“petunia dragged us out of the store before we could even check out, our full trolley just sitting abandoned in an aisle. we get all the way back home & her fiance is standing absolutely starkers in the backyard, spatula in his hand and burgers lying all over the grass, and he looks petunia dead in the eye and goes ‘i can explain.’ and she’s still marrying him! can you believe it?” lily wrapped up her story she was telling to her rather captivated audience of one as they made their way down the corridor. she could hardly blame them for being entranced, really. when she told these stories about her summers with petunia, she felt a bit like she was recapping a muggle soap opera. they were absolutely real stories, however unfortunate it was that lily had to live through it. she was just happy to be back at hogwarts, where telling these stories felt like her former life–especially since after this year, she was very much planning to not go back to cokeworth, joining the order instead. regardless of how much of a terror petunia had been all summer with wedding planning, lily couldn’t deny it was a funny story now that she was saying in out loud, allowing herself to laugh a little at the sheer absurdity of it.
“he sounds like a tosser. but then again, i’ve been saying that for how long now?” marlene said as she hooked arms with lily, looking back towards the halls as they walked the familiar path now crawling with lost first years to their house. there was a strange sense that had been settling inside of marlene’s chest since boarding the train earlier that morning. it was their final year, their final time getting on at king’s cross.. it was their last few months before fully being exposed to the darkness that laid beyond the castle’s wards and marlene was itching to get out there. to be in the thick of it. and yet, walking here, arm in arm with lily was enough to make her wish they were one of those terrified first years, running around trying to find the nearest prefect. “you actually think that marriage is going to work? not to sound awful, lils, but the both of them don’t seem like they’re in it for the love. if i were ever gonna get married, i better love the bloody hell outta whoever it is. right?”
