What Hip Hop Means To Me/Highest Visions/KRS-One/Media Machine/The Next Generation & More....
These are some posts I posted on a Hip Hop community I'm a member of, contray to a lot of places like these the people here regularly have civil and interesting debates, so thought it would be interesting to share.
The question what Hip Hop Is/Means To You was posed....
Hip Hop means so much to me it is hard to even put into words, I wrote an article on it the other day, but off the top to me it's a culture and way of life that is highly positive and productive in my life, what attracted me to Hip Hop was the unrestricted expression, to be able to say whatever you want and going through a traumatic life writing lyrics was exetremly therautic and working and helping nuture the talented artists on my label has been a great joy for me and it's incredible seeing them develop, some people I signed as young as 12-14 and helped nuture them from then, one of the ones I heard at 12 and signed at 14 is now 20, I started my label (Raskil Records) when I was just 14 and registered the company when I was 17, I am 22 now and we have been progressing excellently. We started from absoloutly nothing, we had no money, no equiptment, no artists apart from my close friend Sion De Freitas and then we just starting building now we are deep and have made a lot of movements and have an indescrible drive and passion to continue to progress, and not just for worldly gain, we want to be able to give back to Hip Hop as it has given us so much, my friend Sion when he was just 3 years old was partially deaf and mute and Hip Hop helped him regain his speech and he is now an artist, funnily enough he has also has an extensive vocabularly and talks perfectly, so we want to help enhance Hip Hop's culture and offer great music and inspire, educate and give people something to relate to with what we do, Hip Hop is also an avenue where you can make a genuine difference to people's lives, some of our music has sincerly touched people to make them cry, or helped them get through diffiuclt times and that is a huge honor when you hear or see things like that, it makes all the struggle worth it. And I related to the part about bringing people together, my label is like a family, some of the people have been here for 8 years, some 5, some 4, we plan to always stick together and the foundation of the label nobody could tear apart, we wouldn't betray eachother for all the money in the world, we want to respect what we believe are our principles and the Hip Hop's foundation principles. And we're down to unfiy and help people, we believe there is room for all the real artists cause we are all going to be offering something different so want to see good people with talent succeed. That's really just a summary as Hip Hop's meaning to me is impossible to put into words, but it is basically my life and I will always remain loyal to the culture.
Then was asked the highest vision that you could see yourself with what you do....
I see my label releasing classic music, albums and mixtapes, working with legends and helping construct the future of Hip Hop and giving Hip Hop lovers amazing music to listen to and artists that have the right personality and ability opportunities, not being solely money orientated but also being truely down for the culture. I see some of my artists amoung some of the previous Hip Hop greats and when we hopefully acheieve our goals we are the type of people that would be the same, keep it real, we'd still lend our talents and anything we get from that success to the community and help enhance it.... this is a limitless question.
Then it went on to KRS One and the media machine...
And in regards to KRS, he is a very inspirational figure to me, I watch a lot of his lectures and have read some of his books, he is a deep brother and someone who certinaly cares about Hip Hop and devotes his life to it, I respect that, plus he's still dropping fire, I'm looking foward to the new album with Premier. And I believe we all have to come together for Hip Hop right now to preserve and enhance this culture for now and future generations, I'm ready to start contributing in a big way, and regarding the media machine, I think one thing we need to gain is our own avenue of promotion, our own Hip Hop radio station/TV channel etc etc etc, then WE (Hip Hop) can dictate rather than let the corrupt dictate what WE listen too, people need and want an alternative.
Then on selling out....
I feel artists can be true to themselves and still be successful, it's just a matter of balance in my opinion, some people seem to be TOO obsessed with JUST being overly lyrical to impress the underground, sometimes it can be a positive thing but it can also have the reverse effect if it limits them, some of the most popular and successful artists have been those that are able to convey their own personal struggle and make the listeners care about them aswel as be impressed by their skill, for instance, Big Pun could amaze you with his lyrical ability but he could also speak about his personal life in Punish Me, or speak on Hip Hop being targeted in Parental Discretion, and get in touch with the fly player side of his personality on I'm Not A Playa, but he still delivered it excellently and didn't sell out, it's just he was a diverse individual so expressed the various layers to his personality with different topics instead of just focussing on one thing.
And some of the artists I'm feeling from the "next generation"...
New relativly speaking, I like Blu & Exile's album, I think Lowkey has a lot of talent, he recently did a dope track with Immortal Technique, I'm not sure how long Brother Ali has been in the game but I respect what he does, he's made some great songs, my artist Kontext recently dropped an excellent mixtape called I Am Legend Vol 1, I will try drop something from that soon for people to peep, I know Saigon and Papoose aren't really that new, but in terms of releases (albums) they are and I think they got ability, I think Jay Z might look like sign Saigon at some point to Roc Nation, Slaughterhouse I think are a dope collective, I liked their album, Last Emperor I think is incredible, again I know he isn't new but he's only dropped one official album I think, I'm waiting on the next one, I think J Cole is good from what I've heard so far, but the future will be bright, some of the best future artists probably aren't that widely known yet and will come to light at some point.
