One of the most useful things I’ve learned about recovering from trauma is that my decisions need to be judged according to the incomplete information that was available to me at the time.
So, say I’m deciding whether to eat chicken at a restaurant. All evidence is that it’s a good idea. I’m hungry for chicken, and I usually feel good after eating it.
I eat the chicken, and I get food poisoning. The resulting illness causes me to fall short of responsibilities, and creates numerous problems for me and the people who depend on me.
What happened?
Trauma brain says: “This happened because I am Bad At Making Decisions. If I had made The Right Decision and not eaten chicken, everything would have been fine.”
Recovery brain says, “According to the information that was available to me, the chicken was unlikely to make me sick. Eating chicken was a Good Decision with Bad Consequences. This happened to me because I had incomplete information.”
The “trauma brain” response makes all decisions really hard, because each decision involves the prospect of being judged by a future self that has more information.
“Should I buy the $2 mouse pad or the $3 mouse pad? If I buy the cheaper one and it doesn’t work well, it will be my own fault for not buying a better quality one…”
(Then I might end up paying myself $1-per-hour to agonize over which mouse pad to buy, which is probably an ACTUAL unwise course of action.)
But if I foster the “recovery brain” response, I can start to trust that my future self will judge my decisions kindly.
“If I buy the cheap mouse pad and it doesn’t work, then I only gambled $2 on it. If I buy the $3 one and even it doesn’t work, then I’ll have more closely guessed how much I need to pay for a mousepad of sufficient quality.”
And then later when the mousepad doesn’t work: “Well, that didn’t work. At least I made a decision. The outcome has given me more information about the options available to me going forward.”
(Meta level: Decisions you made prior to reading this post about how to treat yourself were probably good given the information you had access to about trauma and recovery!)
tl;dr: Bad results are not always evidence of bad decisions. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt about why you do what you do.
This. Sometimes nothing you chose at the time, or what you chose based on the info you had isn't the right answer but you didn't know the question
Just had an awesome experience @starbucks @thebrocktonbux They double checked ingredients lists for my sister with a dairy allergy, washed equipment before making her drink and remade my drink when it was wrong. And everyone we interacted with was very friendly. But above all super thank you for taking my sister's allergy seriously. #allergies #chaitealatte #dairyallergy https://www.instagram.com/p/CRj5ooAjBrk/?utm_medium=tumblr

a WLW makeup ad. 👩❤️💋👩
Makeup ad?! This is a whole movie.
“And they were reincarnated soulmates!”
“Oh my god, they were reincarnated soulmates!!”
@fell-reverie !!!! O.O <3_<3
I really want to meet whoever was able to sell the makeup company on this idea, because if they can get money for this much lavish period dress and sapphic innuendo for a four-minute commercial in China, then they can probably sell anything to anyone
Only 4 pins stood the test of time xD Anyone else recognize what this is? :P #girlscouts #swaps #camp https://www.instagram.com/p/CRO0Kb1D5P8/?utm_medium=tumblr
COLUMBO (1989) —8.04 Grand Deceptions
Columbo really did love that dog. All dogs, actually. Like there's an episode where the victim had a puppy and when they find the poor puppy whining because he didn't have food or water, Columbo kinda loses it.

More people without masks than I was really comfortable with, but at least the restaurant had outdoor dining, and it was fun to hang out with (vaccinated) friends. ^^ #dollphotography #bjdphoto #bjd #RhiannonYamamoto #volkslillie #fireworks https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ-DnELD6K2/?utm_medium=tumblr
“People cannot feel safe just because they had the two doses” in areas where community transmission is high, one official said.
And in other news, keep wearing those masks, y’all.
New variants are 0% contagious to people who have been fully vaccinated, I’ve heard...

Literally anyone who’s read the results of any other time this experiment has been tried. Why are we still trying to prove the concept?
Here’s the link if anyone wants it!
https://www.newscientist.com/article/2242937-universal-basic-income-seems-to-improve-employment-and-well-being/
Finland’s two-year test of universal basic income has concluded that it doesn't seem to disincentivise working, and improves recipients’ men
We’re still trying to prove the concept because in the West, Big Business and their owners, The 1%, are screaming at the thought of having to give up a little money so everyone can get universal income that supports life - meaning jobs either have to pay you to put up with the literal shit or people can walk away from them without becoming homeless.
Our entire system is basically based on people being so afraid of homelessness and starvation that they’ll accept any shit job for shit pay.
Past experiments have shown that UBI:
Increases high school graduation rates
Reduces:
Domestic violence
Alcoholism
Emergency room visits related to mental health
Road traffic accidents.
All while not disincentivizing employment for most groups (the exceptions being high school students, who were able to focus on their studies, and new mothers…who were using it as maternity leave!)
People, for the most part, want to work.
UBI would allow us to expand the definition of “work.” If somebody can live off of UBI, then they can devote themselves to things which we don’t currently value financially such as the arts, raising children well, etc.
And if somebody wants to stay home and play video games all day…then so be it. Not that many will.,..and of those who do most will probably find some way to make that into their “work,” whether by providing play throughs and tutorials or competing seriously.
If somebody stops working all together as soon as they get UBI and stays home to play video games, they probably desperately needed a break.
There are so many people who are struggling with mental and physical illnesses, and chronic pain, who are still breaking themselves working because they don’t have another option - because it can take years to get on disability, and it’s not enough to survive on, so people keep going as long as they possibly can.
Even if it’s not a matter of disability, as such … people get burned out?
We’re not really built to do school and work with minimal breaks to the extent that we do.
Despite what our puritanical culture says, there’s no shame in needing a break.
The reason we don’t have UBI is not because it costs too much money like they say it’s because it would take away the leverage businesses have over their employees (starvation and death)
UBI would also increase art/culture of a country as well? Especially in the modern era where it’s easier to become an independent artist than it ever has been? Like if we had UBI here in the US, I’d probably quit my day job, and focus on my music and directing career. Live off the basics but I wouldn’t have to worry about constantly needing another 1099 contract set up, or I could spend my days rehearsing and practicing instead of needing to go to work to pay rent, and then being too emotionally exhausted to actually better my art.
I know I’m not the only artist in this position either. UBI would allow musicians, writers, actors, painters, even cosplayers or independent video game designers to focus on their craft, get better at it, and be able to live without a concern about the inconsistency that is “gig work”
