Winter Break
Winter Vacation is right around the corner! I know that I am excited for my family's trip to San Antonio over the coming weeks! Please post were you are headed for the break, and what your plans are for wherever you are going.

Cartesian Diver (Dec. 8, 2011)
Cartesian Diver (Dec. 8, 2011)
Materials:
Soda bottle (empty)
Bendy straw
Rubber band 5 paper clips
Soda bottle:
Diameter=17
Radius=8.5
How to make:
Bend the straw on the top where the openings are even
Tie sides together with the rubber band, but make the holes have air
Attach the 5 paper clips to the rubber band
Test the diver in a little bit of water, and make sure it stands
If that works, full up the soda bottle full, drop the diver in, and close it shut
Shake the bottle to add pressure
If you have successfully completed the experiment, when you push on the sides of the bottle, the diver should go down, and when it's left alone it will float back up
Results:
If all goes well, squeezing the bottle will force the diver to dive, and no pressure will make the diver shoot up
Here is a JPEG of the notes if anyone would like to download them:

Do you think Akiba/Ace is like this?
“NO PLACE FOR HATE WEEK”
(from the email) We are very excited about being a No Place for Hate school through the ADL this year. The No Place for Hate is an initiative developed by the Anti-Defamation League to provide a model for combating intolerance, bullying and hatred. The program provides a unique opportunity to incorporate new and existing programs with one consistent message and connects Akiba to a larger initiative taking place in the region and in other cities across the nation. As part of the program, every K-8 student has signed a Resolution of Respect. A voluntary committee of approximately 15, 5th-8th grade students has been hard at work planning a No Place for Hate Week at Akiba. This will take place next week, Dec 5th -9th. The goal of the week is for every student to learn more about this important initiative and to learn the importance of acceptance! Everyone in grades K-8 will be involved in so the more you participate the stronger the message will be and the greater the effects for creating a “NO PLACE FOR HATE” school will be! Each day will have a specific dress code and a brief guided activity that will go along with the theme of the day. Here is the schedule: Monday: Hi-5 Day: Learning the importance of kind words Dress Code: School uniform Tuesday: Crazy Sock Day: Learning to laugh with someone vs. at someone Dress Code: School uniform with “crazy” socks Wednesday: Unity Day (National Bullying Prevention Center): What are your true colors when it comes to bullying? ORANGE is our message of support to students who have experienced bullying. Unite against bullying! Dress Code: Add orange to your school uniform Thursday: Mix it up at lunch day (www.mixitup.org) Dress Code: School uniform with mixed up shoes and/or accessories. Friday: Be Your Unique Self day: Come ready to be proud of who you are! Dress Code: Students wear own clothes with spirit day. Please adhere to school dress code rules. Please contact Heather Behr for any questions about this week's hate-less events!
