Hey y'all, its darkblue under a new name and aesthetic!
I haven't been gone per say, I've just been lurking. Not posting much or creating fan fiction.
While I still love Avatar, I have decided to branch out to other fandoms as well. So, having a purely avatar themed profile doesn't work for me anymore. I can't be bothered/ want to create different blogs so this works out best for me.
Plus, a rainbow I find is a good way to represent all fandoms! It being pride month is a happy coincidence haha. Also rainbows are cool af.
Not quite sure when I'll start posting fan fictions, i'm just happy to be creating again.
Authors note: This is my first ever written and published fan fiction. It is not the best but I hope some of you enjoy it! If anyone reads it đ
Description: Jake was very wary of letting you join the battle. It took hours of pleading and reassuring that you will be fine. You trained with Tsuâtey! You are strong and capable. Tsuâtey made sure of that. So when you find yourself in a skirmish with one of Quaritch's crew and come out injured, but victorious. You knew Jake was going to flip when he found out. So you were going to make sure that he didn't.
Na'vi used:

Mawey - calm
Iknimaya - stairway to heaven, the rite of passage for young Na'vi
Uniltaron - dream hunt
Palulukan - thanator
Nantang - viperwolf
Olo'eyktan - clan leader
Eywa has heard Jake, She is fighting back. Palulukan, Nantang and many of Her other children are fighting back. Taking down and destroying Lyle Wainfleet's division. They avoid him, they know that this battle is mine.
His face is contorted in fear, panic rising as his neck breaks to look around only to find his comrades have been eviscerated. A smirk finds itself on my face. Bow drawn, I step out from the brush and into the clearing. My steps are calculated and graceful. Everything that Tsuâtey has drilled into my âskxawngâ head is being utilised for this moment.Â
Wainfleetâs eyes eventually land on me, eyes widening in recognition. His mouth transforms into a sickening smile.Â
âMrs. Sully, nice party trick. But your little forest friends wonât save you or your paramour.â His tone is antagonistic and demeaning. I just want to rip that smug look off of his face.Â
Hissing in response âIâm going to be the last thing you see before I scalp your ugly bald head!â
He snarls, but before he can lift his gun to aim, the arrow that lies waiting in my bow releases. Striking the glass panel of the AMP suit, cracking the glass. The precious oxygen starts to escape from his suit. In a moment of panic, he rushes to put on his mask. His panicked movement causes the glass screen to eject, leaving him vulnerable. Unfortunately, his gun fires, spraying bullets everywhere. I manage to dodge most of them, twisting and turning my lithe body. In spite of this, two bullets graze along my left thigh and right bicep.Â
A sharp sting erupts from where I was hit, warm blood trails down my legs and arms. Adrenaline courses through my veins as I make a mad dash out of the gun's range. I draw back my bow again, breathing in very strong and aiming true. The arrow makes a loud THUNK as it sinks into Wainfleets chest. His breath staggers as the AMP suit falls to its metal knees in a loud clang.
I approach his amp suit carefully. His hands are grasping the arrow, trying to pull it out. The burning pain of my injuries start to increase, but I donât let myself falter. This must be done. His eyes, full of fear, gaze up into mine, full of fury. I unsheathe the dagger carefully from its home on my chest.Â
I lean my head close, my mouth next to his ear. âGoodnight, Wainfleetâ, I spit out. The dagger slices across his throat, rivulets of thick blood pours down his neck. He gargles for a moment then stops. His eyes go cloudy, and his jaw slackens. I jump out of the way when the AMP suit collapses into a heap on the grass. A loud breath escapes me as the pain starts to become unbearable, the adrenaline now wearing off.Â
Fuck! Fuck! FUCK!Â
Jake is going to reem my ass if he finds out Iâve been hurt. He only let me leave the Tree of Souls because I promised I'd be away from the action. Doing recon from afar. Fuck, heâs going to be so mad. I lied and got hurt. I canât let him know.Â
Anger flares in my chest at the thought. I donât know why he canât trust me! I am strong and capable. He looks at me like Iâm fragile, that Iâll just break if anything touches me! I'm sick of it. I am strong in this form. A skilled warrior, I have been taught by Tsuâtey. The Olo'eyktan!Â
âWhirlwind, Whirlwind do you read?â Jake's voice cuts through from my ear piece, causing my ear to twitch.
Shit, speak of the devil. I press my fingers to the comms on my neck. âYes Jake, Iâm hereâ I say breathlessly, trying not to moan from the stinging emanating from my wounds. I turn the comms off momentarily to hiss in pain. I even out my breathing, âIâm hereâ I say, voice strong.
âWhatâs going on?â He replies roughly, concern lacing his voice.Â
âThe forest animals are fighting back, Eywa has heard you my Jake. Most of the RDA ground teams are downâ I reply, my voice giving nothing away.Â
âOkay, fall back. Go to the Tree of Souls. I have to deal with Quaritch's planeâ He responds, none the wiser.Â
âI can help, Iâm on mââÂ
âNo, fall back. Thatâs an orderâ he barks as he cuts me off.Â
âButââÂ
âDonât make me repeat myself!â he yells as he cuts me off, again.
I hiss in anger, âCopy that, Whirlwind over and outâ my voice is laced in venom as I reply.
âBaby, donât be like that pleaseâ He begs, voice coarse. I donât respond, far too angry to deal with him right now. He doesnât try again. Probably annoyed or in the middle of a battle.Â
My attention is drawn to the present when the pain becomes too much to ignore. I look down, blood coats my left leg and right arm. Shit, I need to stop the bleeding before I become too weak.Â
I look around at my surroundings. I find a Yalna tree nearby, I remember Moâat mentioning the bark stops bleeding. Shuffling my way slowly over to the tree, I use my dagger to cut at the bark. Taking only what I need. I use a long thin leaf to keep the bark on my wounds, wrapping it around my thigh and arm. Hoping it will stem the bleeding soon.Â
I call for my Ikran, Tempest, a series of yips and clicks escape my mouth. She descends from the forest canopy and lands next to me. Roaring and growling as she does. âTam tam Tempest, maweyâ I whisper lovingly. âTake me to the skyâ I made tsaheylu and hopped onto the saddle.Â
We lift off, together as one. Our hearts are beating strongly. We both soar through the sky, heading back to the Tree of Souls.
---------------
After the battle was won, the remaining Omatikaya gathered at the Tree of Souls. Songs and dances of victory surround me as I weave my way through the crowd. As well as the wails of families who had lost their own. Itâs hard to feel vindicated, not when so much death surrounds us all.Â
I find bits of coloured fabric, wrapping one around my waist, like a sarong, to cover the wound on my thigh. Doing the same around my shoulder to conceal the injury there. I do my best not to limp, but every time I take a step â it feels like liquid fire emanating from my thigh.Â
I find Jake amongst the crowd, Neytiri next to him. I walk as nonchalantly as I can towards them. His eyes are searching the crowd, looking for something. As soon as they land on me a smile graces his face. Heâs so handsome when he smiles. A small blush rosies my cheeks at the thought. Â
He rushes over to me, wrapping me in his strong arms and squeezing tightly. I canât help the whine of pain that leaves my throat. Shit. He unwraps his arms around me, his hands resting on my shoulders. Eyes scanning me up and down, looking for anything amiss.Â
âWhat was that? Are you hurt?â He voices in concern.
âN-no Iâm not, you just squeezed me too tight.â I started to sweat, I was never good at lying. Jake always manages to see through me. His eyes squint as he looks at me unconvinced. His ears pinned back and tail lashing.Â
âWhy are you wearing this?â his hands fists the fabric around my shoulders.Â
âHey! Let go, I was coldâ I bark back. In fact, the weather was so warm, it was impossible to feel cold. The sheer amount of dancing bodies made sure of that. He carefully takes off the fabric around my shoulder. I donât bother stopping him, unable to maintain the charade.Â
My ears flatten against my head as I look down, too afraid to meet his eyes. âBaby, how did this happen? You were supposed to stay away from the actionâ His eyes are filled with worry, but his tone is hinted with annoyance.Â
I sigh, shoulders raising and deflating at the action. There is no point in lying anymore.Â
âI didnât do recon, I canât just sit back and watch. You should know this! I am more useful involved in the fight than out of it!â My voice started to raise, earning attention from the surrounding people. Including Neytiri. She starts to head over to where Jake and I are.
âI am a strong warrior, I have passed my Iknimaya and Uniltaron. I killed many RDA soldiers, including Wainfleet.â My hands are shaking at this point. Unsure if it's from rage or blood loss. Neytiri places a hand on my shoulder. âMawey, breatheâ. I follow her instructions and take a deep breath in, and exhale out slowly. Jake's brows are furrowed, unsure if he should be angry, sad or proud.Â
âJake, she is right. She has a strong heart and an even stronger will. You must trust herâÂ
I look at him expectantly, waiting for him to say something. His eyes are darting between Neytiri and I, unsure how to proceed. He sighs deeply.Â
âIâm justâŚâ He starts, finding it hard to express how he feels. Jake has always struggled with this. Opening up is rare.
âI am so scared of losing you⌠You mean the world to me. If something were to happen and I wasn't thereââ He stops, voice cracking towards the end. He looks down, ears flattening against his head, and his tail wraps itself around his calf. As if trying to soothe himself.
âMy Jake, I donât die that easily. You have to believe in me, as I believe in you.â I lift his head up by his chin and look into his eyes. I show him a small smile. âOel ngati kameie Jakeâ I whisper softly. I place my forehead against his, wanting to comfort him, and myself.Â
He breathes out slowly, our breaths intertwining. âOel ngati kameie, I love you sweetheartâ. He leans in and places his lips gently on mine. I smile into the kiss and place my good arm on his shoulder.Â
Neytiri steps back, allowing us the space to reconcile. A smile on her face, happy that her students have reunited.  Â
I lean back, and look into his golden eyes. âNow, take me to Moâat.âÂ
âYes Maâamâ he says, winking in response.Â
I roll my eyes, âCâmon big boy, lets go.â
@uzmacchiato
Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed it... As I said, this is my first ever fan fiction that I have written, and also published online. I want to thank @junebugonjupiter again for all their help. As well as @pinkpeonyabyss for responding to my ask with helpful tips for writing.
Description: A relaxing day by the river with the Sully family, trying out what Jake calls a "picnic".
Content Warnings:Â FLUFFY, Reader 's gender isn't described, but they and Tsu'tey have 3 kids, Tsu'tey lives (obviously), Takes place 8-9 years after end of first movie.
Author's note:Â This was soooooo cute, but I will probably be returning to my Jake roots after writing 2 Tsu'tey fics in a row though. Based on this request!
The day off was not Tsuâteyâs idea. Neytiri and her family insisted that your family joined them for a few hours. After some light convincing, Tsuâtey relented, handing his Oloâeyktan duties off to Kaâani for a few hours.Â
Jake had come up with the idea of you all going to the river to swim, and asked if it could be a picnic. The idea was entirely foreign to you all, but Jake explained how on earth, humans would take food and go eat it outside.Â
You had looked at Neytiri in confusion. This idea seemed to be very basic to you, but you had learned that humans found many things entertaining that you did not. She just rolled her eyes at her husband and said, âMaâ Jake, we already do this often on hunting parties and long journeys."
He shook his head and beamed, âBut this is for fun!â he explained.
So the next day, you and Tsuâtey sat by the shore hand in hand, your one year old daughter, Maea strapped to your chest as your two sons ran around with Loâak, Neteyam, and Kiri.Â
âStay where we can see you,â Tsuâtey called to them, and your kids were quick to nod in respect to their father. They ran through the water, splashing themselves and the Sully children. Kiri screeched when her brothers kicked water at her and the boys laughed.
âThey run around like wild syaksyuks,â you laughed and Tsuâtey smiled at the comparison.Â
âBut not half as agile,â he added. Right on time, 6 year old Loâak tripped, sprawling out on the dirt. All four adults held their breath, knowing it was best to gauge his reaction first. If he sprung up like nothing happened, then there was no need to coddle him, but if he started to cry, that was different.Â
Loâak rolled over, staring up at the sky. You saw Neytiri relax out of the corner of your eye thinking he was fine, but then he slowly scrunched his eyes closed as he released a wail.Â
âI got him,â Jake said, hurrying over to his youngest child to comfort him and check for injuries. He held him in his arms, Loak sitting at his hip as he rested his head on Jakeâs shoulder and sniffled.
Your youngest son, Arwey, ran over to sit in Tsuâteyâs lap. âIs Loâak going to be okay, Sempu?â he asked.
âYes, he will be fine, his sempul knows what to do,â Tsuâtey said, wrapping his arms securely around him. You smiled at the sight of your boys.
âLike how you always know what to do?â Arwey asked, looking up at his father with questioning eyes.Â
âAll sempuls know what to do. Eywa gives them this gift when their children are born,â Tsuâtey explained, looking to youwith mirth in his gaze to make sure you were hearing the conversation.
âLike magic powers?â he asked in awe.
âExactly, Son.â Tsuâtey nodded, fighting back a laugh.
Soon, the sun was high in the sky and it was time to eat. Jake and Neytiri laid out a blanket, which you did not see the point of. You would only get it dirty. But everyone sat down anyway.Â
You had packed a bag full of food, just as Jake had explained was traditional. You pulled out fruit and dried yerik, some of your kids favorites, handing it off to Tsuâtey who started portioning it out. As the kids sat down around you, you both started handing out food.
Jake and Neytiri were sitting opposite you and Tsuâtey, with the kids filling in all the spots around the circle you made. You were pleased when Kiri sat between Neytiri and you, casting you a smile as you handed her food.Â
You were fond of the Sully girl, both families were dominated by boys and your daughter was only one year old, so it was nice to have a young girl around. You had watched Kiri grow up, had done her hair, helped Neytiri pick out gifts for her. In many ways, you and Tsuâtey were like an aunt and uncle to them, just like Jake and Neytiri were to your kids.
In fact, you shook your head as your eldest, Tarik sat tentatively beside Jake, looking up to Toruk Makto, being a little in awe of the legend himself despite seeing him nearly everyday.
âHey, Champ,â Jake stuck out a hand to ruffle Tarikâs braids and he beamed.Â
Arwey stayed by Tsuâteyâs side, sitting between his parents. Tsuâtey helped him tear up his Yerik into smaller sections so he did not choke. Neteyam sat beside Tarik and the boys whispered conspiratorially together with occasional giggles.
âYour picnic idea was not as bad as we thought it would be,â you nodded to the former dream walker as you chewed on your food.Â
âYou thought it would be bad?â Jake scoffed, pausing his eating to look between the other adults.
Tsuâtey shrugged, âwe did not know. These Human traditions are often odd,â he said and you nodded in agreement.Â
âWhy did you agree to do it then?â He asked, raising an eyebrow.Â
âWe thought if it was stupid, then we could at least laugh at you,â Neytiri said to her mate whose eyes widened.Â
âAlways the people closest to you,â he muttered, shaking his head.
âI like it!â Neteyam smiled, nodding to his dad encouragingly and your heart melted at his kindness.Â
âWe all do, even grumpy Uncle Tsutey,â you insisted, patting your mate's thigh.
âI did not say that,â he grumbled.
âBut you doâŚâ you taunted and he shrugged.
âFor a human activity, it is⌠adequate,â he nodded.Â
So, all in all, it sounded like your outing was a success.
Rain turns the window into a mosaic of blue, purple, and pink, as droplets reflect the luminescent glow from advertisements and the city outside. The world is cold, and as dark as the city could be â but inside your apartment, warmth surrounds you.
The tiny baby in your arms stirs and you smile down at him. His cheek brushes against your breast, milk dribbling down his chin. "Full?" You mumble softly, lifting him to rest against your shoulder. He whines in response, wriggling against your hands. "I know, I know." You shush him, bouncing him until you hear a soft burp from the small boy. "See? All better." You bring him back to your arms and he settles quickly, eyes fluttering sleepily before sleep stills him.
Keys rattle against the apartment door and you smile as it opens. Jake wheels in carefully, a bag of groceries balancing hazardously on his lap. You move to slide off of the couch but he quickly waves you off. "No, stay. I got it." You frown, whispering something to the baby in your arms, but he overhears and points at you as he sets down the groceries. "Neteyam, tell your mom to relax."
You laugh softly, giving in. Settling back against the cushions, you rock Neteyam softly, humming one of the lullabies you've known since you were a kid. You don't see the way Jake smiles fondly at the sight as he puts away the groceries. "You both fed?" He asks from across the room, pulling a box of formula from the bag.
You nod in response, attention focused on your son. "Okay, rephrasing. Are you fed?" Jake sighs when you don't answer. "Baby."
"I'm fine, he's just fallen asleep so I'll get something soon." Your husband doesn't take that answer, however â he wheels around the kitchen, picking up a plate and starting to make you food. "Jakeâ"
"You have to eat, baby. You need your strength, I won't have you not looking after yourself."
"I'm looking after our son."
"And our son would say the same."
"He's three weeks old..."
"Doesn't matter." You know you won't win, and so you stop trying to. Jake approaches you with a plate of food and you take it. But he scolds you when you place it on the coffee table instead of eating. "I'll feed you if I have to."
"Jake, please."
He just smiles fondly, laughing softly through his nose before he pulls himself next to you on the couch. You shuffle, leaning against his side so that he can see Neteyam, and his hand finds the baby's head instantly, thumb slowly brushing down his thin hair. His eyes find the side of your face, studying it as you stare at the baby in your arms with overwhelming love. "You're doing so good. You know that?"
You sigh, leaning your head against his shoulder and closing your eyes. Raising a baby in this world isn't easy â it never was â but living in a time where industry is prioritised over people, you're glad to have found a man as dedicated as Jake. "I'm so proud of you." His hand finds your hair, smoothing down the shorter pieces near your hairline that pregnancy had brought. He kisses the top of your head, lingering as he holds you close.
"Thank you..." You whisper quietly, relaxing into him further â but Jake shakes his head, resuming the action of brushing down your hair.
"Nothin' to thank me for. Wouldn't wanna be anywhere else." His arm falls to your shoulder, squeezing reassuringly. Neteyam coos quietly, arms flailing as he rubs at his face. "Hey, little man. Realised your dad's here?" You laugh fondly, sitting up slightly to pass your son into his father's arms. "There we go..." Jake shushes Neteyam as he fusses at the movement, and soon enough the baby boy is asleep again.
You relax again into Jake's side, your arms wrapping around his bicep. "You're doing good too."
He lets out a huff, "I have the easy job." His finger runs down Neteyam's round cheek, watching his chest rise and fall.
Silence falls between you. Comfortable, content. The city lives loudly outside, construction almost constant, public transport busier than ever â but in here there is no sound besides the beating of hearts and Neteyam's sleeping breaths.
"They found me again..." Jake breaks the silence, and the words take a moment to register.
"... What?"
"In the baby isle too... bastards..." He whispers the word, but the emotion behind it is still there.
12 months. It had been 12 months since Tommy died, and the RDA are as determined as ever to grab up your husband and take him to another planet. At first, he was afraid for you to leave the house â worse when you were pregnant â it's not that he thought the RDA would do anything bad, but he didn't know the extent they would go to get him to comply. Rumours spread like fire nowadays...
And today, finding him in the baby isle? The things unspoken leave bruises deeper than if they'd have just asked him â they don't care about you, his wife and newborn, his life, his family. They expect him to uproot, leave you stranded on a dying planet to go and live dangerously on another...
He leans forward, picking up a piece of paper next to your plate. You see that it's a letter, an official looking one too. "From Dr. Grace Augustine... And a note from a guy called Norm Spellman. Knew Tommy apparently, worked with him."
You shake your head. Asking people who knew Tommy to get involved? It's disrespectful above anything else. You take the letter from his hand, turning it once, twice, like the contents will shift if you try hard enough.
"Dr. Augustine runs the program Tommy was under. Norm worked directly with him, here, on Earth..." The words hurt, you know they do. Neteyam stirs in his arms like he can feel the way his father's heart tugs, the way your brain tries to cope with the idea of the RDA getting desperate, changing their methods... Jake wasn't allowed to mourn, not to them.
You don't know how to respond. Your eyes skim the letter, feeling like you already know what it will say. You smile fondly, sadly, at Norm's short introduction, the way he described his relationship with Tommy. You'd met Tommy a couple of times, being your husband's twin, and his mannerisms are easy to recall.
Dr. Augustine's letter is harder to digest. Clinically explaining her work and the "Avatar program". The way she described Pandora makes your heart twist â you too had often thought about a life on a planet that isn't doomed, and she describes a world you had only seen in documentaries. Green, alive, clean... A world you yearned for your son to grow up in...
"It sounds good..." You can't help saying. Because of one offer at the end of her letter â bring your wife with you.
"Out of the question." He shakes his head, and you see the way he bites his cheek. Tears well up in his eyes and you turn your whole body to face him.
"What?" The question is quiet. How could he be so sure about not going? Pandora sounds like an incredible opportunity to raise Neteyam, happy and healthy. "Butâ"
"You can't put babies in cryo. I looked it up already." He sighs, blinking away the wetness in his eyes and sighing heavily.
You nod, solemn. Hope quickly draining from your chest. "Oh..."
Silence falls again, but this time charged. He wouldn't leave you. He especially wouldn't leave Neteyam, not this young. It was clear that no money in the world would change that, the RDA frequently reminded you of their pay for the time he would be there. Yet another thing that would give Neteyam a head start, a better life. You couldn't help but feel torn â glad he wouldn't leave, but upset he wasn't thinking about giving his son that life.
You didn't say the words. They got caught in your throat, felt like bile whenever you urged to say them. Leave me here. Do it for Neteyam.
Instead, the conversation passed. The night continued like it always did â but the offer from the RDA fizzled at the back of your mind.
Description: Jake gets protective over what's his when he notices another man looking at you in Awa'atlu.
Content Warnings/tags:Â Possessive Jake, Lo'ak and Neteyam are his little lackeys, Mother!reader, reader in place of Neytiri, Possessive!Jake, Protective!Jake.
Author's note:Â Hehe, this was self indulgent, but also based off of this request! Thank you anon!
Thank you @lumilily for beta reading!
âAnd the anemone, can they be eaten or just used for medicine?â You asked the Metkayina woman in front of you, gesturing to the way she was slicing up different ocean creatures in her hands as if it was second nature.
âThey can be eaten, although I do not recommend it. It can be hard to draw out the toxins and they can taste bitter,â she explained and you nodded along watching in fascination as she broke them open and started harvesting the insides.
You were standing in the communal area where the Metkayina liked to gather for meals and meal preparation. You had been trying your best to gather information and learn from the Metyakina since it looked like you would be here for a while. You had found a woman who looked nice enough and asked if you could help and the next thing you know, youâre sorting medical supplies as they are actively being harvested.
As the woman continued talking, you felt your husband's presence come up behind you. You would recognize the smell of him from across the room, woodsmoke, the clean smell of soil, and deep under that was something distinctly human, like the tang of metal.Â
As soon as his feet landed behind yours, his hands drifted around your waist, flattening as they traveled to the front of your stomach. âJake,â you hissed, grabbing at his hands to swat him away with embarrassment, but he didnât budge. The woman smiled knowingly and averted her eyes, focusing back on the knife in her hands.
âIgnore me, carry on,â he said, subtly grabbing the sides of your loincloth and shifting it to the center. He fixed it with so much smooth ease that you would not have noticed it if you were not the one wearing it.
Your face burned as you realized it must have shifted sometime after coming out of the water. âThank you,â you muttered.
âMmhhm,â he hummed, drawing his hands back and moving them up to your shoulders. âWhat I canât figure out is how you guys open crustaceans, I canât crack into those things.â Jake sighed, moving on from the situation with ease and making your knees weak for him as if it was your first year of marriage all over again.
âBecause you need a mallet, not a knife,â she explained and he nodded.
âHuh, a mallet. That explains it,â he said, leaning over your shoulder to watch her as well.
But his easy, jovial mood shifted as soon as you got back to your marui.Â
He started fuming as soon as you crossed the threshold. âYou should have seen him. If we werenât here seeking Uturu, I would have beat his skull through his mouth,â he grumbled, eyes blazing as he shook his head.Â
You froze, starting to panic at the thought that something had gone wrong. âWhat happened? Are the kids-â you asked but he stopped you.
âTheyâre fine, no. Some punk back there was looking at you,â he bit out, sitting on the low case he used to house his weapons he did not want the kids to touch.
âOh no⌠and my loincloth wasâŚâ you trailed off, eyes widening.Â
His face swiveled to yours in a look of annoyed anger, but his eyes said the blame didnât lie with you. âWas showing more than Iâd like it too,â he shook his head again, jaw clenching. âHe was one of the young warriors. Kids his age think they own the place. Some punk eyeing up my womanâŚâ he muttered again, grabbing his knife on the bench and taking a whetstone to start sharpening it.Â
You didnât mean to, truly you didnât, but a laugh tumbled out of your lips and he heard you before you could suppress it.Â
âOh is this funny?â He asked, brows raising as he paused for your reply.
âNo,â you softened, but your lips still curved up in a smile. âNo, well it is a little funny to see you get so bothered by this. You know that my eye is fixed only on you, Maâyawne,â you said, sitting down beside him and resting your arm on his back as he rested his elbows on his knees. You leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his shoulder, laying your chin on it.Â
âI know that, I just donât like him starinâ at you is all,â he grumbled like a child.
âI am sorry,â you cooed, not knowing what else to say to sooth him.Â
âItâs not your fault, just⌠I'll handle it.â He said, shoulder flexing under your chin as he sharpened his weapon.
You stilled, thinking of all of the times your mate had said he would âhandleâ something. Usually it ended in someone having a black eye or a broken finger. âMaâJake, do not jeopardize the home we have just found here. It is hard enough on the children, we cannot move again. Let it go,â you requested.Â
He just nodded, âI know, I got it,â he assured you, and you hoped you could believe him.
-
âHey mom!â your youngest son called, walking over to you where you sat on the beach as you attached feathered plant fibers to newly made arrows. You figured you would need more in the coming days as the skypeople got bolder.Â
You smiled at your youngest son, âHey baby boy, what are you doing here? I saw your friends heading out to swim,â you asked, not wanting him to miss out.
âEh,â he shrugged, âI thought Iâd hang with you. Mind if I practice my knots? Rotxo showed me some new ones,â he explained and your heart melted.Â
âOf course not. I love spending time with you, Loâak. Sit,â you offered.Â
The two of you sat together for most of the afternoon, laughing and cutting up. With all of the doom and gloom recently, it was good that you still saw your son could still crack jokes with his quick wit.Â
As fun as it was, you and you couldnât help but notice the way he stiffened up every time someone walked past you on the sand. If anyone got too close, you saw that his hands stilled and he would watch them with critical eyes until they moved on.
After the fourth or fifth time you had to know, âWhat is it? Is something wrong?â You asked, knowing your son was more easy going than that.
His head whipped in your direction, âNothing!â he said quickly before looking back to his hands, his eyes now fixed too intently on the rope.
StrangeâŚ
That night at dinner, Jake kept to your side like a bug stuck to nectar. He was touching you the entire time to the point you were ready to smack him just to get some space.Â
âYawne, we talked about this. I need at least a little room to breathe,â you said under your breath as he was crowding your space, sitting so close to your side that you had to scoot over when he sat down so you did not get smushed.Â
âRight, baby,â he said, obviously distracted. Every few moments, he glanced up to a group of young adults, mostly hunters and divers who sat not too far from you. You honestly thought he was just being dramatic about this whole situation at first, but when you were about to lower your eyes back down to your food, you caught him.Â
A young man, maybe mid twenties, looked directly at you and smirked, canines flashing as he cockily got your attention. Your lip immediately curled up in disgust and his face faltered. The sight made you feel a little bit better.
You looked back to your plate, âI see who youâre talking about,â you said lowly. You raised food to your mouth as Jakeâs head turned back to the group, but the man had already started to talk to someone else.
âWhat happened?â Jake demanded, eyes fixed intently on you.
âWhatâs going on?â Kiri asked from your other side. Neteyam glanced over too from where he was sitting beside Jake. His eyebrows were furrowed and you noticed all of your teenagers looked worried. Tuk was happily talking with her friend on the other side of Neteyam.
âNothing,â you insisted, you turned back to Jake, âHe just smiled at me, that's all.â Jake went rigid before he angled his body to be in between yours and the group of hunters, cutting off the manâs line of sight to you. It was painfully obvious that he wasnât conforming to the same circles everyone else was in, but you did not mind. You felt safer with his body blocking yours. He always made you feel safer in his presence.
âUh oh, dad has some competition,â Loâak muttered quietly to Kiri. She snorted but pressed her lips together when Jake sent her a disproving glare.
âI already had to win you once,â he said, perking up at the story. You rolled your eyes as he brought up this again.
âWait, you really fought over mom?â Loâak asked doubtfully.
âHey! I was quite the beauty among the Omatikaya,â you muttered playfully.
âStill are, baby,â Jake smiled goofily and you smiled back at his comment.
âGross,â Kiri grumbled, âdid you at least fight someone for her?â she asked, lips stuck in a grimace, but she still wanted to know more of the juicy details. Even Neteyam and Loâak stopped eating to lean forward and hear better.
âSeveral,â you muttered, looking at Jake who furrowed his eyebrows in thought.Â
âMaybe⌠maybe three men? They started not to mess with me after I became Oloâeyktan,â he shrugged.
âThree!â Neteyam barked out a laugh, and Loâak elbowed Kiri at his side.
âI did not even know it, I thought he was just showing off and being a skxawng (idiot),â you told Kiri conspiratorally.Â
âBut I got you in the end, didn't I?â he said, leaning in to kiss your forehead.
âHmm and haven't let go since,â you agreed.
-
The next day only led to even stranger behavior from your boys as suddenly Neteyam sidled up to you as you walked to the far side of the village to find Ronal.Â
âHey mama,â he chirped as if this was normal for him to miss his lessons to hang out with his parents. You stilled your feet and he did the same, both turning to face the other as you stared critically at him.
âNeteyam⌠what is going on?â You asked, knowing your eldest looked far too nonchalant to be up to any good. He could not lie if his life depended on it, he would be the easiest of the boys to get through to. Something was happening without your knowledge.
âI can not spend time with my mother anymore?â He asked, eyes shifting as he deflected.Â
âYou cannot when you keep secrets from me. Loâak hung out with me yesterday, and now you today. What is happening? The other kids have already left for lessons,â you point out.Â
âNothing is happening!â He insisted, voice pitching too high.Â
âNeteyam,â you said firmly, leveling a look at your eldest child and he cracked like an egg.Â
He sighed, âDad's gonna kill me if I tell you.â
You send him another glare, âworry more about what I will do if you do not tell me,â you threatened.Â
âFine! Fine, me and Loâak are rotating on watch to make sure no one bothers you. Thatâs all,â he confessed.
Your eyes bugged out of your head, âOn watch?â you demanded.
âYeah, you know, keep an eye out,â he trailed off as he saw your annoyance rise.
âAnd whoâs idea was that?â you asked, lips tight.
He hesitated before he said, âUh, Dadâs.âÂ
âHmmm, right,â you sighed at your husband using your sons as his extended eyes. âOkay, then. You can help me with something.â If he was going to follow you all day, you were going to use this to your advantage.
âIs this good?â Neteyam asked, carrying the crates of wooden plates to set them beside the water tight baskets of clean water from the inland.
âThatâs good,â you nodded, setting down your own crate on the floor. All of the plates needed to be washed from the morning meal and you had volunteered since you were still feeling a little guilty about placing the Metkayina all in danger.Â
You handed him a woven rag made of stalk shoots, already having one for yourself and started rinsing the plates off.Â
When your fingers started pruning and a bead of sweat rolled down your chest and another down your forehead, Neteyam turned to you and said, âUh, I have to go use the bathroom.â He threw a thumb to the side gesturing to the outcropping of palms off a ways.
âGo, I got it here,â you said and nodded. He walked away and you turned back to the plate you were washing, wiping the sweat off your face before submerging your hands again.
A group of young adults rambled by and you wouldn't have noticed, except Jakeâs concern had you more wary than normal. They passed without any fuss and you relaxed again.
Footsteps approached and you turned to tell Neteyam that his speed was to be commended but instead you saw the very hunter that had been watching you the past few days.Â
âMrs. Sully, why do they have you here by yourself doing all the work?â he said, almost sounding as if he was deepening his voice on purpose.
You narrowed your eyes, pursing your lips before answering. âI am not by myself, my son will be back. Who are you? You have been watching me.â you asked, flicking the water off of your hands as it dripped onto the itchy, thin dune grass under your feet.
âSo you have noticed me,â he smiled smugly and you winced at how he made it sound, âI am Rakal,â he introduced himself, gesturing to you in the traditional Naâvi greeting. âOel ngati kameie (I see you).â
You shook your head and raised your brow, âNo, my husband noticed you and I would really prefer if you did not," you said, âI am mated and much older than you,â you explained, hoping that would be enough to deter him, but he just shrugged.
âI do not mind, I like older women,â he said, stepping closer and you stepped back in response. Bleh, his words made your skin crawl.Â
You narrowed your eyes again, hand edging closer to the knife at your belt as you said, âI will put it this way, my mate is Toruk Makto. He united the clans and drove the skypeople out, meaning you would be no threat to him. He will use your skull as a soup bowl if you do not leave me alone. I am not interested.â
His eyes widened the tiniest bit, mouth opening like a fish as he decided on words to say. Neteyam walked forwards, steps becoming stronger when he realized who was talking to you.Â
âI believe my mother wants you to go,â his cool and calm voice came from behind the Metkayina and Rakal flinched as if the sound had scared him.
âThen I will⌠go,â he said, awkwardly, nodding to you and then Neteyam, backing up before turning tail and crossing the community space to leave.
âThank you son,â you huffed, deflating as he came to your side.Â
âAre you okay?â he worried, placing a hand on your shoulder.Â
You waved him off, âI am fine, lets just⌠not tell your father about this, yeah?â you asked, turning back to the plates and the water.
âYeah,â he agreed after a moment, âI am starting to like it here. I do not want to have to leave if he gets us kicked out,â he smiled good naturedly, lightening the mood considerably.

Naâvi Words used:
Sempu - Daddy
âDad,â you called out pitifully. The grass underneath your back barely saved you from the cold soil. Your eyes filled with tears as you tried to wiggle your toes, but there was no movement.
âNo, no no.â you sobbed, clasping a hand over your mouth to muffle your cries.Â
Brush rustled and you stilled, looking on with wide eyes as a man emerged from the trees. Surely, it was a Mangkwan raider coming to kill you.
You let out a relieved, but stuttering breath when you realized it was your dad. âSempu,â you cried, as he recognized his daughter lying still and helpless on the ground.
âBabygirl,â he muttered, sliding into his knees beside you and gripping your shoulder. âWhatâs wrong, what is it?â he pleaded, searching your body for any visible injuries.Â
He was about to flip you over to continue the search but froze when you answered, âI got separated from the others and I fell from my ikran. I landed on my back, I think itâs broken, Dad.â Another sob escaped your mouth at the confession.
His eyes closed in a silent acceptance that this was very, very bad. âOkay,â he said quietly, opening his eyes and clenching his jaw. âItâs gonna be okay. Iâm gonna get you outta here. Youâre gonna be okay,â he promised.
You shook your head slightly, âNo, I can't feel my legs, dad! I canât feel my legs,â you cried and he winced at both your pain and the noise you were making.
âI know,â he whispered, voice breaking as his hand came to rest on your cheek. âItâs gonna be okay, Iâm gonna figure it out.âÂ
âI canât feel my legs,â you repeated and he shushed you, hand caressing your face comfortingly as you cried. âItâs cold,â you complained.
âNo, babygirl,â he muttered uselessly, âItâs gonna be okay,â he repeated. He would say it as many times as he had to, as long as you lived, as long as you were okay.
Leaves rustled in the distance as bodies moved through the brush. Low voices rose to meet your ears and you choked on a cry in an effort to quiet yourself.Â
Jake slowly and silently moved over you, crouching with feet planted securely on either side of your paralyzed body as he unsheathed a knife.Â
âIt is all gonna be okay,â he whispered absentmindedly, eyes now on the trees, but he still spoke to you. âGotta stay quiet.â
You evened your weak breath, not wanting to be the reason you were both found out by the colonel. Your vision clouded as you felt consciousness slip in and out. Your body felt so cold, but that was the least of your worries because beyond your waist was simply nothing. Your breath hitched, ribs feeling bruised and broken from your fall as well.
âDadâŚâ you started, stopping when your strength left you.
âShhhhhh, babygirl.â he said quietly, watching the treeline, but the voices had dwindled to nothing. They had turned in the other direction.
Jakeâs gaze finally slid to you. âOkay, hereâs the plan-â he stopped when he saw your eyes were glazed over, your body laying eerily still.
He left his position over you and moved back to your side, sheathing his knife hastily. âBabygirl?â he murmured, picking your body up and moving it into his lap, even as he knew it could make your injury worse.
âNo, wake up. Come on. No,â he said, grappling for a pulse. Your neck was completely limp when he picked up your head, and as he felt around under your ear for a heart beat, there was nothing.
âNo,â he gritted out. âNot like this. Not another one,â he begged someone, anyone, Eywa herself to come now and intervene.
No one responded and he knew he had to move. His other children were still out there alone.
âIâm sorry,â he muttered guiltily, staring horrified at your corpse. He moved your eye lids down over your eyes and slipped you off of his lap, knowing he would have to leave you here alone and cold before he could come back for you.
He stood, âIâm sorry, babygirl,â he repeated, voice breaking as he backed into the forest.

Word count:Â 3.6k
Pairing: Na'vi!Jake Sully/Tsyeyk Suli x fem!curvy!reader
Description: Role reversal! After you pass your dream hunt, celebrations ensue.
Content warnings/tags:Â Possessive/Jealous Tsyeyk, Reader's body is talked about in 1 Convo with Neytiri, Avatar reader, I did my take on the "I don't want Ninat" scene (hehehe), Jake asserts dominance, no smut though y'all know me.
Author's note:Â So I owe several people credit and thanks for this one. First of all, @darkblueonly for suggesting the Ninat scene, @newtkive for allowing me to take inspo from their AWESOME work (link here, go read it!) and a big thank you to @lumilily for beta reading. Love you all! Also some dialogue was taken from the original script of Avatar, so that bit at the end isn't all me, but you may not recognize it.Â
I wrote all of this in like 5 hours... someone tell me how proud they are of me.
You sat with your legs crossed before Tsyeyk as he placed a bowl of white paint between you. Today would be your dream hunt, or as Tsyeyk called it in Naâvi, the Uniltaron. It was your last step to be reborn as one of the people.
âThe Uniltaron is not easy. Even some of the forest born do not survive. Are you sure you want to go through with this?â he asked, eyes searching yours as he dipped his fingers in the paint and started making swirls on your arm.
âYou do not think I can do it?â you asked, slightly hurt that he was doubting you.
Cold paint felt tacky on your skin as it slowly settled. âI know you can do this, but by design it will bring you to deathâs feet,â he explained.
You gritted your teeth, âI have to complete the ritual. Thereâs no going back for me. I want to be one of the people, that's what you have been training me for,â you insisted.
He nodded, eyes set on your stomach as he led his fingers around in more swirls and lines. The sensation tickled, but you did not allow yourself to move. âThen you must be strong, no hesitation. Follow the path Eywa lays out before you and do not falter, Unilnyu (dreamer).â
âDonât worry, I had a good teacher,â you smiled and his yellow eyes flicked up to yours.Â
He was quiet as his hands moved to your face, making twin curves on each of your cheeks, âEven a good teacher cannot prepare their student for this. Keep hold of your strong heart.âÂ
âI will, Tsyeyk,â you promised and he nodded, two fingers moving down your nose and falling to your lips, lingering a moment longer on them than necessary. Your breath hitched before he finally moved on, adding more details to your torso and forehead.Â
âOne last thing,â he murmured, dipping his entire hand in the white and bringing it to your chest. He moved the woven fabric of your top down and you froze at the touch. He brought his hand to you and laid it over your heart. His warmth bled through the coolness of the paint and then into your skin. âSo you remember who you are,â he explained, eyes on yours.
âSomeone with a strong heart?â you asked breathlessly.
He nodded, âand⌠that you are mine.âÂ
-
You splashed water over your face as you sat in the stream, legs still weak from the poison and psychedelics. You laughed as you realized how much joy was in your heart because you had really done it. You passed the dream hunt, you were one of the people now.Â
You scrubbed harshly at your skin, washing the last of the paint off of you as footsteps crunched through the leaves behind you. You turned, expecting to see Tsyeyk but instead found Neytiri.
You smiled at your friend as she stopped at the bank. âCongratulations, sister,â she said proudly.Â
You and Neytiri had become friends over the last month or two. She was wary of your human ways at first as was everyone else, keeping a wide berth and sending you nasty glares. Eventually though, she realized you were in it for the long haul and she made an effort to get to know you. She was one of Tsyeykâs closest friends and it made you overjoyed to be accepted by her, even if it was slow going at first.
âThank you sister,â you beamed at the title.
She sat down beside you as you made your way back up to the shore. âI have brought many adornments. The men get a cumberbund, but women have to show their status in other ways,â she said, opening a pouch that was slung over her shoulder and showing you beaded items, flowers attached to woven fibers, and colorful hair accessories.
âWhich do you want?â she asked, big eyes staring at you expectantly and you felt overwhelmed at the choice.
âYou pick for me. What will make me most beautiful?â you asked, looking to her.
âYou are already beautiful,â she playfully sighed, âI wish I looked like you.â she said and it made your brows jump. She started rifling through the bag, pulling out various items.
âStop teasing me,â you shook your head, plastering on a smile to hide the prickly feeling in your chest at her mockery. She chose a piece and removed it from her bag.
âI am not!â she exclaimed, eyes meeting yours again and she pulled your arm through a carved wooden cuff, letting the swirling, beautiful jewelry sit on your bicep.
âReally?â you asked, eyes narrowing at her as she rolled her eyes.Â
âEveryoneâs eyes are on you. Surely you know the effect you have on the people,â she pointed out.
Your head recoiled at the idea. âI thought that was because I was a dreamwalker. I mean, Tsyeyk said that it was desired among the naâvi, but I thought he was just being nice. Humans can sometimes⌠make fun of people who look like me. They all want to look like you,â you explained.
âWell, that is stupid,â she pointed out. âTsyeyk does not mislead you. In fact, I would say he stares the most,â she grinned mischievously. You blushed thinking of his words earlier, calling you his.Â
That sent your thoughts racing all over again. You wondered if he truly meant it. What would a life together look like when you weren't even living in your real body?
âNow you are teasing me,â you stated. She wound a string of beads three times around your neck, creating a choker that sat at the base of your throat.Â
âYes, but the words are true. He has told me you were the most beautiful woman he has ever seen.â Neytiri confessed, looking at you in a I-told-you-so way that made you even more curious.
âWhich one?â she asked, holding up two hair accessories for you to choose between as if she hadn't just told you earth shattering information.Â
The air left your lungs, but you choked out, âthat one,â and pointed to a yellow stone attached to a carved comb. Â
âDid he really say that?â You asked, as Neytiri stood up to walk around to your back. She gathered your hair and spun it in her hands, your kuru being the only thing left down as she clipped it up securely.
âYes!â she insisted, laughing at your dumbfounded tone. âThat is why you must look extra beautiful tonight, so he will finally sweep you off of your feet,â she explained,Â
âI just passed my Uniltaron, is that not enough excitement for one night!â you argued with a laugh.
âNo, not when you are one of the people now. Not when my friend looks at you as if you are a TĂŹhawnuwll fruit he would like to sink his teeth into,â she chided, grabbing your hands and helping to pull you up so that you were standing.Â
âHe does not!â You exclaimed, regaining your balance as you stood in the ankle deep water.
âHis handprint is gone, this will make him furious. That is good,â she stated, tapping your heart with her finger before she bent back down to her bag and pulled out another piece of jewelry.
âI washed off all of the paint,â you argued, gesturing to your whole body.
âYou washed away his claim on you, he will restake it,â she promised, holding up what you thought was a necklace at first but as you took it in your hands, you realized it was more of a top. A leather strip of dangling beads shaped like a deep v that had another piece of leather that led to an attachment for your waist. It was highly decorated, the leather pressed with swirls and the beads having a hundred different colors and differentiations.
âLet us put him to the test tonight,â she said, brows jumping in challenge. âThis is my gift to you for becoming one of the people. It will fit,â she assured you.
âNeytiri,â you gaped, looking at the intricate and beautiful piece she had given you. âThank you sister,â you smiled, tears welling in your eyes.
âDo not cry, that will make me think you do not like it,â she tutted. She took it back in her hands and gestured for you to take off the top you already had on.
âTsyeyk made it for me,â you confessed, hesitant to part with it.
She rolled her eyes, âI am not asking you to burn it. Just for the night you can wear something different,â she pointed out and you sighed.
âRight, okay,â you acquiesced and slid the top over your head, careful to not mess with your hair. She helped you attach the new top and it fit beautifully. You moved and the beads clacked together, giving a pretty tinkling sound that made you smile.
âThank you,â you repeated, grabbing her three fingered hand and squeezing once in gratitude.Â
âCome, the men will be on the prowl tonight. We must give them something to hunt,â she laughed, tugging you behind her back to hometree.
The drums were already pounding as she pulled you up the spiral to the second floor where fires flamed at full force and dancers twirled with dyed fibers attached to their arms and torsos.
You were immediately swarmed with Naâvi as they congratulated you, some even bringing you in for an enthusiastic embrace. Neytiri waved them off as she pulled you closer to a fire. âDance with me!â she requested and you barked out a laugh.
âI donât know how!â you argued but she rolled her eyes.Â
âI will show you. There is no one way,â she insisted.
âOkay,â you agreed, both of you giggling as she showed you how to spin and move your body the Naâvi way. You know you sucked, but it was fun.
âLook,â she suddenly said, nodding to the corner where Tsyeyk stood, arms crossed over his broad chest as he stared you down. âHe is not the only one,â Neytiri teased.
You glanced to where she was looking to find a group of hunters looking at you as you danced. Your cheeks flushed at the attention, becoming aware of your surroundings.
âDo not stop having fun,â she requested, âthis is your celebration, do not worry what others think.â She could easily pick up on your apprehension now.
You shook your head, âI know, Iâm sorry, I just think I need something to drink,â you excused yourself, stumbling away from the other dancing bodies and into the more open space. You crossed your arms over your stomach, feeling self conscious as you still felt eyes on you.Â
âHaving fun, Unilnyu?â a deep voice asked, and you looked up to narrowly stop right in front of Tsyeykâs chest, your nose an inch away from his chin.
âGeez,â you stuttered, stepping back in surprise. He laughed at your reaction and it made you smile too, âYes, a lot of fun. Neytiri has been very kind to me tonight,â you responded to his question.
âI see that. Is this her doing?â he asked, grasping your hands and pulling your arms away from your stomach so he could see your top and jewelry. You let him hold your arms up like a T, but tugged them away when his eyes flicked back to yours.
âYes,â you admitted, âShe would not let me wear your gift tonight,â you explained.
âYou look beautiful regardless,â his eyes flashed down again as he said, âBut you washed away my reminder,â he pointed out, gesturing to your chest. Only beads danced across it now and you knew he was upset at this by the way his eyes burned into the spot.
âI passed, I didn't think I needed it anymore,â you stated, eyebrows furrowing at his reaction, as you watched his face harden.
âI-â he started, but was cut off as another man approached you.
âDance with me!â a male that you didn't know the name of said in rusty English. He held out a hand, offering to pull you back into the throng of people.Â
You didn't know what to say, but Tsyeyk didn't give you the chance to respond anyway. âTsun nga ke kame po lu plltxe ne oe (Can you not see she is speaking to me)?â he barked at the man who stared back wide eyed. You had picked up much more Naâvi at this point and understood most of what he was saying. Your cheeks flooded with heat at the territorial display.
The manâs eyes darted from Tsyek to you to somewhere over your shoulder as Neytiri suddenly appeared. âShe would love to!â she said in English, taking your hand and placing it in the man's.Â
âShe doesn't know him,â Tsyeyk growled at Neytiri, putting out a hand to stop you from moving.
Neytiri scoffed, âY/n, this is Lopal. There, now she knows him.â She pushed you as Lopal pulled and you were swept into the dance. He looked as confused as did you, but instead of asking questions, he spun you, arms moving strangely and you tried your best to follow.Â
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Neytiri talking to Tsyeyk, his arms crossed over his chest as he kept his eyes trained on you. The Naâvi would not touch metal, but he was glaring iron daggers at where this hunter's hands held yours.
Tsyeyk and Neytiri seemed to be arguing. He gestured his arm at you as he bit out words you couldn't make out. Neytiri didn't let his foul mood intimidate her though, she said her own words and pushed past him. He followed after her, arms still flailing. You rolled your eyes at the dramatics of the two Naâvi, but your mind was quickly distracted as Lopal twirled you.
You danced until your feet throbbed and Lopal finally let you go. You thanked him for the dance, but went to finally get that drink you wanted so desperately.Â
You found water hanging on the wall in a plant-made skin and let the cool water drain down your throat, happy for the relief it brought you. You hadn't realized how dry your mouth was until now. You hung it back up and were about to rejoin the party when a shadow fell across the wall.
You spun around to see Tsyeyk approaching you, stopping a foot away. Your eyes widened when you realized he had a handful of yellow paint.Â
âTsyeyk, what are you-â you stopped as he planted his hand firmly on your chest. You looked down to see yellow sandwiched between blue skin.
Your eyes flashed back to his as he started talking, face hovering near yours. âThe reminder was not for the Uniltaron, it was for you. You are mine, do not dance with anyone else tonight,â he ordered, hand still pressed to your chest as you stared open-mouthed back at him.
He ripped his hand away, the paint making a wet sound as it separated. He took his paint covered thumb and pressed it below your lips, right on your chin. His eyes smouldered as he staked his claim.Â
You searched for words but before you could find any, Tsyeyk sent you one last heated look and removed his finger, leaving a large yellow dot in its absence.
âAgreed?â he asked in a clipped tone, his head cocking slightly to the side as he waited.
You barely nodded before he muttered âgood,â and turned to stalk back into the crowd, leaving you breathless and wide eyed in his wake.Â
You didn't see him again until nearly an hour later. You had spent the time replaying the scene in your mind, his words making you blush anew each time. You were a frazzled mess.
When he finally appeared again, he took your hand in his, not even asking before he swept you into a dance that had your heart racing under his hand print.
âWhere were you?â you asked him when the tempo slowed and he could hear you over the din.
âCooling off, I do not like people seeing me angry,â he explained as if he made any sense. His eyes searched yours, looking afraid of rejection, like he feared he had been to much, but was realizing it too late.
âOhâŚâ you stuttered, watching as his eyes visibly softened. "It's okay," you murmured.
âI am sorry, I justâŚâ he trailed off, shaking his head as you bit your lip in thought.
You smiled bashfully at a memory that resurfaced. âI think I understand,â you said, âIt is like when Peyral gave you that arm guard and I wanted to claw her eyes out. I had to leave,â you confessed and he raised his brows at you.
âI did not know you saw that,â he said, âI did not accept it. My heart already belonged to another,â he said in your ear and you smiled, eyes focused on his smooth shoulder as he held you, hands around your waist.
âGood,â you said smugly.
He held you away from him, searching deeply into your eyes. âCan I show you something?â he requested.
âAnything,â you agreed.
Tsyeyk took your hand and tugged you out of hometree and through the forest. He pulled you around trees and your feet tripped through the grass and brush. You both were laughing when you came into a clearing, your face sobering when you realized where you were.Â
The Tree of Voices⌠Grace was gonna freak out.
Tsyeykâs steps didn't falter or hesitate as he dragged you forward, twisting so that he was walking backwards to see your face. towards the tree, your footsteps illuminating beneath you. Purple hued tendrils of the tree hung down around you and you gaped in fascination. Tsyeyk caught your wonder and smiled at the sight.
âThis is a place for prayers to be heard,â he explained over his shoulder and he let go of your hand. He grabbed his kuru and held it to two vines, letting the thin nerves from his braid stretch over the glowing tendrils. âAnd sometimes they are answered,â he added, turning to look at you over his shoulder.
You reached out and brushed over a tendril feeling the warm, softness of it. âIt's beautiful,â you mumbled, looking to the top of the tree where the brightest concentration of light emanated.Â
Tsyeyk grinned again, âWe call this utraya mokri, the Tree of Voices. Try it,â he instructed, nodding for you to follow his lead. âThey are the voices of our ancestors. When the Naâvi die, their spirits go to live within Eywa.â
You reached forward, grabbing a few vines within your reach and Tsyeyk watched as you attached your kuru, eyes shutting as your mind was filled with the comforting sound of happy voices.Â
âI can hear them,â you smiled, opening your eyes to look at Tsyeyk. He gently tugged his kuru away from the vines, walking over to you. His chest nearly touched your back and you were hyperaware of his scent, his closeness.         Â
âNow that you have passed the rituals, you are Omatikaya now. You may make your bow from the wood of Hometree. And you may choose a mate,â he explained.Â
You glanced over your shoulder, tearing your braid away from the vines as the conversation shifted. His eyes were fixed on the atrokarina softly floating between the vines. You didn't turn around, not wanting to bump him or distract him from his next words.
âLayitxi is the best drummer,â he said, reaching out to catch a woodsprite in his palm and send it flying again.
âI donât want Layitxi,â you said, watching his hand movements. You realized what he was doing. He was feeling you out to see your intentions. You decided you would play his game, and you would have fun with it.Â
âHmm,â his chest made a warm sound close to being pleased and it made you grin.
âThere is Kaim. He is kind, although his aim rarely is true.â Tsyeyk said, fingers curling around a glowing vine in front of you.Â
âKindness is important, but so is skill,â you tutted.
âZĂŹey is the best hunter, although he has many lovers,â Tsyeyk continued.
âHe is a good hunter, perhaps he shall gain another,â you agreed teasingly, knowing you were pushing his buttons but enjoying watching as his hand tightened around the vine.
You shook your head, âI've already chosen,â you gave in, not feeling mean enough to torture him any longer. You turned and continued, taking in his handsome face, âbut this man must also choose me,â you urged hopefully.
Tsyeyk smiled softly, eyes locked on yours, âHe already has.â He reached up to the back of your head and tugged the comb out of your hair, letting it fall freely in a curtain around you.
He went to pull you into a kiss but paused when your mouth was about to hit his. âWaitâŚâ he said and your heart dropped. âI do not want to trick you, you do not know our ways. Naâvi, they⌠we mate for life,â he explained slowly, eyes trained on your lips still.
âOh,â you breathed. âI mean, is that what weâre about to do?â you asked him, genuinely curious.
âThat is what I wish to do,â he corrected you, âbut if you need more time, if you-â you cut him off.
âNo, I don't need more time. I already told you, I chose you, Tsyeyk,â you promised. âbut you know, my real body is far away, sleeping. You would mate with a dream walker?âÂ
His hand left your jaw, covering your heart instead, âThis body is real,â he said, moving his hand again to tap your forehead, âThis spirit is real. I choose you.â
He continued, âWhen I was first your teacher, I hated all Sky People. But you have also taught me something. Spirit is all that matters,â he assured you.
You smiled up at him, âI see you,â you muttered.
He smiled back, lowering his forehead onto yours, âI see you, MaâUnilnyu.â

Steady hands adjust your stance. The target is the farthest itâs ever been, but yet youâve not hit it a single time before. If you canât hit it from 10 feet? Youâre not sure how Tsyeyk expects you to hit it from 30.
âTsyeyk, I canât do this!â
âSince when do you call me that?â He makes a disgruntled face at your words.
âYou mean your name?â You raise a brow as his chest gets closer to yours. A finger comes up to reposition your face, âEyes forward.â
âI thought itâs only appropriate now that Iâm learning Naviâ Well I donât like it. Call me âJakeâ when itâs just the two of us. I like it,â he says it so casually. Like itâs the most obvious thing in the world. Your whole body feels like itâs on fire from his words, and he seems as cool as a fucking cucumberâŚyou could strangle him right now.
âOkay then, Jake, I still canât do this! What makes you think Iâm going to hit the target that far away?â Thereâs an annoyance growing inside of you.
âYes, you can. Your form is always perfect after minor tweakingâ itâs your heart thatâs failing you.â His hand comes to rest on your chest, âItâs strong, but you do not fully trust in it. Stop holding back.â
You swallow the lump in your throat as you take in his words. âStop getting so tense like you know youâre going to fail before you even tryâ But I am going to failâ See! This is exactly what I mean! You have to have faith in yourself. Faith that your arrow will follow the path of where your heart desires.â
He keeps his hand on your chest, âBreathe in.â So you follow his instructions, a slow deep breath in as your eyes focus on the target. âNow relax. Feel the dirt between your toes and how Eywa beats underneath it. Feel the wind as it blows through your hair, becoming one with the breaths you take. And breathe out,â your fingers release the arrow before you realize what youâre doing.
It soars through the air, and for the first time since youâve started these lessonsâ it lands. It isnât perfectly in the middle, but that doesnât matter. You jump up and down as a cheer tears out of you, âI did it, Jake! Holy shit I actually did it!â
Heâs just watching you with a smile, âI told you that you could do it.â
âSo, since Iâve totally mastered this, when will you teach me to shoot from my Ikran?â Youâre only joking, but the genuine look of concern on the manâs face has you hitting his chest. âI was kidding asshole!â
He just lightly shoves you before pulling you back into another shooting position. âJokes are supposed to be funnyâŚnot terrifying.â
âYour face is terrifying,â you stick your tongue out at him. He just rolls his eyes with a shake of his head. You are truly the hardest recruit heâs ever trainedâŚ.but also the cutest.
đ đ đ đ đ
âNeytiri?â Your shy call of her name catches her attention.
She turns to meet you, a soft smile on her lips. âHello, y/n. Howâd your archery lesson go with oeyä tsmukan?â (my brother)
Sheâd been the first to welcome you with open arms after their mother had declared for you to learn the Omatikayaâs ways. And while you originally wouldâve preferred her being your guideâŚyou canât deny the fondness youâve grown for her older brother.
A slight blush creeps up your neck, âIt went well, I actually hit the target today.â
She laughs at that, waving you over to sit with her while she weaves. âYou will need to learn this next, but my brother has the hands of an impatient toddler when it comes to crafting.â
Itâs your turn to laugh now, images of Tsyeyk with flattened ears and tiny huffs of irritation coming from his mouth. âThatâs actually why Iâve come to see you. I-I want to make a bracelet.â
Neytiri side eyes you for a second, a sneaky little grin fighting its way to take over his lips. âMmm,â she hums as her hands work flawlessly. âA bracelet for yourself?â
âNo, uhmâŚa bracelet for your b-brotherâ just as a thank you! You know, for teaching me archery and all the other stuff and yeahâŚâ You trail off after you realize that youâre rambling, cheeks on fire as you avoid eye contact.
She just keeps smiling, eyes racking over you as she takes in your embarrassment. At first her words send a sinking feeling through your gut, âMany beautiful Navi women have tried to steal my brotherâs heart over the years, but none of them have succeeded.â
How stupid are you to think that the Oloâeyktan-in-waiting would feel the same? Heâs learned to tolerate you. Nothing more and nothing less. Thatâs what you think Neytiri is trying to say. That of all the beautiful women in their clanâ why would he pick a dream walker with demon blood? A woman he hated at first and was forced to mentor?
âBut then I brought you back to meet with our clan. And oh Eywa he was so mad I brought you hereâ and even angrier when saânok made him teach you our ways. You challenge him in ways no other woman ever has. Make him confront the parts of himself he buries. As you humans say, you âpush his buttonsâ,â You both laugh at her use of the phrase. (mother)
âHe watches you even when he doesnât have to. Itâs like he canât help but to find you in every crowd. My brother is a lot of things, y/n. He is stubborn and hard headedâŚbut heâs also in love with you.â
You swear your soul leaves your body for a second. There is no way she is really feeding into your delusions right now. This has to be some twisted joke, âNeytiri stop it! That isnât funny,â
One of her hands comes to rest on your shoulder, âIt is not funny because I did not tell a jokeâ Tsyeyk doesnât even like me, let alone love me!â You barely let her get the words out. Your mind is running a mile a minute as she continues.
âOh my Eywa! He looks at you the way Tsuâtey looks at me! Men are not all that different. You can learn to read them easilyâŚanother skill I can teach you,â her eyes find yours still filled with hesitation.
âWhy do you think all of the other warriors have stopped coming to talk to you?â
You donât have an answer for that. Your mouth hangs open as you try and think of a real reason as to why the group of men have stopped following you around like lost puppies during the evening meal.
âWhy do you think he walks over every single night to give his extra niktâchey to you? He doesnât even let me have it when I ask anymore!â
Your brows furrow at that. As much as they tease each other, Tsyeyk would bend over backwards for his little sister. Why would he give you extra food over her?
âAnd do not think you two are being sneaky when you ride your ikrans before sunrise. We all know.â
âThatâs just flying lessons!â You try and reason. Youâve blushed so much at this point you think it might become a permanent tint to your skin.
âThen why do you try to sneak off like teenagers? And why do both always come back with perfectly braided hair? Seems pretty romantic to me,â she shrugs along with her last words. Her hands go to put down the basket sheâs working on.
âNow, what colors were you thinking for this bracelet?â Sheâs smiling at you like she didnât just blow up the foundation of your whole world.
âUhm, I-I brought some rocks I found in the river!â You pull the small sack from your waist and pour them out onto the small wooden table in front of you. Mixes of oranges, blues, and greens liter the surface.
âI wasnât sure how many to get. I just thought these colors would look pretty on him,â the last sentence comes out before you can stop it. âI meanâ together! They look pretty together! You know the color scheme and everything!â
Neytiri canât help but double over in laughter. Youâre dying of embarrassment and sheâs about to die of oxygen deprivation if she doesnât remember to breathe. You truly wish the ground would open up and swallow you whole right about now. But when she finally pulls herself together sheâs quick to apologize.
âIâm sorry! I did not mean to laugh at youâŚI just donât think Iâve ever heard the word pretty used to describe my brother,â she coughs to cover up another giggle that breaks through. âShould we get started?â
âJesus Christ, please.â You murmur as you briefly fan your face.
đ đ đ đ đ
After about two hours of careful crafting, youâve finally finished the piece of jewelry. Itâs not the best, but itâs definitely not the worst. Neytiri seems very proud for it to be your first ever attempt, âThis is better than anything Tsyeykâs made up until recently, and heâs had a ton more time more than you to learn!â
She sees the nervous look on your face as you trace it over in your hands. All you see are the imperfections. How itâs not all crisp and doesnât look like the ones she makes. Her hands come to cover yours, âHe will love it regardless because it comes from you. It could fall apart after 10 seconds and heâd still find a way to wear itâŚjust to have a piece of you with him wherever he goes.â
You give her a genuine smile, moving to place the bracelet back in the sack youâd carried the rocks in. âThank you, Neytiri. I will definitely be back for more lessons! Well, only if youâll have me of course.â
âIs that even a question? I would love to steal Tsyeykâs star pupil! We barely get to see each other anymore since he keeps stealing you away,â she pulls you up to walk with her.
âBut itâs time for the evening meal and you know what that means,â sheâs looking at you mischievously as she leads you towards the communal fire pit. âCanât it wait till after weâve all ate, Tiri?â
âAbsolutely not! I didnât just spend 2 hours teaching you just to wait any longer,â sheâs literally dragging you through the village. If this had been Earth and you were crushing on one of your friends brotherâs? It wouldâve been a cat fight. Here? Neytiri is practically trying to shove you into his arms.
You see the clans people gathered around the fire, family and friends relaxing at the end of a long day. There are children running around playing, still full of energy theyâre trying to get out before bed.
And then thereâs the warriors. A group of the strongest and most skilled protectors of the clan. Thatâs what Jake had called them. He doesnât like the title âfighterâ. They donât fight for the sake of violenceâ they fight to protect their families and honor their home.
His eyes find yours almost immediately. Heâs laughing at something one of his friends said, the orange glow of the fire casting a beautiful haze over him. He looks breathtaking in this low light. Oh yeahâŚyouâre down BAD.
Your eyes donât part the whole walk over. Itâs like youâre in trance, feet somehow still moving. Youâre sure without Neytiri guiding you itâd be a wreckâŚprobably already wouldâve fallen over or walked straight into the flames. She pushes you to the front as you finally make it to his group, her mate sitting on the other side of him.
âI see you must be extra hungry tonight if you are walking all the way over here for my niktâchey,â Jake teases you.
âShe did not come for the food, tsmukan.â Neytiri corrects from behind you. âDid you, y/n?â
You open your mouth but no words come out. This is a lot harder than you thought it would be with all of these eyes on you. The group of big, buff warriors are crowded around like a lunchroom of teenage girls getting gossip. Neytiriâs tail whips the back of your leg to snap you out of it.
âOW!â You turn to her slightly, but sheâs just pointing with her eyes. You follow her gaze and see itâs resting on the sack tied to your loincloth. âOH! Right,â you fumble to untie it as fast as you can.
âI-I, uhm, wanted to thank you for the lessons! Especially this last one, so I asked Neytiri to help me make this for you!â Your hands are shaking slightly as you untie the small bag, hands reaching inside as you pause for a moment. âI know itâs not good, b-but itâs just my first try! So, justâ be nice, okay?â
You pull out the bracelet and place it gently into his palm. He brings it up to closer to his eyes, hands moving slowly over every little detail as he analyzes it. The colors are like no other jewelry he has. Itâs a one of a kind piece that everyone will know came from you. And that is something that lights a fire inside of him. âI love it,â his eyes are quick to find yours again. âCan you put it on me?â
âO-Oh, of course!â Your cheeks heat up once again today as you step in to move closer. Tsyeyk holds his arm up for you, a sense of pride filling his chest as you secure the bracelet into his wrist. In his mind youâve just staked your claim on himâ in front of his whole clan. A clear sign of courting that he gladly accepts. He catches sight of his little sister giggling behind you and his eyes squint.
âHas my sister told you what our mating customs entail?â Jake has a grin on his face as he studies your perplexed expression. âNo?â
The warriors all start to snicker as you look around at them. âWhy is everyone laughing?â
âBecause, paskalinâŚâ Jake pulls you to sit in his lap as you let out a squeal, âyouâve just chosen me to be your mate.â (sweet berry)
Your jaw drops at that, head snapping to jerk between him and his sister, who is wearing an evilly happy grin by the way. âDo not worry,â Jake brings his niktâchey to your lips. You instinctually bite down on it as the realization dawns on you thatâŚheâs. feeding you.
âI accept,â again he says it so casually. Like heâs reading the fucking weather report. âI did not agree to this!â You try and counter, but itâs weakâŚespecially when you snuggle back further into his chest as you open your mouth for another bite of his food.
Neytiri joins Tsuâtey as the evening continues. You share food, stories, and laughter around the group. And as the night winds down and everyoneâs leaving for their own beds, you and Jake remain tangled in each otherâs embrace. Neytiri had to practically come back and drag you to your hammock. So you reluctantly say goodnight, your fingers not leaving each otherâs until they have absolutely have to.
And right before the sun came up the next day, a familiar hand is shaking you from sleep and leading you out of the village. Under the guise of the darkness you sneak through the trees with your soon-to-be mate, playful tugs of the tail and quick kisses exchanged as you race to your ikrans.

Pandora is normally so bright and beautiful at night, but tonight is different. You see nothing but darkness. You hear nothing but your old screams. You feel nothing but his hands. You stare out into nothingness as you wander the forest behind the village all alone. Your arms are wrapped around yourself for protection. Protection from what? You donât know. Perhaps you need protection from yourself since youâre unknowingly drawing blood on your arms from intense scratching.Â
Dirty.
You feel dirty. Youâre dirty. He made you dirty. You need to wash off any traces of him from your skin. Luckily for you, you see a small spring nearby. Youâll be clean there. You need to be clean. You kneel down at the edge of the spring, and you can barely see your reflection in the water.Â
Dirty.
Youâre too dirty to see yourself. With shaking hands, you frantically splash water onto your face. Again. And again. And again. You need to clean yourself. You need to be clean. You splash water all over yourself, on your face, arms, back, legs, and chest. But it isnât enough.Â
Youâre still dirty.
You spot a rock nearby. Jagged edges and all. Itâs perfect. That rock will cleanse you of your impurities. He made you impure, but you can purify yourself.Â
Without hesitation, you bring the rock to your skin. It hurts. But nothing hurts worse than what he did to you. This pain is necessary. The pain will cleanse you. No pain will ever hurt as much as what he did to you. You manically scrub your skin with the rock; you need to exterminate any traces of his touch from your body. But no matter how much you scrub your skin bloody and raw, you still feel his grotesque touch seared deep into your skin; into your bones.
In frustration, you throw the rock so far into the forest that you donât hear it drop. You look back at your reflection. That water is tainted with your dirty blood. Youâre still a revolting, disgusting, dirty mess. Hot tears escape your swollen eyes, and you cry out into the forest like a baby. You bring your knees up to your chest when you let yourself fall onto the ground.Â
You should be over this. Itâs been over sixteen years. Youâre not the same scared eighteen-year-old girl you once were. So why are you crying like a baby? Youâre pathetic. You should really be over it. But youâre dirty. How can you forget the dirt charred into your skin? Even when tainted by your dirty blood, the water remains pure. The water is inviting. The water will cleanse you.
The way of water has no beginning and no end. The sea is around you and in you. The sea is your home before your birth and after your death.
Our hearts beat in the womb of the world. Our breath burns in the shadows of the deep. The sea gives, and the sea takes.
Water connects all things.
Life to death.
Darkness to light.
You repeat the saying as a mantra in your head as the water consumes you. You must be submerged in the water to be clean. The water is peaceful. You feel no pain as you let it surround you.  You are at peace in the cleansing spirit of the water. You feel nothing. That is good. Nothing is better than the agony youâve been in. You smile softly as you relax into the water, as you let the darkness overtake you.
Suddenly, you feel yourself being jerked out from underneath the water. Your vision is hazy, and you can barely make out the form of Ronal. âChild! What are you doing!â You can barely make out the words she says. Youâre too weak to speak. You just cough up the water you inhaled as you let the darkness overtake you once more.
âââ ââ ââ â âââ
Worry doesnât even begin to describe the emotions Neytiri is feeling. She can slowly feel her family fracturing. It started when the Sky People returned, and the cracks have only grown larger over time.
Now she sits in the healing marui with a tear-stained face as she holds onto your limp hand. Youâre weak; not just physically, but mentally and spiritually as well. Sheâll never forget the utter terror she felt when she heard the news that you were unconscious in the healing hut.Â
In just over two weeks, sheâs almost lost you twice. The thought is unbearable. Ronal was the one who found you. Neytiri thanks Eywa for having someone near you. She had so many questions for Ronal, but the TsahĂŹk would only say that your illness was caused by demons inside you.
Neytiri had a better chance of getting answers from a rock than Jake. He was the last one who spoke to you, and he refused to tell her what your argument was about. Heâs completely shut down. Even now, heâs dragged his sons to loot the sunken demon ship instead of being by your side.
As she looks down at your fragile, bandaged body, she cannot help but feel guilt. Guilt that she has no clue about what could have prompted you to do such a drastic thing. Sheâs your mate for Eywaâs sake! She should know! Tuk has been asking so many questions, but Neytiri has no idea how to respond. How do you explain to a child that her mother is in so much pain that she harmed herself? Kiri has been acting strange ever since she found Loâak. Neytiri knows that sheâs hiding something.
Itâs all too much for Neytiri. She wants her family to be happy like they were before the Sky People returned. But that seems impossible right now. All she can do is pray to the Great Mother.
âMama, Dad is back,â Tuk says in a soft voice as she and Spider walk into the marui; it was her subtle way of asking Neytiri to come with her. She seems to be in better spirits today. As much as she doesnât like humans, Neytiri has to thank Spider for keeping her daughter distracted.Â
As much as sheâd rather stay beside you, she knows that she also needs to be there for her children. Neytiri presses one loving kiss onto your forehead before walking out to where a large crowd of Naâvi is gathered. Thankfully, the healing marui isnât too far away.
Tuk and Spider rush over to the little boat where Jake, Loâak, and Neteyam were, while Neytiri stays back. Neytiri stays back, away from the metal. Metal poisons the heart. She reluctantly accepts that Jake uses it, and sheâs conflicted when her children do, but she has sworn off metal. It is against Eywaâs laws. Neytiri has faith that Eywa will provide. Jake presents a gun to Tonowari.
âThis is not the Naâvi way, Jakesully.â
âWeapons of metal are forbidden.â Ronal chimes in. Neytiri walks to get closer to Tuk. âYou know this. To touch them poisons the heart. Eywa will provide.âÂ
Neytiri has tried to get that point across to Jake for years, but he is stubborn. A saying you taught her was âin one ear, out the otherâ, which perfectly describes Jake anytime sheâs tried to get him to shun metal weapons.
âYou should be with your family, not gathering these things!â Ronal tries to reason with him. âYour woman is lying unconscious in the healing marui; she needs you!
âThis is our home. I said Iâd fight, but I cannot fight gunships with spears.âÂ
âWe sank the demon ship. The pink skins fear us now.â Tonowari says, but Jake just ignores him.
âYeah? We got lucky. And they got more ships, but we have these.â Jake presents a grenade launcher to the Metkayina leaders, who are unimpressed.Â
âWe are grateful you stand with us, Jakesully, but it is not guns we need; it is the rider of last shadow. Ride Great Toruk as you did before.â Tonowariâs statement seems to have triggered something in Jake. His brows furrow, and he becomes serious.
âWhen you ride the beast, you become the beast.â His voice is low and gravely. âAnd the more blood the better. I will not become Toruk Makto again.â
Tonowari shakes his head at Jake. âJakesully, you are always Toruk Makto.â
After all of the metal weapons are off the boat, Neytiri returns to the healing marui. Jake joins her a little while later with something in his hand. He approaches Neytiri slowly and hands her what appears to be a modified arrow.
âI know you will never give up your bow.â He smiles a little when Neytiri seems to accept his gift. âJust donât be close when it hits.â A painful grimace forms on Neytiriâs face when she lets herself touch the metal tip of the arrow. She can feel its poison seeping into her skin, and she promptly tosses it onto the ground. Jake purses his lips into a tight line as Neytiri breathes hard and turns her attention back to you.
âSo you agree with Ronal?â He asks as he picks up the arrow from the ground.
âI will never speak against my husband in front of that woman.â
Jake starts to tighten the strings on the arrow before he speaks. âLook, Iâm a marine. Iâm not going to take a knife to a gunfight or a prayer.â His words seem targeted towards Neytiri. âSo what am I supposed to do? I canât run. I canât fight. Oh, thatâs right, Eywa will provide.â Heâs getting more and more tense as he speaks. âSo where was Eywa? Where was Eywa when our wifeââ
âJake!â Neytiri turns around as she screams at Jake. âIâm in this place where I have nothing. Not my people. Not my forest. Even my fatherâs bow is gone. All I have is my faith that this is the Great Motherâs plan.â Her voice cracks the longer she speaks.
âYou have this family,â Neytiri says nothing. She just turns her back on Jake to look at you. Tears are starting to flow from her eyes. Does she even have this family? Jake comes up behind Neytiri and hugs her. âAnd you have me. And I love you so much.â Neytiri softens up a little and leans into Jakeâs touch. âWeâll get through this, baby.â Neytiri wants to believe, but sheâs struggling.Â
The two stay inside the healing marui in silence for a while. They just watch you. They hold onto your hands. Jake feels guilty. If he had gone after you that night, if he were a better husband, then you wouldnât be like this right now. He should have listened to his gut rather than stubbornly refusing. Because of him, his dear wife is hurting. Because of him. You were right; it is his fault.
Neytiri stares at your hand that is peacefully resting in her hand. Even if your hands are different from hers, Neytiri has always loved your hands. She misses the way your hands would hold onto hers. The way youâd caress her face. The way youâd braid her hair for you. Sheâd do anything to feel your hands move again. She gets her wish when she feels your fingers twitch ever so slightly. Neytiri is immediately on alert, scanning your face for any signs of waking. She can see your eyelids twitch, and she taps on Jake to get his attention.
When you finally open your eyes, you canât help but squint at how bright everything is, even though itâs now sunset. Your body is aching, and it hurts to move. The first thing you see when your eyes adjust to the light is the look of relief on your mate's face.Â
âMaSyulang, youâre awake!â Neytiriâs tears drop down onto your face. She carefully holds your hand up to her face as she hovers over you. âI was so worried about you.â Jake pops up off the ground and heads to the entrance of the marui, saying that he needs to find Ronal.Â
âMaTiri, what happened?â Your head is pounding. You have no idea why youâre in the healing marui or why your body is covered in bandages. As soon as you ask the question, a flicker of worry briefly covers Neytiriâs face before she gives you a pained smile.
âThe tsahĂŹk says there are demons inside you that have made you sick.â Neytiri tries to choose her words carefully, not wanting to say anything that would upset you further. It just leaves you confused. Before you can question anything, Jake comes in with Ronal, who promptly kneels down to check you.Â
âHow are you, child?â Ronal asks as she removes one of the bandages on your arm that you bled through. Your ears fall flat, and you have no idea how you are. âEywa has sought to keep you alive. How could you try to drown yourself? You claim to be a mother, yet you were willing to leave your children.â Oh. You remember now. A particularly rough tug on the bandages causes you to yelp out in pain. âStupid woman.â
Neytiri glares at the woman scolding you. âCareful tsahĂŹk or I may forget that you are with child.â Ronal takes a step back and hisses while instinctively protecting her belly; Neytiri hisses right back at her.Â
âYour wounds are not too deep, but you will still need to rest. Do not be like your wife who refuses to listen to the tsahĂŹk.â Ronal sternly states, gesturing to Neytiriâs still bandaged body. âWhatever ails you, pray to the Great Mother for guidance and talk to your mates. Do not do what you did again.â That is all Ronal says before leaving you and your mates in the marui alone. It is awkward; no one knows what to say.
âDid you find Loâak?â You manage to croak out.Â
âKiri found himâŚthat night,â Neytiri says softly, her eyes avoiding your own. That is good. At least Loâak is okay. Thereâs some more awkward silence between you three. Whatâs left unspoken is hanging thick in the air. But you arenât brave enough to bring it up first.
âBaby, please talk to us.â Jake practically pleads. He leans forward to grab your hand, and you let him, but you avoid looking at him. You donât want to talk about it. Youâve never talked about it. You canât talk about it.Â
âMaSyulang, let us help you,â Neytiri begs. When she sees tears escaping your eyes, she gently wipes them away. âWe want to help you, but we canât if we donât know whatâs wrong.â You bite your lip. Youâre torn. This is your burden to carry; you donât want to put it onto your mates. You feel like such a hypocrite because if either Jake or Neytiri were in your shoes, youâd be urging them to talk, to share the burden with you.
âThe other night, you mentioned a man. A man you saw again, a man who needs to die.â Jake tries to get you to look at him, but you refuse to. âWho was that man? What did he do? Please tell us.â
âIt was Wainfleet.â

Alone. Thatâs the best way to describe you. Over twenty billion people on this god-forsaken planet; you canât even walk down the street without feeling claustrophobic. All these people, and yet youâre utterly alone. All you have are your books and your will to do better for yourself.
You have no family. The orphanage you grew up in didnât know if your parents died or if they just didnât want you. It doesnât matter, though, the result is the same. Youâre alone. You had no friends or family. Itâd be easy to give up. But you knew you could do something with yourself.
Pandora would be that something. The moment you learned about another planet and the Naâvi, you knew what you wanted to do with your life. Since you were a young child, you spent every waking moment you could studying. You had to become as smart as you could. The RDA was selective when it came to choosing people for the Avatar program; you couldnât just meet the bare minimum, you had to excel.
Even when the orphanage kicked you out at fifteen to fend for yourself, you never gave up. You read while you work. You were lucky that the old man who ran the diner you worked at let you live there for only half your paycheck. You starved, and you cried, but you never gave up. All of your hard work paid off when the RDA accepted you as a potential candidate for the Avatar program by the time you were seventeen. You speed-ran through all the required training and then some. You were the only woman in your class, and it seemed like everyone was out to get you. No one believed that a young woman could actually qualify for the program unless she slept her way to the top.Â
You proved them wrong when Grace Augustine herself handpicked you to be an assistant teacher at her school. Not only were you the perfect age, but you had the smarts and drive to survive.Â
On the day you received your acceptance letter, you cried tears of joy. They were the first tears you cried that were positive. You finally did it. No longer would you have to sleep on a dingy diner booth. You wouldnât have to starve yourself to afford basic necessities anymore. You felt free. Pandora would be your salvation. Leaving Earth was the easiest decision of your life. There was nothing for you on Earth. Pandora was full of possibilities, and you werenât going to squander it.
The moment you wake up, itâs like youâre recovering from the world's worst headache. You didnât dream at all in cryo; you couldnât. Your headache isnât any better when your pod opens, and you're exposed to an overly bright white room.Â
âYouâve been in cryo for five years, nine months, and twenty-two days.â One of the medical examiners shouts. âYou will be hungry. You will be tired.â Tired. Being tired after spending nearly six years asleep sounds like an oxymoron. But it was true. Itâs not like cryo gave you the best sleep of your life. Itâs not supposed to. Itâs significantly cheaper to keep only a few staff awake and the rest in cryo than to keep everyone awake.
As you adjust to being awake, you canât fully wrap your head around being six years into the future. You have no one on Earth who would miss you or care that you were gone. You look around at all of the people whoâve also woken up, and you canât help but think about all of the people they left behind to go to Pandora. Surely most of these people have friends and family back on Earth. The entire trip, plus their contract time, would mean theyâd miss nearly twenty years of their loved ones' lives. It couldnât have been an easy decision for them.
The first time your eyes land on Pandora, youâre awestruck. Itâs covered in vast blue oceans and green forests. Youâve never seen anything like that. You know that Earth used to look like Pandora. But that was long before your birth. The only times youâve seen a blue and green Earth were either from old textbooks or edited images. Pandora was truly a fresh start.
When it was time to get into a shuttle, you discovered that you were the only person joining the Sci-Ops; a few were Sec-Ops, but most were miners. It was awkward having nothing to discuss with the other. But youâre used to it, youâre used to being alone. When you landed, there was a mandatory safety brief led by a colonel with a viperwolf scar on his head. You zoned out most of it since youâre more than aware of the dangers of Pandora. You couldnât wait until the end of the briefing, so you could go to the Sci-Ops area. No one pays you any mind as you make your way to the Sci-Ops area, or at least thatâs what you think. Little did you know you caught someone's eye.
When you finally reach the Sci-Ops area, your heart is pounding with anticipation. Youâve been training for this for years. Unlike most people, you signed a long-term contract; you will be here for twenty years, with the possibility to extend it, youâll definitely extend it. Seeing the place youâll spend twenty years in is remarkable.Â
Even though youâve never been here before, you already know where everything is. The RDA built an exact replica of the main room so you could simulate emergency drills. There is one area youâre dying to go to. The area where your Avatar is being unloaded.
Sheâs beautiful. She looks like you. But also not. Sheâs big and blue, itâs like sheâs her own person, even though you know sheâs nothing more than a husk without you in it. But something tells you she has a soul within her.
âSheâs beautiful, isn't she?â You turn around to see a tall, older ginger woman in a white lab coat approach you. You immediately know who she is. âDr. Grace Augustine?â You didnât mean to say it out loud with your mouth gaping open like a fish out of water. You knew that youâd be working with her, but to see the woman who inspired you to come to Pandora in the flesh is mind-boggling. Grace seems to take your awkwardness well and laughs a little.Â
âYou must be y/n l/n.â Her smile widens, and she clasps her hands behind her back. âYou have a remarkably impressive resume despite your age. Howâs your Naâvi?âÂ
You fiddle with your fingers and avoid her gaze. You canât believe that the first person youâre having an actual conversation with is Dr. Grace Augustine. âI-Iâve studied for years, but I need to work on my conversational skills. Iâve only studied Naâvi by myself.âÂ
âYou speak well, donât second-guess yourself.â Her smile is warm. You donât remember the last time you received a genuine smile. âIf youâd like more practice, then we can speak Naâvi to each other.â Your eyes light up at her offer. âThank you, Dr. Augustine.â She shakes her head a little. âYou can call me Grace.â
Grace spent the entire day with you. You found out that she usually spends most of her day in her Avatar body, but since you were coming, she wanted to get to know you. She showed you around Hellâs Gate and the Avatar compound. You knew the Naâvi were tall, but actually seeing how tall they are compared to you is jarring. Towards the end of the night, she went over all of the students at her school. Itâs just you two in the bio-lab; everyone else has gone to bed.
âSo Tsuâtey is going to be oloâeyktan, and Sylwanin is the future tsahĂŹk and the oldest daughter of the current oloâeyktan and tsahĂŹk. Those two will become a mated pair.â You point to a photo of a Naâvi girl; sheâs remarkably pretty. âAnd this is Neytiri, sheâs Sylwaninâs younger sister.â
âYou learn fast, though I shouldnât be surprised since youâre a prodigy.â Youâre not used to hearing people compliment you. âThatâs enough work talk for today. I want to talk more about you.â If you were in your Avatar body, youâre sure your ears wouldâve gone down, and your already big eyes wouldâve gotten bigger. âWhat do you want to know?â You ask shyly.
âWhat makes a young girl travel twenty-six trillion miles away from home to work on a dangerous moon before sheâs even eighteen?â Thereâs that famous Dr. Augustine straightforwardness that youâve heard so much about. âWhatâd your parents think?â
âI donât have parents.â You decide to be honest. Youâre going to be working with her for years, and itâs not like youâre ashamed of your past, so why hide it? âThereâs nothing for me back on Earth. Iâm sure the only person who knows Iâm gone is the man whose diner I slept at. I knew I had to do something with my life, and Pandora was my answer.â
Grace looks a little shocked. She expected you to come from a well-off family that had the resources to be able to help you succeed in the Avatar program at such a young age. She didnât think that you were barely scraping by and doing everything by yourself.  âYouâre here now, and Iâm sure youâll do something great during your time here. I know it.â
You two continue to speak for some time before Grace tells you to go to your sleeping quarters since youâll need all the energy you can when you link up with your Avatar for the first time in the morning. Youâre a little nervous about finally linking up with your Avatar. Youâve heard from another scientist, called Max Patel, that all of your Avatarâs vitals look great, but the last test is for you to link up. So many things could go wrong in the first link, and you hope nothing goes wrong. All your efforts could be wasted if the link fails. Youâre so engrossed in your thoughts as you walk that you donât notice a man purposely walking in front of you until you bump into him.
âOh my god! Iâm so sorry!â You stammer out a quick apology and bend down to pick up the stacks of paper he was carrying. The man was bald, and his outfit made it clear he was definitely part of the Sec-Ops team. âYou should really watch where youâre going. Not all the guys here would take nicely to someone bumping into them.â The man warns. âIâm sorry, sir.â You apologize once more before handing him your documents and running off into your room.
When you wake up, your nerves are getting to you. You have to keep your hands inside your lab coat to keep your shaking under control.
âHow much link time have you logged?â Grace asks you as she leads you to your link. âA little over 550 hours.â Grace looks at you, shocked but also impressed. âThatâs good.â She replies as she starts up the link. You lie down and try to relax; itâs said that being calm and relaxed leads to better results. âRelax, y/n. Everything will be fine. Once all of your preliminary exams are finished, you can meet me in the compound.âÂ
Grace offers you a few more words of encouragement before the link lowers. When youâre surrounded by the familiar darkness, you do your best to clear your mind and let the link take you.
When you wake up, the world is oddly bright and fuzzy as your eyes try to adjust to being used for the first time. Two doctors are hovering over you, wearing masks as they call your name. âY/N, can you hear me?â One doctor asks, while the other shines a light in your eye and snaps his fingers near your ears. Itâs weird seeing a human face look so small.Â
The tests take over an hour to complete; theyâre tedious but necessary. Your Avatar body represents a significant investment for both yourself and the RDA. Your body is about a billion-dollar investment for the company, and for you, itâs your lifeline on Pandora.
Over the next month, you learn how to get used to your body. Because you were so young, Max wanted you to wait a while before leaving the compound. The first time youâre allowed to leave the compound is the day you get to meet the students.
âIâm Trudy, I fly the science sorties.â A short, well, short to you, since youâre in your Avatar, speaks to you. âThis is Wainfleet. Heâs the gunman in case something comes after us.â Your ears spring up when you realize who the man is. âItâs you.â You didnât mean to say it out loud.
âUh⌠do I know you?â He feigns ignorance. Little did you know that he knew exactly who you were. He even used his connections to get him to be the gunman for today just so he could see you. You quickly get embarrassed, your emotions clearly plastered on your face. âSorry Iâ I was the one who bumped into you last night.â You say meekly. Wainfleet doesnât say anything; he just eyes you up and clicks his tongue. âAlright, people, hurry up. We canât be late.â Grace urges everyone into the Scorpion.
Coincidentally, Wainfleet was at the door right next to where you were sitting. Although you were engrossed in your notes, you couldnât help but feel a pair of sleepy eyes in your body. You even thought you felt something touch the tip of your tail. You decide to chalk it up to paranoia and jitters about meeting the Naâvi for the first time.
Your introduction to the students didnât go as planned. You wanted to surprise them with some fruits you thought theyâd enjoy; instead, you ended up falling from a tree flat on your butt right in front of them. Despite that little blunder, you quickly grew close with Tsuâtey, Neytiri, and Sylwanin. It seems like Graceâs idea was a success; your close age helped you bond with the students. In no time, a month has passed since you met them.
One day, Grace sent you out of the classroom to get some fruit before the other students came. You thought nothing of it and quickly went to forage for some fruit and berries. Tsuâteyâs climbing lessons seem to have paid off since you can climb trees with minimal difficulty now. Youâre confused when you finally return to the classroom to see that itâs empty. Grace should be here, and surely the students would have made it by now.
âSurprise!âÂ
The shouts of multiple Naâvi shouting at you take you by surprise. And then you see a banner that makes you tear up. âHappy Birthday, y/n!â The students yell before rushing to hug you. You try to hold in your tears, but Neytiri notices how watery your eyes are.
âTsmuke, are you okay?â She asks genuinely. You sniffle a little before blinking back your tears. âI-Iâm fine. Itâs just thatâIâve never had anyone tell me happy birthday.â The trio looks at you in utter shock.Â
âBut I thought it was an Earth custom to celebrate one's birthday with loved ones,â Sylwanin states. âIt is. I just never had loved ones.â Tsuâteyâs signature scowl somehow deepens at your statement. You donât want to bring the mood down with your past, so you quickly change the subject. âHow did you find out that today was my birthday?â
âWe asked Saânok. She told us and helped us plan a sruprise party.â Neytiri says with a beaming smile. âIâve never had anyone throw me a surprise party.â You confess while also gently correcting Neytiriâs pronunciation.
You see Sylwanin nudge Tsuâtey, and he leaves the classroom for a second only to return with a woven basket in hand. âWhat is this Tsuâtey?â Instead of answering immediately, he lifts the lid to the basket, revealing a fruit dessert. âSaânok told us about birthday cakes, so we made our own Omatikaya version for you.â With that, all the students begin singing Happy Birthday. The tears that you were holding back are finally released. Theyâre tears of joy. No one has ever cared about you enough to do something as simple as wish you a happy birthday. The rest of the day, you spend with the students. By the end of the night, youâre on cloud nine as you make your way back to your quarters, but youâre startled to see Wainfleet standing by your door holding something in his hand.
âMr. Wainfleet, what are you doing here?â You ask tentatively. Wainfleet smirks at you. âI thought we were past the formalities, I told you, you can call me Lyle.â He leans close to you. âSo try again, sweetheart.â His intense eye contact makes you uncomfortable, so you try to avoid it.
âW-what are you doing here, Lyle?â
âA little birdie told me that todayâs your birthday.â He presents a bottle of alcohol and some glasses to you. âSo I brought you a gift.â
You had no idea what to say. You always had a negative impression of Lyle. You feel a little bad for thinking so negatively about him. He was never rude to you, he never did anything to you, and now heâs brought you a birthday gift.
âY-you shouldnât have.â You try to politely reject that gift. You miss it, but a hint of annoyance flashes across Wainfleetâs eyes for a second. âDonât be modest. I got it for you.â He tries to shove the bottle in your hand, but you donât take it. âReally, I canât. I shouldnât drink.â
Lyle gives you a disappointed look. âItâs my bad. I shouldnât have spent my yearly special rations on this. I shouldâve known you wouldnât like it.âGuilt starts to eat you from the inside. You can only imagine how much trouble Wainfleet must have gone through to get you something as luxurious as alcohol. That stuff was practically reserved for the executives and other high-ranking officials. Itâd take you at least five years to have enough special rations to get you the most basic bottle of alcohol, and yet Wainfleet chose to spend his on you. Maybe accepting it couldnât hurt.
âWell, maybe one glass couldnât hurt.â Wainfleetâs eyes light up when you acquiesce. âWould you like a glass?â You offer out of politeness; he did get it for you after all. You didnât want him in your tiny bedroom, but there was no other place you could have a drink, so youâll have to suck it up.
One drink turned into two, and two turned into six. Your body felt light and floaty. Your head was spinning, and you felt like you were going in and out of consciousness. You felt a callous hand creep dangerously close to the hemline of your pants. You try to move, you try to scream, but you canât. Wainfleetâs face inches closer to yours; his breath reeks of alcohol. âI have another present for you, buttercup.â He takes your hand and guides it to his bulge. âBe a good girl for me.â Those are the last words you hear before the world fades to black.
When you wake up, you donât remember what happened in the night. All that you know is that your body aches all over, especially between your legs. And thatâs when you notice a naked figure sitting on the edge of your bed. Wainfleet was just watching you sleep. âMorning, Sleeping Beauty.âYou want to scream when you notice him and the fact that youâre also undressed, but he roughly clamps his hand over your mouth, preventing you from doing so. âI wouldnât do that if I were you.â He warns.
Since you canât scream, hot tears stream down your face. You barely remember what happened the previous night, but it doesnât take a rocket scientist to figure out what happened. Why is all you can ask yourself? Why did he do that to you? Why you?Â
âYou were so good for me last night. Youâll stay good for me, wonât you?â You have no choice but to hesitantly nod to him. âGood.â He lets go of your mouth, and you rush to cover yourself with your thin blanket. âW-why?â It's all you barely manage to spit out. You hate how weak you sounded.
âWhy?â He scoffs mockingly. âSince you got here, you paraded yourself around like a slut, so I fucked you like one since youâre legal now.â Paraded yourself? You have no idea what heâs talking about, but something tells you that you shouldnât question him. âYou bled so much. Was that your first time?â You nod meekly. âShit, I can hardly believe a slut like you waited so long to get her cherry popped.â He sits up and begins to put on his underwear. âYouâre lucky it was me and not some limp dick prick.â You can hardly call yourself lucky in this situation. What do you even do about this? Who can you tell? Who would believe you?
Just when you think heâs about to leave your suffocating room, he turns around and gets far too close for comfort once more. âI know youâll be a smart girl and wonât even think about spreading lies about me.â His grotesque thumb makes its way between your lips; you have to hold yourself from biting him. âWho knows what would happen to a little liar?âÂ
He leaves the threat unspoken. He doesnât need to tell you what would happen. Heâs well connected; during one of your trips into the forest, you found out that heâs pretty close to the colonel. Whoâd believe you, a nobody scientist, over him? He bites your bottom lip before walking to your door. âNext time, donât just lie there like a dead fish; it makes me feel like a bad guy.â He casually says before leaving. Next time? Thisâll happen again?
You donât know if you can handle this happening again. You must be in a bad dream. Yeah, that must be it. Thereâs no way this actually happened; itâs a nightmare. You start pinching and scratching your skin to wake up. But the more you realize that itâs likely not a dream, the more you hurt yourself until you're a bloody sobbing mess. You curl up into a ball and cry until you have no more tears left.Â
How could you let this happen? How could you be so naive? You shouldâve seen the signs. How could you be so stupid? This was your fault. Maybe if you didnât tempt him, you wouldnât have provoked him to do that. It was your fault for accepting his gift. It was your fault for allowing him into your room. Youâre disgusting. Youâre dirty, and the blood crusted between your thighs just proves it.
Your spiral is interrupted by the sound of your alarm going off. You donât want to go to work. You just want to rot in your bed. You can avoid Wainfleet in your bed. But if you donât go to work, then people will ask questions. You canât let anyone find out what happened. No good will come from it. You quickly put yourself together and leave your room, wearing a mask that you would wear for the next two years.Â
For the next two years, you pretend like everything is okay. You pretend like he isnât touching you inappropriately any chance he gets. Even your Avatar wasnât spared from his touch. At least he has the decency to do this away from the prying eyes of others. At least thatâs what he tells you to coerce you into feeling better about your situation. He tells you that he could tell everyone on Hellâs Gate about how much of a slut you are, but he doesnât. He tells you that he could make your life on Pandora a living hell, but he doesnât. He tells you that he gives you pleasure, not pain. He makes you thank him after an encounter.
You learned to read his moods. When heâs angry, you know to immediately get on your knees to make him feel better. If you donât, he will do it for you, and he wonât be as nice about it. Things are better for you when heâs in a good mood. There are fewer bruises to hide when he is. After the shooting at the school, you had to find more excuses to leave Hellâs Gate, but you couldnât do it too often, or else thereâd be consequences. You can only wear a mask to hide the swelling on your cheek for so long before people start asking questions.
Over the years, it got easier to mask. Like chronic pain, your pain was always there; you just learned how to live with it. The communal shower was the only place where youâd have peace. Even in the middle of the night, he never came in there. You were alone. Only in the shower did you feel clean. Sure, the water was freezing, but with how vigorously you rubbed your skin raw, it didnât matter. Youâd scrub the dirt off your skin, and the water would wash it away. You could be clean again. You could never stay away from Wainfleet for long, but at least you could make yourself clean again.
It may sound strange to others, but one of the happiest days of your life was when you got chased by a Thanator with Jake. Because of Jakeâs inability to stay in one space, you felt freedom for the first time in years. When Grace relocated your small team to the Hallelujah Mountains, you were secretly ecstatic. You wouldnât have to see Wainfleet for months. Sure, heâd probably retaliate the next time he saw you, but all you could think about was your newfound freedom and your growing crush on the man responsible for that freedom.Â
You never dared to allow yourself to think of other men. You didnât love Wainfleet; you detested him. But Lyle Wainfleet is a possessive man, and you know he wouldnât take kindly to you having eyes for anyone but him. If he found out about a crush, youâre sure heâd do all he could to ruin it for you. But being away from him, you let yourself fall in love with not only Jake but Neytiri as well. You allowed yourself to dream of a life without Wainfleet touching you. For once, you felt hope of a different life.
When you found out that Wainfleet was amongst the dead after the battle of Ayram AlusĂŹng, you felt relief. Youâd never have to worry about him touching you again. You could have peace. You let yourself live and be loved. You decided not to tell Jake and Neytiri what had happened to you because you saw no point in it. Wainfleet is dead, and youâll get over it.
Youâd be clean again.
âââ ââ ââ â âââ
After your confession, Neytiri drapes her body over yours, engulfing you in a hug. You can feel tears dripping down onto your shoulders where Neytiri has her head buried as she chants âIâm sorry over and over again. You feel numb, you finally let everything out, but will anything change? Jake stares into space before he speaks. âBaby, why didnât you tell us?â Jake asks, his voice soft yet hoarse.Â
âI thought I dealt with it.â
Those six words seem to have triggered Jake as his face scrunches up and his tail swishes behind him angrily. âDealt with?â He repeats in disbelief. âBaby, you tried to kill yourself! If Ronal didnât find you, youâd be dead! And you call that dealt with.â
Youâre too tired to deal with Jake right now, and you have no patience for him, not after what he said to Loâak. âJake, it was sixteen years ago; Iâm in my thirties. It shouldnât affect me anymore; it didnât.â Your voice gradually grows soft as you try to hold back your tears. It's embarrassing how much it still affects you, how much power he still holds over your emotions. Just seeing him has reduced you to this. Before either Jack or Neytiri could say anything else, your children enter the marui.
âMama!â Tuk shouts before running to you to hug you. âYouâre awake!â It pains you to hear just how much relief is in her voice. Ronal was right. What kind of mother were you? What kind of mother leaves her children over something that happened years ago? âSaânu, what happened?â Neteyam asks worriedly as he sits beside you, mindful of your bandages.Â
âI went to bathe in a spring, but Iâm still not used to my body, and I mustâve slipped and hit my head. Thankfully, the TsahĂŹk found me in time.â You hate having to lie to your children, but what can you do in this situation? You donât want to discuss this with your mates, let alone your children.Â
Your older children arenât satisfied with your flimsy explanation, but thankfully, they donât call you out on it. Tuk seems to take your explanation as the truth. âBe careful next time, Mama. I was so worried about you.â You know eventually youâll have to talk about it, but for now you wonât. You see that Jake wants to speak more, but you avoid his gaze. You focus on your children for now. This conversation will have to be put on hold.
A/N:
It was hard to write this chapter. It was like this chapter was pure angst. I hope I portrayed such a heavy topic well. It was my first time writing about something like this.
Lord the way you wrote that Teylan ficâŚpassed out twice reading it youâre amazing.
If possible Iâd like to request another gn! Navi Reader x Teylan, similar to the last in the sense that Teylan is secretly mated, but whatâs insane is that when Teylan introduces you to everyone, you have a BABY. Not like pregnant, no like a whole ass infant. Ofc Teylan is bombarded with questions, and the answer is simply-no one taught him about mating at TAP or the resistance. He had no idea what he was doing, and now he has a baby. But god heâs so fatherly in a soft way- a perfect anxious dad. And now everyone is reeling with the fact that TEYLAN has a KID.
I intended that the baby is bio from reader and Teylan, but it would be really nice if they/them is used for reader!
Your writing is heavenly
Fatherly Love - ONESHOT
words: 1.5k
notes: Gn! Navi Reader x Teylan, Fluff!!!
summary: Unbeknownst to Teylan, having a Mate usually meant children. He introduces you, his secret mate and your surprise child to the Sarentu, showing his fatherly side.
listening to so many father songs while writing this LOL! I hope you enjoy, I think he'd be a great papa :") explores his friendship/mentorship thing with So'lek ever so slightly too because I see them interacting in To the Ashes!!!
and honestly, this was not proof read very well and I wrote this before bed, so i am so sorry if theres errors here and there. But Happy reading! I hope you enjoy!!!
It had only been a year and a half, but a child, his child. You first told him as soon as you figured it out yourself. His eyes shot open wider than you'd ever seen, his whole body tense as a tree. He figured out why- or, how, pretty quickly. You had never even considered that he wouldn't know.
At first, he was terrified.
"I don't know what to do! I- What if I mess up? What if- What if I hurt the baby?"
He'd pace back and forth rambling away his worries to you for hours for the first few days. You reassured him through it all, you always did. You sat on a hammock, watching him pace with a small smile. This wasn't the worst reaction- far from it. It was going to be okay because you love him, like nothing else. But now you'll have something- someone, else to love just as much-- more, together.
You pondered how he'd be as a father- how you'd be as a parent. You weren't sure if you ever gave being a parent much thought- but now you felt nothing other than joy, joy that you were going to experience this with your mate. You knew the anxiousness was coming from a place of care- and that's what reassured you.
He kept pacing, and you had had enough.
"Teylan." You grabbed his wrist, anchoring him in place. His tail swished, his ears pinned back to his head. "its going to be okay, Ma' Yawne."
Teylan inclined his head, letting out a sigh, before taking you into a hug. His arms wrapped around you carefully, almost like he was afraid to hurt you in this state. You squeezed him harder in response, garnering a small 'oof' sound. He whispered into your shoulder, his forehead resting on it.
"I didn't know... I didn't know this would happen. But I'm going to do my best."
his tail curled around your leg. You rubbed his back and held each other for a while.
When she was born, Teylan helped create her songcord. He was so nervous, his hands shook, taking ahold of the thread. He got the hang of it quickly, he was good with his hands, but the nerves- those never truly went away. He sang her song with you, both of you staring at your baby with utter contentment in your hearts, snuggled together in a hammock with your new beautiful family.
He took his hand in yours as you walked towards the new resistance camp. You held your daughter securely in your other arm, both of you sneaking glances at her as much as you could. Teylan wanted to introduce you, his new family, to his Sarentu family.
"WHAT?" was the first exclamation from Tamtey-- Teylan winced, looking to his young one, luckily still asleep.
"You- You--- Is that your-- What?" Tamtey blinked, as the rest of the Sarentu family came over, alongside quite a few resistance humans-- curious of the ruckus happening.
Almost in unison, everyone's eyes widened at the sight of you and your child. It was somewhat unsettling, to you mainly- but Teylan just looked- stunned, in a happy way. He reassured you by inching closer to you, a hand coming up to your side.
Rasi was the first to speak again- "The mark of the Sarentu, she must be yours then, Teylan." she was surprised, but not so animatedly like his younger clan members. She cooed at your child, and you couldn't help but smile.
Ri'nela and Tamtey practically fell over each other with their words, looking at each other for guidance, but mainly their eyes couldn't stray from you, Teylan, and your child.
"You have had a-- a Mate this whole time? How long have you been mated?!"
"And you had a child together? Without telling us?! Teylan?!"
You couldn't help but chuckle, and Teylan awkwardly smiled. But he took your daughter in his arms, with much more confidence than he had a few days earlier-- and he stared down at her.
"Yes... I.. Uh.. I didn't know that-- well- You know! I just didn't know. And I never thought to ask, so.. Here she is! And y/n, my mate... They're so amazing-- I'm sorry I never introduced you-- but so many things just kept coming up!" Teylan explained, in his typical Teylan way.
They kind of just stared at him for a while longer, and you. But Ri'nela and Tamtey finally came over. The two of them held out their hands, whispering a gentle 'i see you', before looking down at your child. You couldn't help but stare too. She sported that Sarentu mark so well, for her little chubby cheeks.
"She is.. She is so cute." Tamtey whispered, pressing a hand to their cheek.
"I cant believe it. A new Sarentu, a baby." Ri'nela sighed out, expelling her worries. "Rasi, we will have to remember Sarentu traditions for this little one, and perhaps create new ones."
Your child awoke naturally, her eyes fluttering open quite timidly. Tamtey smiled wider, wiggling their finger towards the baby.
"...So'lek's on patrol... He's going to freak!" they giggled in realisation, and your daughter smiled. You did too.
The others gave you time alone, but you spent quite a bit of time with the family. They were simply content with being around you and your child, watching with smiles. Mainly Ri'nela stayed around, as the others were in and out.
Teylan held your daughter, holding her head the exact right way, with a huge loving grin on his face. He'd watch her tiny expressions for what felt like hours, he never got bored. She was infinitely more exciting than anything he'd experimented with tech- any firewall he'd have to crack through- he helped create her. It was an accident- but the happiest accident he had ever experienced.
Ri'nela and Rasi helped create clear out a space for the two of you to have privacy. You were sat in a pile of pillows, half asleep. Teylan had mentioned he'd be right back. You were admittedly, exhausted. Your daughter was the cutest thing you had ever seen, yes, but she was also an infant. One that needed to be fed every 2 hours or so- one that cried, a lot.
Before you could fall asleep completely, Ri'nela came up to you and grabbed you by the hand, helping you up with a smile.
"Come, we have made you something." you were curious, but you didn't expect anything of what came next.
Down through the cave systems intertwined with resistance tech, was a room tucked away. You entered and couldn't believe your eyes. Teylan was helping set up too, and Rasi stood by the door with a smile.
In the room was a large pile of pillows, a large hammock that could be shared and a much smaller one right next to it- for your child if needed. There was even a woven bag with quite a few important supplies, snacks for yourself to keep your energy up, cups and a large gourd filled with water. Colourful weavings covered the walls and there were paintings too.
Teylan turned around with a smile, and your eyes pricked with tears. It wasn't just him- he was amazing, it's true. But to be welcomed by this new family, wholly. It made you feel so loved. Teylan took your daughter so Ri'nela and Rasi could embrace you in a hug.
Tamtey timed when So'lek returned, endlessly excited to see his reaction. Honestly, you weren't bothered or unbothered by the supposed prank, if all you, your mate and your child had to do was sit comfortably near the entrance like you already had been doing- you didn't mind.
So'lek entered. He originally planned to just keep walking towards his little corner where he kept supplies, but upon seeing Tamtey's face holding back a huge grin, he squinted his eyes. He looked behind them, searching for something, and then turned your way.
Teylan and you were sat together, he held your daughter and you kept an arm against his as he did so. It was quite an obvious scene.
So'lek's eyes widened. You hadn't known that much about him personally but you had heard enough stories to know he was pretty stoic most of the time. Teylan had a bond with him, they took care of each other. "Teylan-- Is that, Eywa... What?" his brow shot upwards, his mouth opening with a shocked half smile.
Tamtey burst out in laughter, unable to contain it. So'lek barely even registered them, and the two of them came over. Teylan explained everything, and introduced you, in a similar fashion to how he had before. So'lek still had that shocked expression pretty much throughout the entire retelling, though his mouth was now closed.
He broke the silence with a small amused huff, looking down at your child. "She has the Sarentu mark." there was a softness in his eyes, his mouth tugged into the smallest of smirks.
"I must say- I never expected the first born of the new Sarentu generation to be from you-- But you will be a great father. I know you will." He placed his hand on Teylan's shoulder, patting him.
You knew then, more than anything else, that this child would grow up so loved. And that you would be well loved in this new family too.
Iâd like to request a Teylan x Gn! Navi reader if possible, where Teylan introduces you to everyone else at the base for the first time and theyâre just like âwait Teylan gets bitches??? đâ and are even more surprised at how smitten they are for each other
You're Teylan's Mate To Be? - ONESHOT
words: 1.4k
notes: Gn!Na'vi reader, fluff and more fluff!! generally more 'chill' and 'confident' reader, (does not replace Tamtey)
summary: Teylan, your future mate, introduces you to everyone at the base and things don't go the way you suspected!
thank you so much for the request!! I hope its to your liking it was so fun writing for him :"D he's so cute
You and Teylan met at the Great Na'vi Games that the Zeswa held. It was there that you saw the curious young na'vi interacting with Kin. It amused you endlessly to see how he interacted with the others at the camp, how he interacted with Zakru. You even heard that it was here that he rode a pa'li for the first time. He was charming, seeing Pandora's wonders for the first time so purely.
You met around the fire one night. He was sitting on a log, holding some sort of sky people 'technology' as they called it. Interested, you sat down next to him, holding some meat skewers from the hunt you had partaken in earlier in the day. He awkwardly fidgeted with something on his strange vest- must have been some sky person attire.
"You must be Sarentu." you said to him with a smile, offering him a skewer.
"Oh! Um- yes! I am! Wow, did this come from the hunt earlier? Thank you!" He gratefully accepted the skewer and started eating with you.
You both ate in silence for a while, comfortably. He looked like like he wanted to tell you something, so you scooted closer and looked over his shoulder. "What is this... gadget you have? Why do you use it?"
"Oh!" Teylan blinked, stunned. You had grown to realize that that was not common- but he swallowed with a grin "You're interested in what's on my tablet?"
"Yes, I suppose I am." something about this strange Sarentu made your mouth curve into a smile.
"Well- actually- right now I'm looking at the data of the comms of the RDA, so we can track them! And make sure they don't come back again-" Teylan went on and on. You barely followed while he spoke his sky people words, but you listened anyway. It was nice to listen, and you found it cute how invested he was in this, 'tablet' he called it.
âŹâââââââââââââââââââââ§ââââââââââââââââââââââŹ
The two of you grew closer through the games and even closer through the months you were apart. Since the games had ended, Teylan had given you comms and a holotablet to communicate. Teylan was worried that you wouldn't like to speak to him anymore, that you'd forget about him, or that you wouldn't like using sky people technology to talk to him. But you didn't feel any of those things.
For the first month or so you two spent hours each day speaking to each other. Now, you had learned to enjoy the 'silence' with one another. You felt calm in each others presence, but you didn't lose the spark. You learned new things about one another every day, you both talked of your pasts, and you accepted each other wholly.
The others had noticed Teylan being off on his own more, and they were somewhat worried about him at first- but soon enough they had realized, he seemed genuinely happier. Tamtey in particular was so intrigued by Teylan's strange happy moods, poking at him lovingly to tell them what was going on. It wasn't like he was usually sad- he was happy with the Sarentu family they had built, but he seemed so different, in a good way.
"What has you smiling Teylan?"
"Oh- Just some data!" he'd lie. It worked though.
So'lek found him out on his one day, outside the base and speaking on a private comms line. He didn't overhear anything really- but he saw the look on Teylan's face, how content he seemed, and understood what must have been going on.
âŹâââââââââââââââââââââ§ââââââââââââââââââââââŹ
The Sarentu family, minus Teylan-- had naturally gathered to talk in the cave of their clouded forest base. Just as Ri'nela was about to ask where Teylan had gone, the group turned to see him, and you, walking from the cave entrance.
None of the other Sarentu had ever met you before- not to mention anyone at the resistence. Tamtey squinted at you with a hand to their chin, perhaps they had seen you before and were trying to figure you out.
Upon seeing their reactions, you turned to Teylan giving him a teasing smile, and whispered "You didn't tell them yet, did you?"
"Well- I- uh.. I wanted to tell them today! But then you said you were arriving early and-"
"Don't worry about it Ma' Teylan." You whispered back, a hand gently pressing against his elbow, guiding him towards the others. Teylan's cheeks burned bright purple. You met the Sarentu, the family Teylan gushed about so often. They looked confused, all but So'lek, who sported a small smile of recognition.
Ri'nela smiled gently, "Welcome back Teylan, and who might this be?" she took her hand to her forehead in gesturing to the arrival of both Na'vi, her brother and this new friend. You did the same.
"I forgot to tell any of you- uh.. I was going to say it today- but this is y/n! I am courting them!" Teylan kept clarifying, saying "well, we are courting each other-" but it felt like time stopped.
Both Tamtey and Ri'nela's mouths dropped, their eyes blinking. Even Priya had heard it and practically fallen over from the shock.
So'lek was the first to speak, replying straightforwardly, "It is nice to meet you, I am glad for you Teylan, truly." He clapped him on the back, and you couldn't help but chuckle.
Ri'nela and Tamtey's mouths kept open, as other members of the resistance who had heard the news came over to say congratulations.
"You're Teylan's mate to be?" Tamtey's mouth somehow opened wider, and you felt a flush over your cheeks. It felt so strange to hear it come from another person.
"Yes.. I am." You took a hand around Teylan's waist and he placed his hand on yours, slightly shy, but plain in his affection. Without missing a beat, you turned your head and pressed a kiss onto his cheek. Teylan let out a small 'eek' and smiled widely. "Hey!"
Tamtey was still blinking it disbelief, and Ri'nelas eyes winded slightly too. She could never have guessed this--you-- were what was putting Teylan in such a good mood in the past months. She shook it off with a smile "I am glad for you too, Teylan."
You had resolved to stay for a while with Teylan. You had flown quite a long way by your Ikran anyway, and it would take at least a day or two for them to recuperate. Teylan opted to show you around, always lingering near you as he showed you all his interesting tech.
He surprised you when you were bent over looking at some sort of table with 'holo-images', his tail wrapped around your leg and he bent over with you, his face close to yours. It sent a small shiver through your body. He whispered to you,
"Um- Can I- Can I kiss you?" He looked nervous but resolved, to show his affection for the person he had spent so long with over comms. He always wondered what it would truly be like to hug you, kiss you, to be with you.
You flushed, surprised by his initiative, but nodded, "of course." the two of you shared a gentle kiss, your hand reaching up to cup his face. You heard him let out a small joyful giggle as you did so, and you felt your tail lash in excitement. "So cute." you smiled, as you pulled away.
Upon looking up, you realized half the resistance was staring at the two of you. You felt yourself sweat, blinking up at the many eyes that quickly turned away. Teylan didn't seem to notice, so you took that as a sign to keep touring the base with him, and listening to his passionate ramblings.
âŹâââââââââââââââââââââ§ââââââââââââââââââââââŹ
You were laid against a few pillows with Teylan in your arms. You were explaining something cool you saw outside in the clouded forest, a place you had never visited prior. Teylan nodded along, he decided to take off his hat because it was uncomfortable against your bare skin. You hadn't even needed to ask- he just noticed it.
Teylan couldn't be more comfortable, something that wasn't always easy for him within the resistance. Having his head pressed to your chest, hearing your heartbeat, it calmed his soul completely. He wrapped his arms around your waist as he cuddled into you more.
You were almost falling asleep. Teylan was completely asleep by now, with you softly petting Teylan's hair he didn't stand a chance. Hearing his worries, his doubts about his life and identity over comms, It pleased you more than anything seeing him so calm. Your eyes were half lidded when you overheard Ri'nela speaking to Tamtey, they were quiet- but not enough.
"I can't believe Teylan managed to get such a Na'vi to fall for him!" you heard Tamtey say quietly, their tone joking. You almost got upset, but you couldn't help but let out an amused huff.
"I was skeptical at first, a new Na'vi we had never met before, and Teylan just announcing they were mates! But seeing the two of them so-- in love, I don't feel worried at all. They will take good care of him." Ri'nela said, you could hear the smile in her voice in the last part of her sentence.
"And Teylan will take good care of them." Another voice, So'lek's. You couldn't help but smile as you drifted off, maybe these strange Sarentus weren't so bad after all.Â

!!AFAA SPOILERS!!
ââââ ę° á§ŕˇá§ ęą ââââ
âItâs getting goddamn late, where are they?â Jakeâs pacing back and forth around the mauri. His nerves on edge after everyone laid down for bedâŚeverybody except for you and Loâak. Under the annoyance thereâs a flash of worry peaking through, âSheâs never been this late coming home.â
Neytiri glances towards Kiri, Tuk, & Spider to make sure theyâre still asleep. Sheâll explain your absence to them in the morning. But right now all she can handle is telling Jake, and hopefully getting him to realize his faults.
âThey arenât coming back tonight, Ma Jake.â The words hang heavy between them. He spins around with an incredulous look on his face, âWhat the hell do you mean?â
Tears fill Neytiriâs eyes once more tonight, âThey need space from youâŚspace to process the hurtful words you spewed at themâŚand I pray you can put your ego aside and apologize,â Her eyes get a bit dark as the next words leave her lips, âAnd JakeâŚif we lose them because of this?â A sense of dread runs through him, âIâll never forgive you.â
He makes his way across the pod to wrap his arms around her. The warmth of his body swaddling around her like a blanket, but its usual calming presence is missing. His voice is low as he speaks, âIâll fix this, baby. Iâll bring them back.â
He leaves a kiss on the back of Neytiriâs head before he heads out into the dark. Jake isnât sure if itâs the wind or the heaviness weighing on his heart thatâs sending chills across his body. He knows he fucked up, but surely not enough for you to leaveâŚright?
đ đ đ đ đ
The sand feels comforting under your feet as you stroll down the waterline to clear your head. Youâve never spent a night away from Jake and Neytiri since youâve been mated.
No matter how tired, far, or annoyedâŚyou always made sure to end the night wrapped up in each otherâs arms. It usually turned into you smooshed right in the middle of them. No matter what position you started in youâd wake up with your cheek against a chest and one pressed up to your back. You always thought of it as the safest place in the world..and despite everything going on? You still do.
So as much as you donât want to go back to your shared mauri podâŚyouâre still postponing the walk back to your own. Itâs daunting to think of waking up alone. Especially in such a new environment when youâve already been separated from everything else you know.
You miss the forest. You miss your friends, the animals, the Hallelujah MountainsâŚ.but mostly you miss your mother-in-law.
Moâat always treated you like one of her own children. Youâd made a point to learn how to heal from her; often bringing the children to visit her while Jake and Neytiri tended to their clan duties. You bonded during those meetings, and a deep respect had formed. She always knew what to say and how to fix every problem with ease. Itâs times like these that you miss her presence more than ever. You need a guiding hand to help you navigate this, but instead youâve resorted to running away.
Youâre only pulled from your thoughts when you come upon a shadowy figure not far from you. And the closer you get? The more your heart starts to sink. Itâs dark out, but you can still recognize the faint outline of your youngest son. Your feet pick up speed as your stomach starts to turnâŚsomethingâs wrong. A motherly instinct kicking in thatâs been baked into your DNA the day Neytiri had birthed Neteyam into this world.
Thatâs when you see itâ the gun. Itâs resting just under Loâakâs chin, tears streaming down his face as he stares out into the ocean. Heâs breathing heavy, chest rising rapidly as one hand rests on the barrel and the otherâs down with his thumb on the trigger.
Youâre full on sprinting at this point, lungs getting ready to let out a blood curdling scream when Loâak beats you to it. The sound that comes from him is one of pure, unfiltered agony. He throws the rifle from his hands, the metal sliding across the beach. All of the emotions heâs been keeping buried finally letting themselves wash over him.
âLOâAK!â Itâs broken and your voice cuts out halfway through, but you donât care. You just throw yourself onto the ground, arms pulling him in as close to you as physically possible. You canât hide the sobs racking your body, limbs shaking as you keep trying to touch him to make sure heâs okayâŚto make sure youâre not hallucinating; because losing two sons so close together would surely drive anybody crazy.
He doesnât say anything, just lets you hold him as you both cry. And in the haze of your brain trying to fully comprehend the weight of the moment, your mind flashes back to the day you found out you were pregnant with him.
It was a day like any other, normal in all the best ways. Youâd made your way with Neteyam and Kiri over to visit their grandmother, and as soon as you walked in? She had a grin so wide she couldnât hide it. It had come to her in a dreamâ Eytukan told her of the joy he felt knowing of their new grandson growing inside your belly. She knew it was true as soon as sheâd woken up, heart full of hope that youâd stop by that day. And by the grace of Eywa you did.
You love all your children equallyâŚbut secretly? Loâak will always hold a special place in your heart. While Neytiri gave birth to Tuk, she reminds them both of you so much. Your âmini-meâ as they call her. But Loâak had come out as a perfect clone of your husband. A baby so headstrong it was comical at times. And heâs yours.
Every little bit of him you grew from scratchâ even the parts he hates. His cute little fingers and his eyebrows that are oh so expressive? Those are your favorite parts of him. The ones that remind you of your husbandâŚthose are the ones you cherish the most.
You remember how feisty he was before he even made his appearance, little legs always kicking and moving around inside of your womb. Kiri had poked at your tummy curiously, little eyes full of wonder at the little feet and hand prints poking out of your blue skinâŚin contrast, Neteyam cried because he thought his baby brother was a monster inside of you. But they both loved him the moment they laid eyes on him, effortlessly accepting him into their hearts without a second thought.
You remember how happy Jake and Neytiri were when you told them. How Tiri instantly started making new pieces of jewelry, baskets, and a million other things in preparation for the Sully addition. Jake had told your belly stories of his days on Earth every night, hand drawing lazy shapes on the skin as his eyes glowed with love.
Itâs hard to believe thatâs the same man who you saw tonight. The same man who looked at his son with such detest and disappointment. You just want to fix this. You wish you had a reset button so you could just go back to the days before everything got so complicated.
You shouldâve stood up for him at the council, and you shouldâve intervened between him and Jake sooner. All the things you shouldâve done wonât stop screaming at you in your mind. You canât help the feeling that youâve failed your sons. Oneâs dead and the other? He hates living so much heâd rather join him in eternal death.
The silence grows as his sniffling slows down, and you pull away to cup his face in your hands. âYou are so loved Loâak, Iâm sorry I didnât stand up for you sooner.â One of your hands comes down to rest lightly over his chest, âYou have a strong heart, ma âitan.â (My son)
He lets more tears escape his eyes, but they arenât as violent anymore. Heâs letting the pain come out freely now, instead of letting it consume him whole. The next words are selfish, but raw. âPlease donât leave me!â
âYou are so much more than anyone gives you credit for. Your father loves you so much Loâak. Please, know that. He just has a hard time expressing it. Heâs a marine at heartâ trying to stay strong for all of us when really heâs drowning just as bad as we are.â
A sad smile crosses your lips, âYou remind him so much of himself that it scares him. So he acts out of fear, not true anger. And I know none of that is an excuse, but I also know he can be better. I know you remember what he was like before the sky people came back. I know that manâs still in there. Heâs just too scared to let his guard down like that again with the RDA so close.â
And for the first time since youâve found him tonightâ he speaks, âI just want him to see me. The real me. Not all the mistakes Iâve madeâŚI just want to be enough for him.â
Your heart breaks hearing his words. Heâs been through so muchâŚlost so much in the short amount of time heâs been alive. How do you even begin to fix this? âI know, baby. I know,â and youâre pulling him back into a tight embrace. His head rests under your chin, letting his body fall into yours. âHeâll come around, I promise.â
But thatâs a lie. You donât know if Jake will swallow his pride, but you pray to Eywa he will. A desperate plea screaming from your brain out into the void, begging for her to hear your cries. Not for your sake, but your sonâs. Because Jake might be Navi now, but he can still be so blind at times.
Thereâs a voice calling your sonâs name that you recognize as Tsireya. He barely lifts his head as she stumbles to the place on the other side of him. She puts her hands on his arm, eyes drifting from the gun back to you both. The tears come as the realization sets in, her head hanging low as she fights to gain her composure again. You let a hand come out to rest on her knee, drawing soothing circles into her skin like you still do to Tuk.
Youâve seen the way they look at each other. The small giggles and smiles as she taught Loâak the Metkayina ways. When you first got here heâd often bragged to you about how good of a teacher she was; which was shortly followed by his older brother making kissy faces and teasing him to no end. You knew Neteyam wasnât wrong though. It was evident in the way Loâak would throw something at his head, a furious blush taking over his cheeks, the tips of his ears, and nose. Your son is just like this father, and yeahâŚheâs got it bad.
You think youâre actually hallucinating now. Because just the thought of Jake has your brain tricking you into hearing his voice. It isnât until Loâak is busting out of your and Tsireyaâs grasp, legs marching back towards land before you can realize whatâs going on.
âItâs not my fault!â Thereâs new tears springing from his eyes. You stumble to your feet and start running to separate them. The last thing your son needs right now is another screaming match with his father. âThatâs not my fault!â You reach them just as Loâak shoves Jakeâs chest, taking a few steps back as the look of regret sinks into his features.
You quickly position yourself between them once again, âUnless youâre here to apologize to your son, then you can turn around and leave.â
Thereâs a shiver that goes through him at your tone. Youâve never been this sharp and cold with him before. Never greeted him without that stupid little lovey-dovey smile on your face. But any trace of that version of his wife is gone at the moment, and all Jake wants is to get her back.
He takes a deep breath before picking his next words carefully, âI came to bring you both back home. We can talk in the morning, but Sullyâs stick together, remember?â
A fresh wave of anger flows over your body, eyes peaking behind you to see Tsireya confronting Loâak. You turn to them, âTsireya, could you please take Loâak to the mauri your mother arranged for us tonight?â
She just nods as she wraps her arms around your son to guide him in the right direction. He doesnât even fight it, just keeps his watery eyes locked onto his dad before he has to turn his head.
You turn back around after you feel satisfied knowing sheâll take good care of him. âWe are not your property, Jake. You donât get to just show up and tell us what to do and then expect us to blindly follow it. Especially not after the way you fucked up.â
He winces at the last few words, a sense of guilt radiating in his body. âI know I fucked up, baby. I know I said shit that wasnât true, things that shouldâve never come out of my mouthâŚbut we can get through this. Weâve never spent a night apart as a familyâŚletâs not start now.â
You want to give in to him. You want to forgive and forget and move on like nothing happenedâŚbut you canât. The rage that had simmered down? Itâs boiling back to life the longer you stare at him, âNo. Iâm staying with Loâak tonightâŚaway from you. He needs space, Jakeâ You mean you need space.â He cuts you off.
âDonât keep putting this on Loâak when youâre the one who has their feelings hurt like a child! Heâs strong, okay? Heâll be fine. What he doesnât need is to see his parents arguing to the point of getting pseudo-divorced!â
Heâs letting that tinge of anger cloud his judgment again. His rose-colored glasses that make him the hero of every story are still strapped over his eyes, but you know exactly how to knock them off.
You grab his wrist as you drag him back towards the scene of devastation youâd just left. âWhere are we going?â Jakeâs not as angry as he asks, just more of an annoyed tone now. Itâs only a few more steps before you drop his hand to turn around, finger pointing out towards the ground.
Jakeâs gaze follows your finger, and beside him laying in the sand is one of his rifles. âPick it up,â your voice is null of any emotion. You almost seem like a zombie with the way youâve went numb. âWhat?â Jakeâs brows furrow, annoyance being completely consumed by confusion.
âPick. It. Up.â You havenât even blinked yet, eyes staring holes through the man in front of you. And Jake would never admit thisâ but heâs scared as fuck right now. The look in your eyes and the emotionless tone that drips from your voice? Heâs sure you could kill him right here..and no doubt his marine combat skills wouldnât be enough to save him.
Jake bends his knees as he picks up the raided RDA gun. It somehow feels heavier in his hands than usual, but he just chalks it up to the intensity of your sour mood. But when he stands back to his full height and keeps looking over the metal in his hands? Thatâs when you let it slip.
âI found our son with that rifle pressed against his head,â youâre not even sad anymore. No, youâre fucking livid.
His body freezes up, and Jakeâs ears flatten as he takes in your confession. A look of pain, guilt, and shame start to take over his features. His eyes fall back to the gun in his hands and it suddenly feels like itâs burning him alive.
So he drops it as a nauseated feeling fills his gut, flashes of his sonâs life running through his head. He canât even speak, just keeps staring at his hands as they shake.
âHow fucking dare you accuse me of using our son as an excuseâ that Iâm the one actually doing him harm,â A snarl comes out as your lip twitches. âNot when your words rung so heavy in his head that he pressed the barrel of a gun to it!â
You donât even give him a chance to respond, but heâs in such a state of shock right now that he couldnât give you a coherent response even if he wanted to.
He just drops to the sand, eyes still stuck as his brain and body fight each other inside of him. And in that moment you see a flash of your son. You almost reach out to comfort him before you stop yourself, and without another word you slip away from the beach.
You leave him there to soak in the devastation once more, but itâs not like he wasnât the cause. Youâre letting him sit in it the way weâve had to. Letting it stew around inside of him until he realizes the error of his ways.
At least, you hope he will. If this doesnât wake him up? Youâre not sure what willâŚand that thought is truly terrifying.
đ đ đ đ đ
When you make it to your mauri youâre surprised to see the Oloâeyktan and the TsahĂŹk standing inside. You address them by their titles as you walk in, hand gesturing from your forehead down as you greet them.
âPlease, call us by our names.â Tonowari had a warm smile on his face.
âYes, no need to be so formal, y/n.â Ronal calls from the floor. Sheâs helping Tsireya and Loâak gather the right supplies to fix Neytiriâs broken bow. A singular happy tear falls from your eye at the sight. Loâak has a genuine smile on his face, even if itâs small. You notice itâ a mother always notices.
âI am sorry if weâve offended you somehow,â Tonowari has a concerned look on his face as he observes your reaction.
You wipe the tear away quickly, a quiet laugh escaping your lungs. âNo, the complete opposite actually.â A look of gratitude shines from your eyes, âItâs been hard to find friends here and a place to fit in. Your family has been the kindest, and I donât know how I can ever repay you for your generosity.â
A hand comes to caress yours, âYou do not owe us anything. Just keep learning our ways and making this your home. Thatâs the best way for you to repay us,â Ronalâs voice is the softest youâve ever heard it. âAnd accept our invitation to sit with us tomorrow morning at the morning meal.â
A wave of anxiety goes through you at that. Youâve always sat next to one of your mates if not right in-between them during meals. Hell, not even just for meals but everywhere. Youâve always been beside them, a sign of the strength in your bond. But that bond is shaky right now, and you canât really say no to the leaders of the clanâŚand maybe the rest of the villagers will start to accept you more if they see you close to their Oloâeyktan and TsahĂŹk.
âOnly if youâre comfortable of course,â Tonowari cuts in after seeing your hesitation.
Your eyes flit back over to Tsireya and Loâak as they work together seamlessly. He looks the happiest heâs been since the passing of your eldest, and thatâs what truly solidifies your answer. You turn back to the with a soft smile, âIâd love to join you. I know Loâak and you havenât always seen eye-to-eye, but I can see that you have grown to care for him. Thank you.â
âWith the way those two are going, Iâd say we have no choice but to get along.â Tonowari jokes and Ronal is quick to follow him up, âMight as well accept him now before theyâre trying to sneak off in a few years.â
You let out a genuine laugh at that, not having seen this side of them yet. Itâs a breath of fresh air. And you desperately need it after the day youâve had. It isnât long before theyâre bidding their goodbyes. Loâak and Tsireya dawdle until her mother is practically pulling her back towards home.
The night settles down calmly after that, the tension slowly melting from your shoulders. Not completely but enough for you to get some sleep. It isnât the same as being smushed by two loving cuddle bugs, but it will do for now.
Youâve left the privacy shade open so you can keep an eye on Loâak. Every little bump and creak has your eyes peeling open to check on his resting form, only letting your eyes close once you realize heâs still here and breathing. Youâre still on edge from the beach, and the effects are lingering in your body. You donât know when or if youâll ever be the same again.
đ đ đ đ đ
The sunrise trickles in through the flaps of your Mauri as it opens. It rouses you from your sleep, eyes blinking a few times to get used to the light. You see Loâak stretching as he yawns, an arm full of cloth you donât recognize in his grasp.
âWhatâs that, Lo?â The childhood nickname rolls off your tongue. With your mind wandering back so much lately itâs just a natural response.
âTsireya brought us some new clothes to wear for breakfast,â thereâs a light blush still dusting his features. âGifts from her family so we can feel more at home with the Metkayina.â
You mirror the same smile on his face, getting up and making your way over to get your share of the clothing.
âWell then we shouldnât be late. Get changed and weâll head out,â you land a quick kiss on his head before retreating back to your side of the Mauri.
The privacy shade is pulled closed as you quickly put on the new purple loincloth and seashell beaded top. The designs are intricate, and you can tell someone put a lot of love and passion into crafting them. You notice the tiny seashells that hang from the tips of your loincloth that match the ones on your top. How theyâve woven the strands of cloth to resemble the fishing nets they useâ every single detail has been planned out. Nothing has been placed without a specific purpose, and the outcome is stunningly gorgeous.
You feel a little conflicted. The clothes are more than beautiful, but they seem too nice to just be given with nothing in return. Youâd never turn down such a gift, you know itâd be seen as rudeâŚ.but you also know your mates.
And you know sitting beside another couple is already going to throw a curveball at themâŚbeing adorned in that coupleâs gifted clothesâ especially ones like this? Itâs a fight already startedâŚbut you have no clue of the true mess itâs going to cause.
So you take a deep breath, eyes closing as you let your heartbeat settle down. A voice suddenly pulls you back to the moment, âMooom, come on! Why do girls take like forever to get ready?â
âIâm coming!â You pull back the curtain with a playful scoff. âYou know, you are really impatient when it involves getting to see your girlfriendâ sheâs not my girlfriend!â Loâak cuts you off with a childish stomp of his foot.
âOh Iâm sorry, your friend who is a girl that you like and want to kiiissssâ OH MY EYWA! Youâre impossible!â He throws his hands up as he heads out of the Mauri, a fresh purple tint lighting up his face as you follow behind him.
Loâak runs off as soon as he sees Tsireya waving him over to the seat she has saved for him. You take your time as your eyes scan the crowd of hungry villagers gathered around. Youâre almost to your new seat when your feet lock in place.
Your eyes meet Neytiriâs as a hopeful look comes across her. Sheâs pleading you with her eyes to come sit with them, to just let it rest for this morning. You donât look at Jake, but you can feel his eyes burning into you. You almost give in just for her, and you know you will if you glance at your children.
But a familiar deep voice pulls you from their trance as a hand is placed on your shoulder, âCome, we have saved a seat for you.â
You donât trust your voice so you just nod and give him a small smile. Letting him lead you to the seat between him and Ronal with his touch not leaving you until youâre fully seated.
The meal goes well, the leaders of the clan are a lot more laid back than youâd originally assumed. They even moved some of their food onto your plate so you could try a wider variety of their cuisine. Itâs been a little hard to adjust to the abrupt diet change, but youâve grown to love the saltiness of the sea.
The stress has slipped from your mind, and you realize maybe this space is the best thing for you right now. Itâs giving you and Loâak time to breathe without having to worry about stepping on anybodyâs toes. To be free of the pressures and responsibilities of being Toruk Maktoâs familyâ not forever. Just long enough to take a break from that daunting title.
The meal ends quicker than you wouldâve liked, but the duties of the clan will not do themselves. The day is ready to officially start as everyone cleans up and makes their way from the communal fire pit.
Youâre just starting to walk off to start your journey of foraging for herbs, when Loâak runs up to ask if he and Tsireya can go work on Neytiriâs bow before continuing more lessons. âAsk Tonowari first and be respectful of his wishes, okay?â
âYes maâam!â Theyâre both quick to scurry off to the direction of Tsireyaâs father. Loâakâs head snaps back towards you as the young girl still pulls him through the crowd, âOh and thank you!â
You just shake your head with a smile, waving them off as you go to turn back around. But youâre met with a familiar chest that you bump into, stumbling back a bit before his hand grabs you by the forearm and pulls. Jake is hauling you just like he did to Loâak the previous night, grip so strong thereâs no way to stop him from dragging you off.
âHey!â Your hand comes up to push on his back, âWhat the fuck is wrong with you? Let me go!â
But your hand that youâre using to try and distance yourself with is suddenly caught by a much smaller one than your husbandâs. You move your gaze over to see a very, very pissed Neytiri. Your ears flatten at the sight, your eyes flickering down and away from her bone chilling stare.
They donât release you into youâre all back in the walls of your family mauri. Jake still hasnât turned around yet, his hands resting against a post as his head hangs between his arms.
Neytiri is the first to break the silence, âI knew you were upsetâŚbut not enough to replace us so soon.â
âW-What? Tiri I havenât replaced you guâ OH BULLSHIT!â Jakeâs hand slams against the post they rest against. He turns to face you, angry tears rolling down his face as he stalks towards you.
âYou show up to the morning meal dressed in their clanâs clothes, smelling like them, sit right between themâŚand you really want us to believe you didnât spread your fucking legs for them the first chance you got?â
Your eyes bulge out of your head, a winded gasp leaving your lips. A look of disbelief crosses your face, âYou think I slept with them?â
Jakeâs breath comes out ragged, âDonât play goddamn stupid, y/n.â
âIâm not!â Angry tears spill out as you shove him away from you, just like Loâak had done the night before.
âThey gave me and Loâak new clothes and invited us to sit with them this morning because everyone and their fucking grandma knows we arenât getting along right now!â You choke on the words as sorrow starts to settle in. âAnd itâs not like I have any friends here, so yes I sat with them. And yes I accepted their clothes because this is supposed to be our new home, Jake! Youâve been pushing us to fit in and accommodate to the new challenges, and thatâs what Iâm fucking doing!â
You turn to back away, your cloudy eyes falling onto both of them. âIâd never cheat on youâ NEVER! Do you really think of me so lowly that Iâd do that to you? That at the first sign of trouble Iâll just jump into bed with the next couple thatâll have me? Do you really think Iâm that selfish to break up our family?â
Neytiriâs crying now, a sense of dread filling her at ever letting her jealousy convince her that youâd betray them. You donât feel safe with them right now, she can tell by how youâre hugging yourself in an attempt to self soothe. âI-Iâm so sorry,â it comes out broken. She falls to her knees as the emotions overtake her, whispered pleas to forgive her wonât stop coming from her mouth.
Jake just stares at the ground, eyes unwilling to meet yours now. He was so strong willed a few seconds agoâ so sure of himself. Now heâs been replaced by the scared little boy you so easily recognize.
Heâs not apologizing, but heâs accepting what youâre saying as fact all the same. You canât lie to save your life. So no matter what the demons in his head keep saying, he canât deny your truthful words. He canât deny that he was wrong, and that heâs made this worse before it can ever get betterâŚif it can ever get better.
âI have to go foraging,â your voice is small as you announce it. You make your way over to Jakeâs combat box and pick up the black collar. âIâll take my comms just in case.â
And just like the two times before, you leave. You put on the tactical gear and walk out of the flap theyâd just drug you through. And just like those times beforeâ they let you.
Na'vi used:
Skxawng - moron/idiot
Tam tam - calm, be content, there there
Mawey - calm
