TED LASSO || S04E02
bring my family back together
roy baking those beef tallow biscuits has me CRYING i just know they tasted like ass 😭
Ted Lasso spoilers I LOVE COACH CHILTON
"I bet we've all got a little voice in the back of our heads saying, "Be strong." I just want to remind us all of something real quick."
alice chilton has the patience of a saint if i painstakingly coached a team up the pyramid all the way to the wsl2 and then they replaced me with an unqualified man who’d never coached women’s sport and was mostly famous for not knowing how football works I would start killing
watched ted lasso episode 2 and i have . So Many Thoughts. strap in i’m about to YAP (spoilers ahead!!!!)
pros:
• ALICE CHILTON???? holy shit i feel so maternal over her already that’s pookie!!!! she had every reason to be pissed the hell off actually i will defend her with my life
• roy officially back and he’s Still Roy <3 i missed him so much i feel sick
• “don’t you want to go watch your boyfriend” TEDBEARD ON MAIN HELLO?????
• roykeeley crumbs (the scene in the away locker room was so peak)
• jonathan
• irish players !!!! lesbian players!!!! LESBIAN PLAYERS!!!!
• ted was so cute in this episode im sick
• “not that you know of” royjamie colinjamie can you hear me…..
• THE TAMPONS
• beard’s hair absolutely fried me
• boots being unhinged i love her so much
• sam and jamie references
• honky cat needle drop
• the lockers with the jerseys up made me emotional
• have i mentioned alice chilton yet
so far this was already way better than episode one but . i have some Issues
cons:
• what the fuck did they do to my girl rebecca…….. look how they massacred her she was genuinely so ooc and awful :/
• the way they tried to tackle misogyny in this episode just came off Soooo performative and mainsplainy???? idk it just felt so insincere and the way rebecca was written had me mad as fuck free my girl
• in general….. holy character assassination for almost everyone
• colin gone from richmond with No Explanation whatsoever had me genuinely confused as hell what did they do :((
• i hate baz jeremy and paul
• “have their cycles synced yet” :///
• as much as i adore ted everyone acting like alice was insane for being upset that A Man was offered the job over her made me so upset like guys.
• i cannot stand rebecca’s mother
• it sometimes felt like it was trying so hard to be feminist that it looped right back around to misogyny :/
anyways i’m scared for the rest of this season but this episode was better!!!
royalice bestieism forget everything negative i said about this season
we haven’t even met alice chilton yet and i’m already obsessed with her
i love season 3 jamie because even after being banned from being an asshole he’s still completely dedicated to ragebaiting people and being insanely annoying
What’s that oh nothing just MY GUY HOLDING UP THE FA CUP
meeting the women’s team next week…please be well written and complex female characters please please please please
still on the fence about whether i want to watch the new season of ted lasso, given how much i Did Not Like the s3 ending. In a nutshell, here’s why:
if ted’s s1-s3 arc is the wizard of oz—innocent from kansas travels to a distant land, meets many strange people, fixes a systemic governance issue with the Power of Goodness, then goes home—that makes s4 return to oz and, uh… 😬
seriously, though, one of my big issues with the erstwhile finale is how it failed to say anything meaningful about the concept of “home.” Ted goes “home” at the end meaning back to kansas, but is that home for him? He leaves the community he built, the people whose lives he changed for the better, the place where he grew and changed as a person, to, what? Coach peewee football with a thousand-yard stare that makes the final ten seconds of this feel-good comedy lean uncomfortably into existential horror? Why? Just because it’s back in kansas?
(because that was The Arc and The Plan and one does not deviate, even when what was planned at the beginning no longer makes sense. Probably.)
anyway, that’s not the point. Point is, ted lasso works far better not as dorothy but as mary poppins. Unconventional educator floats in on the wind, pisses off the establishment with kooky methodology, a spot or two of magical realism, and the unshakable refusal to be cowed by conventional beliefs or what others call authority. And then, crucially, when the Job is Done, they fuck off somewhere new to a new job and start again.
all i would have needed to reconcile me to the original arc’s ending is to have ted coaching not peewee but maybe a college soccer team, one that’s losing due to bad management, low morale, etc etc and needs ted’s folksy wisdom and people-first approach to sort them out. That should have been his calling.
which would make this new season not return to oz but mary poppins comes back, the second in the mary poppins book series and a pretty good sequel from what i remember, having read it *cough* number of decades ago. In short, mary poppins returns because the banks family needs her and she goes where she is needed. She doesn’t need to be coaxed back, she just shows up, because she knows where she needs to be and why. Then when her work is done she’s off again. This is the framework that would suit ted best and what the show ought to have leaned into if it wasn’t going to take him through the process of redefining what home means to him, another far more satisfactory way s3 could have ended.
so yeah. Withholding judgement on s4 until i hear more about the vibe of the season and whether it might actually stick a landing this time.
(did i say in a nutshell? lol)
this is EXACTLY the feelings i have about ted going back to kansas and then being so unfulfilled when he’s there (FOR THREE YEARS???)
