IDE 2025 Summer Exhibition
The Innovation Design Engineering MA/MSc Summer Exhibition 2025 celebrated the achievements of this year’s graduates, showcasing projects that push the boundaries of design and engineering.
Cyber Physical Systems – IDE 2024
Watch creativity and engineering come together in our latest showcase. Explore inspiring projects from the Cyber Physical Systems course! 25 teams from our joint Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) program with the Royal College of Art, plus international guests from Pratt Institute (New York) and Keio University (Tokyo), came together to create interactive machines that respond dynamically using computer vision and machine learning – all within an intense six-week period.
Cyber Physical Systems - IDE-GID 2023
We are excited to share the latest video showcase of projects from the iconic Cyber Physical Systems module taken by 92 students organised into 29 teams, from our joint post-graduate programmes with the Royal College of Art: Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) and visitors from our partner institutions, Pratt in New York, NTU in Singapore, Keio University in Tokyo and Tsinghua in Beijing as part of Global Innovation Design (GID).

IDE Overcooked - IDE 2 Teambuilding
Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) is a leading-edge, creative product development double Master's programme run jointly between the Royal College of Art (RCA) and the Dyson School of Design Engineering, which offers a double Master's degree: MA (RCA) and MSc (Imperial). It involves experimentation, design, engineering, and enterprise activities with an emphasis on prototyping and proving propositions.
The Polyfloss Factory - The plastic cotton-candy machine
Polyfloss - an startup originated from IDE some years ago, presents its latest machine! 🔧 The Polyfloss Factory machine recycles plastic waste into fibers, with a process inspired by cotton-candy. Our latest machine is designed to be easily transported and used anywhere : it stands on a standard pallet, uses regular 220V and 4.5kW consumption, can process 10kg/h and weighs 120kg. Waste becomes a new resource, which can be used as a filling material, insulation, but also for textile applications, or molded to obtain a lightweight rigid material to replace Expanded Polystyrene.
A day in the life of a Master's student at Imperial College London/Royal College of Art
Join Ifeoluwa as she takes you on a typical day as an Innovation Design Engineering student. The MA/ MSc Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) programme is a unique double Master’s Programme that has been run jointly with the Royal College of Art for 40 years.
BlueNose - Terra Carta Design Lab winner 2024 | Royal College of Art
Ninety per cent of cargo goods are carried by sea and the maritime sector is responsible for 3% of global CO2 emissions, making it one of the world’s most concentrated sources of pollution. BlueNose develops solutions to improve the aerodynamics of merchant navy vessels, particularly container ships, in order to reduce their fuel consumption by up to 5%. This is done by generating structures that are developed using an in-house algorithm that generates optimised, custom shapes based on the operational conditions of the targeted ships.
Pyri - Terra Carta Design Lab winner 2024 | Royal College of Art
Wildfires destroy ecosystems, harm human health, and release emissions that exacerbate climate change in a compounding cycle. By the end of the century, extreme wildfires are predicted to increase by 50%, with the most significant increases in the Arctic and tropical forests (UN Environment Programme, 2022). Pyri is an innovative, low-cost wildfire detection system designed with remote, unprepared, and vulnerable communities in mind.

IDE Symposium: Sparks will Fly
The Design Engineering Summer Show 2020 presents to you our mid-week lunchtime symposium: Sparks will Fly. Today our hosts Prof. Peter Childs and Prof. Nick Munro are joined by a panel of alumni and design engineering experts who will discuss the merits and potential of graduate projects. The panel discussion is guided by our Question of the Day: When society, the environment, and the economy are desperate for new solutions, what will make a difference?
