7 study tips from someone who rides the struggle bus to school everyday
Because I struggle bussed too hard to come up with a solid 10. Regardless, I made it this far, so I must have done something right(ish), or not completely wrong.Â
Set the scene. Not necessarily in the Tumblr studying aesthetic kinda way. Theyâre definitely #deskgoals, but let me tell you, my desk never looked like any of the pictures you see here. What I mean, make your space a productive place to study for you. I preferred my study space to be separate from my sleep place, so my desk wasnât in my bedroom. Not being locked up in a cave was important to me, so I put my desk by a window. Light a candle, Bath and Body Works got all my loan money. Get a natural sunlight lamp. Play some music, preferably without lyrics â classical, EDM, whatever keeps you focused without being distracting. Just make an optimal space for you.Â
Stay hydrated (and caffeinated). Iâm 100% a coffee addict, but water is so incredibly important. It helps you to not feel like shit, both physically and mentally, or look like shit #skincare.  Drink your morning coffee, but chug water throughout the day. Your mind and body will love you. I discovered flavoring packets that contained caffeine (Crystal Light, Mio, etc) at the beginning of MS2, and let me tell you, life-changing for those mid-afternoon slumps. And all those pee breaks you have to take? Much needed and well-deserved! You donât want a DVT from studying all day.Â
Sleep! I honestly cannot stress this enough. I donât know how I ever pulled all nighters in college and I donât know how my friends did it in medical school. Itâs important for your mental health and physical health. Studies have shown sleep enhances memory retention and youâll study more productively. I became a âmy brain doesnât function after 10pmâ person in medical school, so I went to sleep early-ish and woke up early, but if youâre a night owl, then let yourself sleep in! Youâre not taking away precious study time if youâre sleeping, I promise. And for that night before the test, that extra hour of sleep is way better than staying up an extra hour to read your notes one more time, I pinky promise.Â
Move, stretch, dance, anything not hunched over a desk. Sitting for 12 hours straight is simply not sustainable. Take a couple minute break every hour to give your brain a rest. A lot of people use the Pomodoro technique with success but I never got into it. I downloaded the Forest app and timed myself for an hour, then took a 5-10 minute break between study sessions. Youâll feel refreshed and rejuvenated for another round of studying!Â
Repetition, repetition, repetition. Repetition is key when it comes to learning and memorizing. Figure out your best way of learning and stick with it. Whether it be reading, re-writing notes, listening or watching lectures, recording yourself reading the notes, flashcards, etc. Find it and stick with it. Repeat it until you can do it in your sleep. I would literally wake up sometimes reciting notes in my head and I it was annoying, but it meant I had studied effectively.Â
Questions. Always reinforce your knowledge with questions. You can memorize every page of a textbook but it doesnât mean much unless you can apply it. And the more questions you do, the faster you get at test-taking, which is key once you get into 8 hour board exams. But I digress. Take practice tests, buy review books, invest in question banks. Some professors provide old exam questions for review. Do as many as you can. And if explanations are provided, read them! Theyâre just as much of a learning tool as any other resource! As I reviewed the questions, Iâd take notes, simple one-liner facts, for review later.Â
One pagers. This one may not be for everyone, but they came in clutch for me. My study method was a combination of re-writing notes and reciting things out loud as if Iâm teaching it to a class. I talk to myself a lot. The more comfortable I got with the material, the more I condensed my notes until I had whole lectures or topics down to one page. This page would contain things that I thought were super important that I needed to make sure I knew, or those pesky facts that would not commit themselves to my memory. Because Iâm a firm believe in not re-reading something you know you already know. This also held me accountable to always be actively studying. Then I would review these pages the day before and the morning of exams.Â
Above all else, remember to trust yourself. Donât panic. You put in the time and work, you will do great. If you have anxiety issues, donât be afraid to seek help so you can learn how to get your anxiety under control because school is hard enough without that added obstacle.Â
Study, take that test, go home and pass out, then melt into the couch and watch Netflix for the rest of the day. You deserve it.Â
I was struggling writing the âdecemberâ front & spacing but love my spreadđČâš
I decided to create a masterpost that would help you with what you are struggling with. Hopefully any of the links below will help you! Reminder; Youâre going to be okay. What you are going through will pass, just remember to breathe.Â

As someone who struggles with like almost everything on the list, this helps!! (just be wary some links are not safe, remember to stay on links with the little padlock or https in them!!).Â
A reminder for the girls with big plans
To all the girls with big dreams, who have been told that they are âtoo preoccupied with successâ, or that they are âtoo selfishâ or âtoo ambitiousâ - do not listen to the people who speak those words. If you love something that much, and will pursue it to the ends of the earth, do not give it up for anyone. Hold it close to your heart and understand that you are not obligated to dim your sparkle for anybody. In your life, there will always be people who tell you that you are too much or too little. They will say a woman is too assertive, or too reserved. They will say she feels too little or too much, that ambition is selfish. They may even be hurt or offended that you do not think the same. Yet at the end of the day, know in your heart that you are the only one who will ever know whether you are truly enough and that is whatâs important. Go out there and smash the glass ceiling to pieces.
âThings I Learned in College that I Didnât Earn a Degree For (Alternative Title: Things It Took Me Too Long to Figure Out) 1. Get rid of anybody who makes you feel like youâre hard to love. Get rid of anyone who makes it seem like theyâre doing you a favor by putting up with you. Theyâre not. Hang on instead to the people who love you even when itâs not easy. 2. Yes, you can wear leggings as pants. Yes, you can wear crop tops. Yes, you can wear tight skirts and dresses. Forget all the people who made you feel like you were too fat for those clothes. 3. Itâs okay to want your mommy when youâre 22 and itâs three a.m. and you donât feel like yourself. Sheâll pick up the phone. 4. People love you. 5. You are capable of killing centipedes and spiders and of catching mice. The only thing thatâs stopping you from being able to live alone are the pieces of clothing you own that you canât get out of by yourself. 6. Popcorn is not a meal, stop trying to make it one. 7. When someone gives you a compliment, say thank you. Donât deflect. They wouldnât say such nice things if they werenât genuine, because whatâs in it for them? Nothing. 8. Life is not a fucking competition. If you ever feel yourself doing something because you know itâs going to tear someone else down, quit doing it. Support is rarer than it should be. 9. Let people like what they like and do what they do, as long as itâs not hurting anyone. Donât like it? Cool. Now shut the fuck up because itâs not about you. 10. When it comes to new people, trust your instincts. Theyâre almost always correct. 11. Do yourself a favor and learn how you like to dress and do your makeup and hair. Do yourself up in whatever way feels best to you. Itâs incredibly liberating to think you are beautiful. 12. Friends arenât needlessly cruel. They wonât point out youâre not naturally skinny like the rest of your friends, or refuse to say anything nice about you, or imply that youâre stupid. Anyone who does do those things isnât your friend and you should get rid of them. Immediately. 13. No one cares about your sex life (or impressive lack of), nor are they going to judge your worth by it. So stop using it as a measure of your self-worth. 14. Quit acting like you have forever. Your window of time to do anything gets shorter every day. Make friends with that person, say that thing, eat that slice of pie before somebody else does. 15. Unless youâre trying to win an argument, stop saying, âNo, becauseâŠâ You donât have to justify not wanting to do something or feeling a certain way. âNoâ is an answer on its own. 16. So is âYes.â But always follow through. 17. Be nice to people. Compliment a sweater or a scarf. Let the elderly on the train before you. Be nice to people because it feels good to not be an asshole, but also because every single one of us is going through something. Dealing with bullshit is a human experience, and sometimes all it takes is a small action to lighten someoneâs burden or brighten someoneâs world. 18. Itâs okay to feel creeped out by weird dudes. You donât have to feel guilty about it. Itâs not your fault they stare or make lewd comments. All that matters is that you stay safe. 19. You can always count on your home team, no matter how far away from them you are. And as part of someone elseâs home team, you always have to be prepared to go to bat for somebody else. 20. The people who are still in your life even though you thought you lost them for good at some point are there for a reason. Donât try to figure out what the reason is. Just be grateful. 21. You are good at things. 22. You are good. 23. Itâs okay to have little indulgences. Buy the new bra, drink the third beer, spend the whole day making cookies. You deserve a break. 24. There will always be opportunities. Whether or not itâs the one youâre looking for, you will never be devoid of opportunities.â

Just a little reminderâŠ
hey guys!!!
so this entire past month has been extremely, extremely stressful for me because i had so many exams and i only realised how hideously unprepared i was for them on the day before the exam, which was really really awful. so in the middle of september i created a studyblr to keep myself motivated + get some helpful tips from the studyblr community on how to go abt studying for tests. the results proved to be super helpful and ive resolved to keep running this blog for as long as i can, because it really helps me stay motivated and iâve already learned so many things from the community, despite the fact that iâve only been here for around a month.
but anyways, i decided to create this masterpost in order to help others stay motivated + keep studying not only well but also properly i.e. not necessarily studying for exams but life in general, if that makes sense.

ESSAY WRITING 101: HOW TO GET A FIRST/A* IN ANY ESSAY
Iâve been preparing to start my masters after a one-year break from academia, so Iâm a little apprehensive about getting into essay writing again. I found a great resource on my Universityâs website, giving a universal guide to writing a First Class essay. If youâre about to start your first year at uni, want a refresher, or are taking essay-based classes at your high school, this is the post for you!
C O M P R E H E N S I O N
Use a wide range of relevant sources, well understood and fully appreciated.
What do I need to do?
Read beyond the recommended reading given to you or the textbook in class. Can you explain what youâve read to someone who isnât studying your course - if not, do you really understand it? Â
C R I T I Q U E
Ability to set sources and view points in context and evaluate contributions. Methodological awareness and theoretical appreciation.
What do I need to do?
I posted here about the WHAT-HOW-WHY paragraph structure. The critique is your WHY. WHY is the source written in that way? What was the context of the time or geographical location where it was written? Can either have impacted the writing? What are the limitations to the source - have they avoided discussing something that you believe vital to their argument? Critical thinking is the key to obtaining the highest marks in an essay.
A N A L Y S I S
Excellent answer to the question. Locates suitable concepts and makes a comprehensive assessment of issues involved. Understands the relevant theories and applies them to answering the question.
What do I need to do?
Answer the question. It seems silly but answer the question. What are you actually being asked to talk about, and are there any limiting factors (e.g. a specific time period)? Make sure that everything youâre saying is relevant to the question. If youâre anything like me, going off on a tangent is second nature. A good tip is to read your essay aloud to yourself - if you can sense youâre waffling on about something, then cut it out.Â
P R E S E N T A T I O N
Well structured and planned. Clear, articulate style (good spelling, grammar, and syntax.) Proper referencing and bibliography. Confident presentation and appropriate length.
What do I need to do?
Plan plan plan. I never really understood the importance of proper essay planning before I got to University, but it really cannot be emphasised enough. Try and plan in a cyclical sense, taking a thematic approach to your writing and ensuring your main thesis argument is clear throughout your writing. It can be good to break one large essay into 2 or 3 smaller ones, but make sure that they are well connected and donât read in a disjointed manner. Linking your introduction and conclusion can be an excellent way to ensure that your essay reads fluidly. Another top tip for writing a conclusion is to point your reader to further reading in the area youâre writing about - this helps to place your work as part of the academic conversation on the topic.

If youâre anything like me, you go to the library with the best intentions then inevitably get distracted and wind up finishing none of the tasks you set out to do. Hereâs a handy guide to how to get more done when you go to the library!
Planning your study session
Know what youâre doing ahead of time. Not only does this mean you can plan out your time to keep you on task, but you can also pare down which books and notes you need to bring.
Try and choose subjects that you need to be in the library for. For instance, if you need books to write an essay, read them in the library so you donât have to drag them home. Itâs better for your back, and more motivating when your time is limited!
Make a plan! Whether itâs just a to-do list or chunking your work into ten minute blocks, have goals to accomplish and keep yourself on task.
Donât expect to be fully focused the whole time youâre there. No one can concentrate for 4 hours straight, so work some breaks into your plan and cut yourself some slack.
What to bring
A water bottle. Youâre better off staying hydrated with water than sugary drinks from the vending machine, and bringing your own bottle is the best way to do that because you can keep it right at your desk.
Your chargers! Nothing cuts a study session short like your computer dying, so be prepared and make sure youâve got your laptop/phone/tablet charger on hand.
A jacket. At least at my university, the library is almost always freezing. Even if yours isnât, bring a jacket to keep you warm because sitting still for ages is a surefire way to cool you down!
Healthy snacks. Bringing your own food means you wonât be spending money, and you have a reason to stay at your desk and away from the vending machine. It also means no noisy crisp packets! Hereâs a guide to library-friendly quiet snacks.
Headphones. Sometimes, even the library can be a bit noisy. Whether youâd prefer silence or some light music, having headphones can help you out.
Study essentials. Donât depend on the library having copies of your required textbook, so bring your own from home, alongside essentials like pens & paper!
Making the most of the library
Donât sit on the ground floor. Itâs the loudest and busiest, and the place where youâre most likely to run into friends or get distracted, so avoid it off the bat. Similarly, stay away from high traffic areas like the loos, printers, and cafe.
Use the resources available! The library offers so much more than books: research databases, primary sources, librarians, and even audio resources if youâre a languages student like me. Make the most of all thatâs on offer!
Get there early. Especially in exam season, the library fills up pretty fast and that can prevent you from sitting where you would usually. If you want a prime spot, your best bet is to get there when the library opens.
Try booking a study room. They can be great for working on group projects or if you want to snag a one person room and work with even fewer distractions.
Remember that the library doesnât guarantee productivity. You still need to be prepared and focused, regardless of the location! Try and ditch the rest of the dayâs worries at the door and just concentrate on work.

Today Iâm doing something a little different for my 100 Days of Productivity / Day 11. Inspired by a reply I had on a @starsandaspirations (whoâs super sweet and has a very cute blog!) post, Iâm going to be detailing how I create my study schedule. Itâs going to be rather detailed, so Iâm going to put most of it under the cut.Â
1. Know when your large assignments are due.Â
As soon as I get my syllabus, I write down the dates of my major assignments, exams, and finals. I use a planner and a monthly calendar so that I know when my big deadlines are on the horizon.
