay out of them. There are other real life human beings involved who did not give consent to have a minor in an adult orientated space.
Engaging with nsfw creators/content directly
ie, commissioning nsfw artwork, following or talking to nsfw creators whoâve asked for no interactions from minors/flagged their accounts as 18+ only, subscribing to nsfw creators on patron, nsfw roleplay, etc.
Joining/engaging with adult only communities, like Fetlife or cam sites.
Engaging in romantic and/or sexual online relationships
Any time you are talking with one or more other real human beings, particularly any adults, in a sexual context.
I know that adult websites have basically trained teenagers to just say theyâre 18 and move on, but it is vital that teenagers understand that it is never okay to lie about your age when directly engaging in any kind of sexual activity. Knowing peopleâs age is a vital part of consent, and if an adult is found to have been engaging in sexual activity with a minor, they could face life long legal consequences. Not only that, but a basic facet of consent is clear, honest communication. If you are lying to a partner, then you do not have consent. Lying about your age is a huge violation of consent.
Thatâs not to say you can never mention sex around adults online. There are times and places where you may be asking for advice, or even just making jokes about sex or whatever. Thatâs all well and good, so long as everyone is on the same page. Itâs on adults to make sure that we are behaving appropriately around minors online, and make sure that weâre setting boundaries in those relationships. But itâs on minors to communicate that they are minors, and respect those boundaries that are set.
So, tl;dr,
Lying about your age to access a porn site is fine. Lying about your age to engage in sexual situations/adult-only spaces where other real human beings are involved is not.
I remember being at a con ages ago and witnessing a minor and her friend DEMANDING access to 18+ material in the Artist Gallery, saying that sheâd seen much worse on the internet so the artists were being both unfair AND stupid not letting her view it. They said youâre right, we canât prevent you from looking at smut on the internet, so feel free to go back to your room and do that
I think that anecdote perfectly demonstrates the point of disconnect:
The 2 teens demanded to see the nsfw material on the grounds that theyâd seen worse, they could handle it.
Teenagers who do these things think that âdonât lie about your ageâ is about their protection. And they object bc they feel that they are perfectly safe doing it.
But itâs not about them. Itâs about the people they are lying to.
If this is you, please realize: This is not a case of adults trying to baby you. Itâs not about whether anyone thinks you can handle it. Itâs about the fact that they donât want it. These adults are protecting their own boundaries, not trying to set yours.
I think people really underestimate how fucking evil a large chunk of American Christianity is, when they try to say to antichoicers âwell if youâre against abortion, at least you should support things like WIC and SNAP, so that women facing an unplanned pregnancy can still feed their future kidâ
Iâll be blunt, to American Christians like this, âbut single mothers and their kids will starve!â is the entire fucking point. Being ostracized by your family and community and left for you and your bastard child to starve alone in abject misery and deprivation is what they believe the Godly punishment should be for being âunchaste,â and that things like food benefits and contraception are destroying moral society because they let women have unapproved sex without being as controlled by the fear of being cast out to starve with an unwanted kid (this also heavily ties into misogynist racism against woc, especially black women, who are accused of being âwelfare queens,â draining good, properly chaste white Christians with kids born from their supposedly mindlessly lustful and irresponsible behavior, that can only be kept in check with threats of starvation or violence).
âWomen (especially woc) cannot overcome their base urges and live virtuous lives without being heavily trained and coerced by threats of deprivation, isolation, and violenceâ is one of the most important unspoken ground rules of reactionary movements, both religious and secular
Evangelicals have no long-standing theological problem with abortion. My parents have been married for longer than evangelicals have been against abortion. Evangelicals in the 1970s didnât care about abortion. Being against abortion was a Catholic thing. Evangelicals thought abortion is unfortunate, but not evil.
What changed?
Bob Jones v. US (1983).
Bob Jones University, an evangelical school, had a segregationist dating policy. It means what you think it does - they wouldnât allow white students to date black students. They also wouldnât admit black students who supported interracial marriage. This was in the mid-70s. Loving v Virginia was nearly a decade in the rearview mirror. The government threatened to revoke their tax-exempt status as a university unless this Jim Crow shit stopped. The school sued, and this eventually went to the Supreme Court. The Court, unsurprisingly, agreed with the government.
What was clear to evangelical leaders, then, in 1983, was that out-and-out racism was no longer going to be tolerated. What could they focus on that would have the same effect? What could rally the base without openly espousing racist views?
Reagan, with his âwelfare queensâ dog-whistle politicking gave them a like-minded politician glad of their support. And Surgeon General C. Everett Koop was only to happy to tell people what he thought of abortion.
So here we are, thirty-five years later, with every evangelical doing their damnedest to pretend that evangelicals have always been against abortion. Theyâve lied themselves into believing it, and now they claim theyâre against birth control too. Thatâs even more spurious - If they actually thought life begins at conception, then birth control would be a necessity, because fertilized eggs being rejected is the norm. Most of what they want to call human life never even gets implanted in the womb, or lasts very long if it does. And if they cared about life, welfare programs ought to be the most important, to ensure everyone has a good standard of living worthy of human beings.
But they donât care about those things, so the only conclusion is that they are not pro-life. They just donât want to see family planning and health care go to women, people of color, LGBTQ folks, etc.
It was never about being pro-life.Â
(and incidentally - Bob Jones v US was an 8-1 decision. Who was the dissenting voice? None other than William Rehnquist. Who was elevated to Chief Justice by Reagan when Warren Burger retired a few years later. None of what has happened has happened by accident)
Randall Balmer has a really good article about that here.
And itâs worth noting that Bob Jones University defended their policy exclusively on religious freedom grounds, but Rehnquistâs dissent was based entirely on procedural grounds. Even the one justice who was âon their sideâ didnât buy their argument and had to justify it on other grounds. Itâs been a long road from BJU v. US to the Hobby Lobby case.
