Exploring Rajasthan Like Never Before through #RajasthanDiaries

Travelling to a destination means knowing everything about the place – its culture, traditions, history, food, dance, and so much more. But, it doesn’t end there! There are so many things that still remain to be known, yet to be explored. Plus added to this is the want of every tourist to know more. So, how does one get to know? There are things that even maps, directories or brochures are unable to disseminate information on. So, what does one do? To ride on the social media wave and make the most out of it, Rajasthan Tourism came up with the idea of creating a series of video talks with eminent industry professionals through its #RajasthanDiaries initiative. The talks were planned to be covered live on all social media platforms.

#RajasthanDiaries was created with the objective of bringing tourists closer to the state through highly informative video chat series. Through this show, the Tourism Department of Rajasthan intended to showcase the finer nuances of tourism by dedicating specific topics per episodes. Having already run eight successful episodes, Rajasthan Tourism is optimistic that this web talk series is bound to have a positive impact on tourism in Rajasthan. We have put together a brief insight into each episode conducted so far.

Episode 1: Wonders of Bird Watching in Rajasthan

Bird watching is a passion for many and something that requires a lot of patience. The first episode of #RajasthanDiaries featured an insightful conversation on the art of bird watching between Mr. Manoj Kulshreshtha, Life Member, Bombay Natural History Society, and Mr. Rahul Bhatnagar, IFS (Retd.) and President, Green Peepal Society (Udaipur). The conversation delved on several interesting topics like the diversity of avian species one can spot in Rajasthan to the various bird watching circuits the state has.

Episode 2: Folk Music of Rajasthan

The second episode of the series was planned to commemorate the World Music Day and celebrated the folk music of the state. Moderated by Mr. Nishant Jain, Director, Rajasthan Tourism, the episode featured Mr. Gopal Singh, Founder, Lokayan & Rajasthan Kabir Yatra, who shared valuable information on the rich folk music of the state.

Episode 3: The Vibrant Tradition of Rajasthani Puppetry

Puppetry is a traditional form of entertainment that showcases the various folklores of the state. An episode was completely dedicated to this form of entertainment which was moderated by Dr. Manisha Arora, Additional Director, Rajasthan Tourism and featured Dr. Laique Hussain, Director, Lok Kala Mandal, who spoke about the history and customs associated with traditional puppet performances.

Episode 4: Legacy of Rajasthan in Classical Performing Arts

Another insightful episode was dedicated to the classical performing arts of the state. The session featured eminent Kathak dancers Ms Prerana Shrimali, Senior Kathak Dancer of Jaipur Gharana and Ms. Manisha Gulyani, Kathak Dancer and educator an also the Founder Secretary of Thirak India Cultural Society.

Episode 5: Haunted Tourism in Rajasthan

#RajasthanDiaries also featured a special episode on the various haunted places of Rajasthan. The session with renowned paranormal investigator – Mr. Jay Alani was organised and featured live across all social media platforms.

Episode 6: Career Opportunities in Hospitality Sector

An insightful discussion about the various career opportunities in the hospitality industry in Rajasthan was organised with Mr. Priyadarshan Lakhawat, Principal, IHM Jaipur and Mr. Anand Tripathi, Joint Director, Rajasthan Tourism.

Episode 7: Folk Music of Rajasthan with Mame Khan

Yet another episode on folk music of the state was planned but this tie it was with Mame Khan, the famous folk music maestro. He spoke about the rich music heritage of the state and how folk music has evolved over the years.

Episode 8: Understanding the Water Culture of Rajasthan

An interactive session of #RajasthanDiaries was held featuring Mr. Neeraj Doshi, Founder, Heritage Water Walks in conversation with Dr. Punita Singh, Joint Director, Rajasthan Tourism.This is just the beginning.

Learning Everything about Rajasthan’s Traditional Form of Entertainment – Kathputli!

Every place has its own history, art, culture and entertainment. As travellers, we are always looking for that one aspect of each place that stands out from the rest. When it comes to Rajasthan, there are so many things that one can recall but what stays on the top of the mind is the traditional form of entertainment of the state - Kathputli. A part of Rajasthani culture for over generations, Kathputli has found its place amongst the list of tourist favourites in the state.

Kathputli has its genesis in the words - ‘Kath’ which means wood and ‘Putli’ which means dolls or puppets. Made completely with wood and dressed up in traditional Rajasthani clothes, these puppets are controlled by skilled artisans using almost invisible strings. The puppets move with the slightest jerk to their hands, neck and shoulders. Most Kathputlis have beautiful, eye-catching make up with mesmerisingly bold eyes.

Kathputli ka Khel, as it is commonly known, has been an age-old tradition, practised by several Rajasthani tribes over time. Every festival, fair or heritage site is incomplete without the display of Kathputli ka Khel. The puppeteer takes the backseat and lets the Kathputlis steal the show in accompaniment with traditional music playing in the background.

This traditional form of art was patronised by the royals across the state to showcase their rich culture. An amalgamation of storytelling, music and art, the artists would sing laurels and narrate stories of the patrons and their ancestors mostly and sometimes of folklores of Dhola Maru, etc. using these puppets. Besides being a form of entertainment, Kathputli is also a well-known craft of the state. Almost every marketplace in Rajasthan has vibrant displays of these stringed puppets.

You can experience the Kathputli performances live in various parts of the state. Depicting local folklore characters and reflecting traditional and contemporary stories, Kathputli ka khel is a once in a lifetime experience. UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Rajasthan

Chittorgarh Fort, Chittorgarh

One of the largest forts of India, the Chittorgarh Fort was formerly the seat of the Rajput clan. The main attractions within the fort include the Vijay Stambha, the Kirti Stambha, the Rana Kumbha Palace, the Fateh Prakash Palace, Rani Padmini's Palace, Meera Temple, Kalika Mata Temple, Ratan Singh Palace and the Johar Kund. Amer Fort, Jaipur

Amer or Amber Fort, located in Jaipur, is one of the oldest forts in Rajasthan built in 1592 AD. Made with mystic pink and yellow sandstone, the magnificent complex of the fort uniquely integrates the Hindu and Mughal style of architecture which gets evident from some of its complexly crafted gateways and alleys. The fort is a fine example of the creativity and craftsmanship of the Rajput artists and architects.

Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

Situated in Jaipur, Jantar Mantar is an open-air astronomical observatory. There are 19 large structures at this observatory that were used for monitoring celestial objects by the people in the past. This uniquely designed observatory is home to the world’s largest sundial that has attracted many tourists from across the globe.

Ranthambhore Fort, Sawai Madhopur

The Forest Hill fort Ramthambhore has one of the oldest surviving structures of the palace of the Chauhan Ruler, Rao Hammir. Besides its architecture, the fort has various historic tales to share including the series of wars and conquests it has witnessed in the past.

Gagron Fort, Jhalawar

Gagron Fort qualifies to be the only hill and water fort in the state of Rajasthan. The fort offers a serene sight of the waters of Ahu and Kali Sindh rivers from three sides. This marvelous fort has also been witness to numerous battles but has stood strong till date. It still has the remains of the historic palace, magazine, barracks and stables. The presence of water bodies on all sides make it a true picturesque destination.

Jaisalmer Fort, Jaisalmer

Located in Jaisalmer, the only hill fort in a desert terrain. It is also called Sonar Quila. This place is also one of the very few ‘living forts’ in the world. Manifested by a fortified majestic wall, the fort has people still residing within. The fort stands on top of Trikuta (a triangular rock outcrop) guarding the desert scape from its 76m perch. This yellow sandstone is a marvel and garners huge attention from both national and international tourists.

Jaipur Walled City

The walled city of Jaipur is another heritage site that should definitely be on your travel wish list. The city is known for its urban city planning which has been borrowed from ancient Vedic designs. Keoladeo Ghana National Park, Bharatpur

The Keoladeo Ghana National Park is a wildlife sanctuary located at Bharatpur in eastern Rajasthan. The national park is known for its diverse flora and fauna. The wetlands at this place is home to around 365 bird species and migratory waterfowls. Not just that, the park has an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva as well.
