I like reading DE fanfic but imo the characterization of Harry and Kim is like several steps away from canon in the majority of fics. There is a dynamic that writers tend to favor that is Harry as expressive, clingy, does dumb and impulsive things for the sake of it and Kim the stoic, patient, empathetic minimalist.

And in canon Harry pretty explicitly struggles to form regular facial expressions while Kim has to put substantial effort into controlling his. Harry can choose to go off without Kim or attempt to drive him away while Kim will very rarely leave him alone. Kim is also almost always the one to initiate physical contact between them. Harry typically has some sort of internal reasoning behind his actions, even if they seem nonsensical to an onlooker, but Kim will often do things or agree to plans just because it amuses him.

The biggest thing that bothers me is that in fics Kim often takes on a role of a sort of mediator, settling disagreements, deescalating situations, clearing up misunderstandings. I think that in many ways, that’s the kind of person that he aspires to be, but canonically he has pretty fucking awful people skills. He can barely have a conversation without putting on the role of Cop. I think that one of the main things he admires about Harry is his ability to read people and connect with them.

Idk man. Let Kim be a socially awkward dork and let Harry have more depth than a golden retriever archetype

Yea! Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only touch you can initiate with Harry is violent. ie punching Cuno or (kicking/punching) Measurehead. You can fly into Lena’s chair and knock yourself out, pick a fight with Titus, punch Klassje’s door and threaten her, try to tackle Ruby and have it end in her suicide and force yourself on Dolores Dei.

We (the player, Harry) aren’t even conscious to see who drags Harry inside the Whirling and administers first aid.

The closest thing to touch you can initiate with Harry is giving Acele your hat, and patting inanimate objects like the mailbox.

EXCEPT. For when Kim makes you accept the touch of Lamby’s soft fur from a child. I don’t think you can even hold hands with the fisherwoman on your “date”.

In all cases, the touch is innocent (accepting touch from or taking care of children) and devoid of ulterior motive, and the threat of adult touch. It can also be argued that there is the idle animation where Harry lets Cuno ride on his shoulders. They are safe & quiet moments in time where Harry gets to make a genuine emotional connection with others.

Harry is compassionate (a vast soul) that makes him think about inanimate objects, ravers in a church and stop to wonder about the story behind bullet holes in a wall - but it doesn’t overflow onto other people. If it overflows, it does so inwards. The only way he knows how to deal with the sadness is self-destruction. It never overflows outwards as touch to other people.

And who touches Harry? Only one person that he really, REALLY trusts. For all that Harry doesn’t initiate a single touch with him, Kim is constantly using his body to provide comfort where he cannot. Patting Harry on the shoulder to console him, to comfort him when he is sick or crying. Dragging him back to the Kineema and giving him water when Harry passed out after opening the Damaged Ledge. An ace’s high (and an ace’s low!) Neither Harry’s lazareth nor his colleagues come to him after the Tribunal, Kim says that he was the one to patch Harry up. A hand on Harry’s shoulder when he says “I see it too.” Kim’s touches provide grounding, comfort and camaraderie in Harry’s highest (and lowest) moments.

At the very very end of the game the only other person to initiate touch is Jean, as he helps Harry to their car.

Harry absolutely does not hang off people, he isn’t a golden retriever man and he isn’t free with his hugs or his touch EXCEPT with children (in a safe environment) and when he is Sorry cop, the people around him get pretty tired of his routine pretty quickly and don’t tolerate it for long. It will quickly alienate those who knew him pre-Martainaise (like Sylvie) and exasperate those that know him post-Martainiase (like Kim).

Compared to Harry who woke up with one shoe and a noose necktie, Kim is a very precise man because he has to be and is under constant scrutiny (racism from colleagues and anti-cop sentiment from public). He would rather look at his mnemonic notebook than at a grieving wife, and is far too quick to draw his gun for a cop (if you watch him during tense moments it is incredible how many times he lays his hand on it during tense scenes) - but he loves to banter; Harry often can hear the smile in his voice. He tries to shield Harry from the knowledge of the Pale for as long as he can - out of compassion and fear for how vulnerable Harry is. Kim can easily comfort someone he values after a very short period of time using his touch, his words (both stern and soft) and knowing when someone just needs company and patience, like the whistling on the swings.

Agree with a previous tag that Harry has a complicated relationship with touch (haven’t even gone into the half-light check with Klassje here), and also that Kim is far less emotionally stunted than he is made out to be.
