The main reason I’m pushing for people to stop using the term ‘pedophile’ and instead use the term ‘child sexual abusers’, is because since all discussions of child sexual abuse focus on this idea of an evil person who is just out to get kids because they are sexual attracted to them, it makes it hard for kids who where sexually assaulted by people who don’t fit that description to realize they were sexually assaulted.

It didn’t register for me until recently that my experiences of being forced to strip naked multiple times at the mental hospital to be ‘checked’ when I was 14 was sexual assault, because the people who did it were nurses/doctors who clearly didn’t find me sexually attractive but instead used it as a form of humiliation and control towards children they deemed as ‘unruly’ and ‘uncooperative’ (ie. children who asked to be treated like people). I thought only people who fit into this idea of a child attracted pedo could be child sexual abusers, so I thought my experience didn’t count.

Stepping away from the idea that there is a pedophile boggieman and instead highlighting that anyone can be a child sexual abuser will help more people realize that their experiences are sexual assault.

my stepfather would openly sexually harass me and my siblings at dinner while also loving the fantasy of killing pedophiles. whether he personally found our abuse sexually gratifying was frankly irrelevant to whether it traumatized us. whether he would be considered a pedophile or not doesn't change that he committed sexual abuse of children

I think in his mind there was a type of horrible person out there who does horrible things, and because he didn't think of himself as fitting that category, his actions could not be judged

unfortunately i am starting to suspect indeed that if the moral panic about ai among the "left" and liberals cannot be overcome then much of the near future is being ceded, both in terms of the capabilities of individuals/collectives/organizations and culturally - with the main big cultural coalitions left willing to adapt being like, totalitarian sillicon valley aligned technocrats who are rabidly carceralist and anti-homeless standing in for the "most progressive", and then there are the fascists

i think the AI moral panic will fall apart in the next 5-10 years regardless of what the "left" and liberals attempt tbh. there are kids right now growing up in a world where AI already existed when they were 13, it's normal to them. in 2031-2036 they will be 18-23 years old and a significant political force, so the moral panic will recede to the current "mobile phone moral panic", a niche narrative sold only to boomers.

but that's still "the near future" i suppose. liberals and "leftists" will be ceding a lot of ground during that time. it's imperative that serious revolutionary movements fill up this coming vacuum, not fascists.

The problem here is that AI is one of the most existential threats the proletariat has ever faced. This isn't just a case where Phone Bad, because if low quality content was the only issue it would be Just Fine. No, we're talking about technology that even the bourgeoisie men most involved in its development are admitting will cauae unemployment to skyrocket as it decimates entire industries; Just search and many of them give estimates of upwards of 30% unemployment, and the bourgeoisie is the only class that will benefit from the productivity gains.

Really, the only silver lining for kids growing up surrounded by AI is that maybe by the time they grow up, the economy will have restructured and there will still be nough jobs for them to earn a decent living from. That's an extreme and wildly optimistic best case scenario though. Capitalismbdoesn't have a solid track record of being Rational in response to new developments in production or having workers' best interests in mind as it marches forward.

AI is not an existential threat to the proletariat! certainly not more than the creation of the internet. this is a landscape-changing technology but to ascribe apocalyptic power to it is to buy fully into the tech industry's exaggerations. "even the bourgeoisie involved in developing AI admits AI will replace so many jobs unemployment will skyrocket" well yes, that's because it's in their interests to claim AI is so good it will replace so many jobs unemployment will skyrocket.

the periphery proletariat has already faced conditions much worse than what AI threatens to inflict on the imperial core proletariat. there's no point to lamenting and fearing some catastrophe to come- yes, this is a great upheaval, but like all great upheavals, it is also the ideal opportunity if we play our cards right. the ball is in our court.
