No way this is a new thought but Ted’s first ‘introduction’ to Jamie was Nate describing him. Rather than Ted observing him. And Ted saying that he’d met guys like him before.
It’s whatever the opposite of rose-colored glasses are. Because I’m sure Jamie could still have driven Ted out of his mind on his own merit. But we’ll never know because Ted had already set the lens with which to view him into stone.
Having some good conversation in the comments. Including that Ted went in knowing nothing about his players. And kind of stayed knowing nothing.
He didn’t understand what Jamie being on loan meant/entailed. And some of my S1 fics explore how that lack impacted shit way more than Ted ever realized.
Right? Because he’s included Jamie in his “one team one purpose” angle. Without realizing that Jamie was only there on paper. It is extremely plausible that Man City was actually still the one paying his checks (with AFC Richmond paying their money to Man City).
And Jamie was an asshole, don’t get me wrong. But so was Roy, his captain. We only come in mid-season. But Roy makes it clear that Jamie was & is unwelcome. Meaning he was probably kept at arm’s length by a lot of the team for that reason.
If Ted, I don’t know, read his player’s contracts for instance, he might have had a better sense of the situation. To put it in folksy terms—Ted would know the lay of the land. He might have seen that Jamie was viewing his job much differently than Ted was.
He was there to score goals for AFC Richmond. To keep them from hitting bottom of the table and getting regulated. We know that when he plays with Man City he passes the ball. Because his job there is different. And his teammates are more reliable. This isn’t a knock against Sam. Sam was new to the Prem and young.
Roy, as captain, should have taken Sam under his wing but he was phoning it in until Ted lit the fire. As I said, Jamies was an ass. He could have mentored Sam instead of constantly driving him away. And we can see in S2 and then really see in S3 that he is a capable mentor. A great one even. But that wasn’t his job S1.
And it isn’t like Roy has a leg to stand on here. He was a terror to a teammate he didn’t like. And then was a little bit pikachu-face.jpg about other players being pricks to the people they didn’t like. He reapt what he sowt lmao.
Anyway, it is always Jamie Stanning Hours at my apartment.
I agree with all of this, but it also makes me think of the press conference after Jamie was benched, where Ted says something like "[Jamie] knows what we need from him." And it's like, no, actually! He does not! For several reasons, in fact. Not only is he completely immersed in the concept of "Score Goals = Good w/ Coach/Team" but he's on loan from Man City. That's literally what he's here to do. That's it, that's his job.
I had always just looked at that whole deal from the first lens of "well, he's used to only being praised if he scores goals, punished if he doesn't", but there's also the loan piece that makes me so frustrated. Jamie is doing his job, but that still isn't enough, so now he has to contend with being punished regardless of if he does or does not perform up to the standard that's been set. If he scores too many goals, he gets benched (because what Ted wants is seemingly in opposition to his contracted purpose and I really don't think he gets it). Doesn't score enough, and we've already seen what's happened with his dad. He cannot fucking win.
Also, whether people agree that he is autistic or not (and I am in the group that thinks yes) he is very literal minded. He does not read between any lines. Subtly is a concept he has never heard of and he doesn’t want to know her.
So Ted says “Make the extra pass” but not when or why or for what purpose. And I believe there are legit purposes for that. Even if it is only to shock the fuck out of the defenders/goal keep. But without that extra information, it just looks like Ted wants to convert his goals to assists to boost up someone else’s stats at his expense.
And those stats are critical to his pay, his brand-ability, and the decisions Man City will make about him.
And I think this at least has a flavor of Ted’s “It’s not about the wins/losses” to which Beard has already called him out. Because it is at the very least also about those.
I love the Beard Roy dynamic

BEARD JAMIE!!!
hate how so many ppl demonize ted for being a flawed human being like Any other character when there's so much more nuance involved........ like ted is fundamentally a good person but that doesn't mean he's immune to making mistakes ???? he fucks up like everyone else does and it doesn't make him evil or bad
roy kent they could never make me hate you. i love you roy kent
Rewatching Ted Lasso, it might just be me but Trent was definitely developing a crush on Ted after spending the day with him and was like “damn it, I can’t destroy this man’s life.”
i know a lot of jamie being a prick comes from trauma but i also firmly believe that even before his trauma jamie was absolutely feral as a child. he thrived off of being a menace to society. he was that one kid who ran around in public screaming and breaking things
The person I reblogged this from deserves to be happy
I tried to scroll past this. I really did
i don't think we talk enough about how badly jamie was going through it in mom city to the point where we literally see him Faint at the thought of playing in front of his dad......... yeah
Jamie Tartt with all the braincells in this episode
didnt even have to babygirlify him, hes already like that
🙏🚨🚨It has been over a year since the Genocide started. 🇵🇸
We are tense, and anxious, and hungry, and cold. We have been bombed and displaced as we face a genocide. 🇵🇸
Our family is smaller and smaller, many with injuries like my brother who lost his feet and hand. It has taken more than just that life and limb, this war has taken my future, my children's future, and my family's future from us. 🇵🇸🍉
The children cry out in the night from the cold and hunger. We adults hold in our pain as best we can, to try and give them comfort. But we are helpless without funds. Please donate as much as you can. Anything is enough! 🍉🍉
