title: Jedi mantra from The High Republic novels
And if I said Megamind through its three subversions of Superman shows a deeper understanding that the point of Superman is that he was loved and taught to love by good, present parents, and because of that he is able to return that love to a world even if it doesn't always accept it, and he is not corrupted by his power, than many other films either subverting or playing the superman story straight.
Megamind has three Superman subversions. One is obviously Megamind himself. He was not raised loved by the world, but rather was loved by those hated by the world. Because he was still raised with love, he does care about other people, hence his character development. But because he didn't receive wider love growing up, his own is misplaced at first.
Metro Man was not loved growing up in a way that mattered. His adopted father was clearly very absent, and while we don't know much about his family, their relationship seems superficial. Because of this, his sense of duty to the world is also superficial, hence his boredom.
Hal wasn't raised with power. He gained it and was shown how to use it by a 'space dad' who only taught him power and not love. Hence, he sees it only as a grasping means to an end.
All three of these subversions, in their negative space, create the silhouette of the superhero that they are parodying. That silhouette is of a space child that came to earth and was cared for very deeply by the world, and taught love through his experience of love, and because of that holds fast to his duty to the world. Which is Superman.
Eva and Grace’s dynamic is so important to me. They’re in love platonically. Like, that’s not a common dynamic. She put the way he likes his coffee into the ship’s computer. He follows her around like a puppy. In the book, she cracks jokes with him and him only. She cares about his opinion. He was the only one she asked about the coma gene, wondering if it was worth it.
He’s her best friend, and she doesn’t even know it. They’re so close, that in the book, people think they’re sleeping together, and poor Grace is so confused because he thought that was his platonic work wife, wdym people think we’re sleeping together, that’s my person that I crack jokes with and then she glares at me because they’re not funny.
She’s softer with him than anybody else and is only ever vulnerable around him. We see in the movie, he’s the only one who ever gets her to smile, and sometimes even laugh, and then she serenades all of them, but mainly him, and he stares at her with those big, shiny eyes so lovingly, and she points at him when she sings, “everything’s gonna be alright”, and then she gives him those eyes, so loving.
And then she’s trying to stop herself from crying when she’s sending him away because, against her will, he’s become her person, and somewhere along the way, she’s become his, and they will have forever ended this relationship on bad terms, and nothing can fix that.
It’s a platonic tragedy. It’s a platonic love story. This is something we don’t get often, or, like, ever, and it’s deep and it’s tragic and it’s sad.
But even after, Eva’s still taking care of him. Packing clothes she knew would bring him comfort. Programming the ship to know how he likes his coffee. And Grace is still watching out for her, speaking to her directly in his video logs, with that same lopsided smile he used to throw her way.
He uses Rocky’s sign for goodbye, and she uses it back, and how did this book and movie give us such a deep platonic friendship because, guys, this NEVER HAPPENS.
Eva and Grace, the platonic male/female friendship of all time.
Tangled au where 12/13 year old Rapunzel gets mad at Mother Gothel and in a fit of teen rebellion cuts her hair and that kills her, so the now orphan Rapunzel leaves the tower and stumbles into the Snuggly Ducking and is effectively adopted by the thugs. She works there as a barmaid and every year a couple of them take her to the outskirts on the kingdom to see the lanterns.
She isn’t found out to be the lost princess until
A) she goes into the kingdom to bail out one of regulars
Or B) after stealing the crown, Eugene, heads to the pub to keep low only to have a heart attack bc wtf is that the queen???
#this spawned a thoughts in my brain wherein Flynn gets caught &sentenced to death as in canon #and rapunzel decides to go big (and unknowingly) go home and shows up to save him by pulling the Anastasia Con 'i'm the lost princess!' #and as soon as she has secured his release is like OKAY HOW DO WE DO THIS #and he's like do what???? the lost princess con is a game! no one wants the risk of actually trying it! #and didn't you say it would be mean to do that to the king and queen?? #'that was before they tried to have you killed though? so lets figure it out fast! '#anyway they sit down to hash out Her Story and Flynn puts the timeline together and goes uhhhhh I think you might actually be her actually? #the orphanage didn't teach much math but he's been a thief long enough to know 2 plus 2 is 4. star wolves series on ao3 (no allydia yet, i fear)
This is a Star Wars fusion AU set several years after Revenge of the Sith. The pack are just kids when the Jedi Purge and the rise of the Galactic Empire changes the shape of the galaxy forever.
The Argent family has thrived under this new order. Gerard Argent made a name for himself as an elite Jedi hunter following the Purge, and as a reward for his hard work, has been appointed Governor of Calafor. His granddaughter, Alisen, is on the fast-track to joining the rest of her family in the Imperial ranks. The Mar'tens were nobility on a neutral planet during the Clone Wars, but now that the war is over, they're smart enough to follow along with the base of power in the galaxy. That includes moving to Calafor when their daughter, Lydia, is recruited to the Imperial Youth Training Program.
Roommates in their program at CIYTC, Alisen and Lydia quickly become the closest of friends. They're both brilliant, skilled, and ambitious, so it's no surprise that they're a hell of a power duo. Everyone expects them to become incredibly successful Imperial officers. That is, until Scott Delgado joins their program and changes everything they think they know about the Empire, the Force, and themselves.
Lydia learns that her dreams are more than just dreams, and in a galaxy dead-set against allowing anyone with the Force to survive, uncovering her true capabilities is terrifying. And Alisen must confront the truth of her family's legacy, deciding for herself whether following in their footsteps is worth losing her two closest friends.
