I went to this school for my first 2 years of college and I can wholeheartedly say that it was one of the worst academic choices I had ever made. I know this is nothing new for American universities, especially large ones like this who have a big football following, but attending LSU was really jarring for me, especially since I was under the impression that bigger school = better facilities.
When I was there (around 2011-2013) they were doing lots of construction, much of it centered around a new Barnes and Noble built on campus. Mind you, it had books (for leisure and overpriced textbooks), but the entire bottom floor was just… overpriced football/college fan merch. Rarely, if ever, did I see them working on some of the older buildings that had A/C or plumbing issues, and if they were doing so, they weren’t investing nearly as much as they did for sports and fan merch.
The entire campus would turn into some kind of massive party prior to a game, so if you wanted to head to the library to study you had to schedule it around that or get yourself a study room there… but good luck getting any of your groupmates to show up because they’d rather be watching people throw a ball than doing what they are literally attending school for.
People ask me why I hate college sports so much and shit like this is why. This and the not-so-subtle favors given to sports players in terms of being allowed into easy electives so that they can maintain GPAs and sometimes just being handed the grade they need to pass so they can remain on the team. The only good thing I got out of my experience at LSU were the transferable credits, everything else just took a toll on my mental health.
