As many of you know by now, being an intermediate student of Japanese can be really miserable. You know a chunk of basic grammar, you can understand everything in your textbooks, but the moment you step into the real world of reading Japanese, everything feels foreign again. If you are one of those people who wants to transition into reading Japanese literature in its original state, sometimes it feels like there is no way you will ever get there. Well, that isn’t the case!
Giles Murray’s Breaking into Japanese Literature: Seven Modern Classics in Parallel Text is your big step into reading Japanese literature, real literature, the books your professors would assign you in English. While it may not be for everyone, I think this book might be exactly what some of our readers have been looking for, especially those who like crime, drama, and a good old fashioned Japanese ghost story.
This book has one of my favorite features of having Japanese on one side, English on the other, and a follow-along dictionary underneath. There is furigana too, so for those of us who have an easier time remembering the meanings of kanji than the readings, it is pretty darn convenient. And beginners can still follow along with help on every single page, as long as they are stubborn enough.

Lasers and blasters were considered obsolete (to the extent of uselessness) way before the federation was even founded.
a star destroyer probably wouldn’t pose much of a threat to even the NX Enterprise, and regarding the Millenium Falcon, the federation Enterprises all had tractor beams.
Like it's still true that the Enterprise would never give the Falcon any reason to open fire. But with only a few exceptions in the series Federation explorer ships are still casually prepared for war. Plenty of other governments in the series react to an Enterprise showing up like "oh shit look fellas I don't want any trouble".
Where this idea came from that the Falcon even WANTED to posture and start fights with random ships, I can't imagine. Han literally only ever advertises it as fast enough to run away! It only engages the Empire as either part of a fleet or a desperate attempt to stall while its hyperdrive warmed up.
Lost Colors update
I was about to start playing today because I am determined to get out a second video for y’all this weekend, and guess who just got interrupted just as she was about to turn on the system by a delivery....? Hello, Lost Colors Perfect Guide! What excellent timing. :D
Lost Colors Translated LP update
Proceeding on schedule.
I figured out how to get on to the Lelouch path for the Geass route (figured it makes sense to start there?), but also bought the Perfect Guide, which claims to be good for getting the gallery to 100% and should cut down on my “what if there’s an extra ending to this route that I can only get by choosing Ougi and Shirley conversations during a waxing gibbous moon?!” anxiety.
Basically what I’m gonna do is play through the game a few times to nail down the best path narratively through a given route (what will be most fun for people to watch when they want to see a Lelouch ending? Avoiding random chunks of other paths seems like a good bet), then record it, then release episodes with subtitles attached. Hopefully the default captions will be readable on top of the text boxes…….
I expected to get started recording this weekend (and I definitely need to at least make sure the Elgato I bought works before the return window closes), buuuuut I’ve got to sit the JLPT on Sunday so that’s gonna eat a chunk of time.
Bonus update: I bought the Kallen and Knight of Round novels, which as I understand it take place between R1 and R2 with additional flashbacks (to Kallen when she was younger maybe?, and to Marianne’s time as a Round). Those are gonna be the next big project.
Bonus update #2: there was a new Illust Drama shown at the anniversary event, which should be included on the blueray release sometime later this month. If no one beats me to it (which is likely! because the fandom’s waking up again), I’ll see if I can’t fansub that one, too.
I figured out what I’m gonna use for testing: the adorable menu conversations!! They’re short but also something I want to share with you people. (In CC and Lelouch’s first one she says, “You’re not the main character this time, is that okay with you?” and he grumbles and says it’s fine) (Suzaku and Lelouch are just adorable and heartbreaking)…
Maybe if the video comes out long enough with just what I’ve unlocked it can even be a preview?
Oh and also my BR box set had all the anime scenes from Lost Colors in HD. That might be worth an upload as a bonus… (you get to see the student council all in yukata for their hot springs sub route).
Also I’m literally about to sit the JLPT but I thought you would all like to know that recording was easy and painless! Yay! (There’s a significant delay if I’m recording at max quality though which miiiight make it worthwhile to HDMI back out from the Elgato to the TV while actually playing.)
I have a video that’s a little under two minutes long of subtitled title screen dialogue :3 I got some help from another lovely person so I’ll be making the video public as soon as I know what screen name to credit them with!

Everything is fine, the recording is working~ Polishing up the translations and experimenting a bit with sub timing, etc.
Also I got inspired for SuzaLulu week soooo oops. (If you’re just here for translations, I encourage you to blacklist my #not a translation tag~, though they’ll also be tagged #fic.) And I need to be getting more sleep than I have been :P

I’m possibly too proud of myself for having figured out a way to win the Narita battle, especially since the outcome of it probably doesn’t matter at all. (Rai is only in a very small skirmish, which doesn’t affect the overall outcome at Narita, since he’s far-removed from the actual battle between Cornelia, Zero, and the “White Knightmare”.) Especially-especially because the Perfect Guide should arrive before next weekend, and it should tell me how to do this stuff…

Hi again, Code Geass fandom!
The Valentine’s Day fanwork exchange will be back this Valentine’s (2017). As before, the exchange will follow a pattern familiar from Secret Santa events; you fill out a form, we assign you a person to draw/write/make a fanwork gift for and someone to make yours.
You can already find the sign-up form here. We’re still trying to get a feel for how busy people are this year, but the tentative deadline for sign-ups is January 1, and February 14 for submissions.
So this is important: if you are thinking of participating, would these dates work for you? We opened the form already to avoid the last-minute rush of last year, but we’re still in the polling stage.

Mistranslation in episode 10
So there was a pretty weird mistranslation in episode 10–weird, because the mistranslation doesn’t make any sense?? They added words that confused viewers, so I’m here to clear things up!
It’s pretty weird, this exchange–Yuuri asking Victor to give him some words for good luck, Victor saying he’ll do so…and then nothing really coming.
It’s because that’s not what either of them said, lmao.
In the first cap, Yuuri is explaining what the ring is for, and after mentioning that it’s gratitude for all Victor has done for him thus far, he adds that it’s also 「おまじない用」 (omajinai you), meaning “for good luck”. He doesn’t ask Victor to say anything; he is explaining that the ring is meant to be a good-luck charm.
Victor thinks this is fine and decides to go along with it (rather than press Yuuri for some deeper meaning), saying the ring that he’s just placed on Yuuri’s finger will be 「何も考えなくていいおまじない」 (nanimo kangaenakute ii omajinai), or “a good-luck charm so you don’t have to think about anything”.
When Yuuri thinks on the ice, he trips up and loses himself, so the ring is meant to be something he can cling to, an anchor, a reassurance of the bond he has with Victor so he doesn’t have to waste time thinking out there during his routines. He can simply focus on the skating while secure in the knowledge (via the ring) that he is bound to Victor.
SO yeah, if you were confused about this bit, I hope that cleared things up!

This is the first part of the “Geass” path. (On New Game+, you’ll start from the part where you input your name.)
Subsequent bits will be explicitly labeled for which ending they lead to. :) But this bit is the same for all Geass paths. (IIRC, some of the dialogue does change after you’ve unlocked other paths… but we will see!)
