Just finished watching Project Hail Mary- I first wanted to watch it after seeing fanart from Tumblr. Then I went home and my dad was like "You should watch this movie"

Enjoyed it very much 10/10 would watch again.

i was just reading stuff about how phm is one of the few movies without a big romance plot or subplot, and thinking off of this, phm really represents how strong and true platonic love can be. grace ended up caring so, so much for the strongest friend he’s ever made in his life that he sacrificed his one, if not only, chance to go back home just to save him. romance never did work out for grace, as he says, but at the end of the movie he finally understands yao’s statement; “you just have to find someone to be brave for.” he learns the true strength of platonic relationships, and how groundbreaking it can really be to have someone you know and that you love and that you can count on for anything. he let rocky past the walls he’s put up in relationships all his life, and it turned out to be the greatest decision he’s ever made.

just watched phm last night with my friends and i have to give kudos to everyone involved with eva stratt’s character. typically her archetype shows up as a villain or just generally mean, but eva stratt is genuinely a good person. putting grace on the hail mary was objectively a tough choice, yes, but it is obvious just how much it hurt her, and how much she cares about grace. she’s pragmatic, but she’s not cold. she parallels grace. she sacrificed him to the mission against his will, and grace wasn’t selfless enough to sacrifice himself for the sake of humanity, arguably for the sake of the universe itself. they’re both not saints, and neither is better than the other. they represent the two ways humans respond to doom. you either commit to fighting and accept to go down swinging, or you commit to familiarity and accept going out quietly without even trying to fight. neither option is better than the other until you choose which one to adopt and find out what lies at the other end. eva stratt i love you

ALSO grace's syntax is significantly changed by the end of the book because of his shared grammar with Rocky. Its GOTTA be mutual, right? how weird do you think Rocky sounds to other Eridians when he talks to Grace?

Adrian meets Grace for the first time, and is fully prepared for the alien to talk weird, of course it will its a weird leaky space blob with only two arms, but they are NOT prepared for their mate's grammar to completely fall apart. Adrian can't even properly greet Grace because they're too busy laughing at Rocky for talking like that

Adrian and Grace are scientists that if left together too long, will experiment on each other.

They’re so naturally curious and ask questions the other had not thought of. Adrian asks Grace for tissue samples to run experiments on and Grace is thrilled to receive tissue samples in return. They make absolutely crazy advancements in molecular biology.

They also make Rocky the most stressed Eridian on the planet when he comes home to his partner and best friend sticking syringes in each other.

He never stops talking

They get back to Erid and Rocky introduces Grace and Adrian to each other

And over the first few weeks that Adrian is observing them together, they hear Grace's non-stop yapping

And they just take a moment, and then with nothing but unrestrained (slightly fond) horror, they go "Oh my god there's two of them"

I love the idea of Grace occasionally habitually slipping into Rocky’s speech patterns, but I’m even more obsessed with the idea of Rocky (who likely had to modify his own language much more heavily for Grace and his translator to understand it) occasionally slipping into his “talking-to-Grace” pidgin around other Eridians.

Like, Rocky will come home one day and be like “Adrian have good day working on Grace habitat dome, question.”

And Adrian will just go, “Yes, dear. We’ve made some good progress on the lighting adjustments. I take it you paid the aforementioned Grace a visit this afternoon?”

And Rocky, switching back to standard Eridian speech patterns and positively dripping tonal indicators for affectionate sarcasm, is left to reply “However did you guess?”

(They both lose it laughing. This happens several times a week)

Adrian and Grace are still getting used to each other, I like the idea of Rocky and Grace already having an established dynamic, one that Adrian is perfectly okay with of course but she’s still warming up to Grace themself. And unexpectedly they start to have interest in getting closer.
