“Yes, the Reign of Terror...was that one of ours or one of yours?”
“Can’t recall. We had crêpes!”
Okay okay okay I know Crowley and Aziraphale are oblivious and caught up in their own business and miss a lot of things that humans are doing, but this particular historical factoid? Do I really believe that they truly forgot the simple but important detail that neither of them was responsible for the Reign of Terror?
Because while they were there, in the thick of it, Crowley was actively denying responsibility for the Reign of Terror while Aziraphale was making half-hearted accusations. And they still remember details about who was responsible for other major world events decades or centuries after they happened; eleven years later, Aziraphale will point out that Crowley had falsified his reports, taking credit for the Spanish Inquisition and starting the Second World War. Both in France during the Reign of Terror and with regards to the Spanish Inquisition and the Second World War, Crowley points out that humans alone are to blame for these events. Pointing out the self-destructive tendencies of humans is kind of his thing.
I don’t think that Crowley and Aziraphale both entirely forgot that neither “side” was responsible for the Reign of Terror. This is a significant moment of doublespeak.
What exactly is being said, I’m less confident about, and want to think on some more. However, I can’t resist posting some initial thoughts:
“Let’s have lunch. I still owe you from…” -> “Alright, I can see how uncomfortable you are. Let’s just do friendship things. You did say we could do that, and now that the world is ending, our time is limited.”
“Paris. 1793.” -> “I’m still not ready to talk about 1967, but I do want to spend time with you. What about one of our most fun moments together, when you rescued me? That incident in Paris in 1793 was nice.”
“Yes. The Reign of Terror. Was that one of ours or one of yours?” -> “But that was my favor, not your favor. I rescued you from the Bastille, and then you took me to lunch. We were even. I don’t owe you for anything that happened during the Reign of Terror.”
“Can’t recall. We had crêpes!” -> “I’m not actually keeping track of debts and favors anymore. We both know it’s just an act we keep up so we can stay together under Heaven and Hell’s radar. I want to spend time together and I want you to do me the same favor you did back then.”
One could suggest that they genuinely don’t remember anything but each other about a lot of major historical periods, which is incredibly cute and may very well be true, but I’m not sure I see evidence for that elsewhere. I do, however, see evidence for doublespeak all over the place.
I absolutely agree with this double-speak headcanon, but there’s another possibility.
Crowley remembers getting credit for the French Revolution, but not actually who’s it was. Which might suggest Aziraphale also sometimes gets credit for things.
In this case, Aziraphale may have returned to London to find a piece of Heavenly stationary congratulating him for his work on helping to re-establish order in this time of chaos in France; or perhaps noting his support of the working-class rising up against an oppressive monarchy; or more confusingly, both.
I like to think both Heaven and Hell happily take…not quite credit for human achievements, the way Crowley does, but there’s a big score chart somewhere and major historical events or figures count as a “point” for one side or the other. A general rise of Heavenly or Hellish influence. So “one of ours” can broadly mean either something they inspired, or something they claimed after the fact, when the results are more clear.
Given the way results tend to change over time, it’s possible certain events get tossed back and forth like a hot potato. “Ooh, lots of death, claiming this for Hell. No wait, looks like it’s becoming a more socially equal society, this goes to Heaven. Whoops, nope, it’s an empire again, back to Hell. Alright the whole thing fell apart except for…the metric system? Who wants to claim the metric system?” And that’s where Crowley and Aziraphale lose track.
Well, maybe there is something to be said for shades of grey.
what gets me is crowley didn’t know about the polaroid. he thought it would be his last night on earth. but it wasn’t, thanks to aziraphale. and the next day, after their candlelight dinner, he went back to the church and bought this statue from the people cleaning the rubble. he thought it would be his last night on earth but it turned out to be the very beginning of a new chapter for them. and he took a souvenir. just like he took agnes nutter’s book from the burning bookshop when he thought that their lives had changed again. makes me think what souvenir he might have taken at the end of season 2, seeing how it’s maybe the biggest turning point for him yet.
@glassiskies i can’t let this hide in the replies. CROWLEY DIDN‘T EVEN QUESTION IT! The little demon was just like „Well, they gave me one more night. Of course, I will spend it here, with you, in the bookshop, that is heaven‘s embassy. We will share a fine wine and lament about or lives. And I will tell you that I trusted you by your word alone.“
Crowley wouldn’t have known when they were going to see each other again, or even if ever. Because this time it wasn’t him just doing some good, he was actively caught fraternising with the enemy and Hell doesn’t send rude notes.
So he must’ve not only been stressed, but scared. And he didn’t have a plan, didn’t try to fight. Just accepted it because at least he got one more night with his angel.
