Finally a hand sewing tutorial on a hemline that isn't just the ladder stitch! the ladder stitch disappears when you tighten it, but it's not meant for hemlines because it breaks really easily! The overlock stitch is more stable, so it holds much longer, and it won't pucker or warp the fabric!

Why is it so seemingly common to see crunchy gamebooks (not just D&D, lots of games) follow a method of writing where game terms that are invoked dozens or even hundreds of times will have only one passing mention of the term's definition.

Never repeated, never pointed to by any other passage, not even given in an index or glossary, just secreted away in a seemingly random spot like a game of Where's Waldo in a 200+ page text.

This isn't meant to be venting, it's genuinely perplexing that an approach so specific and so counterproductive seems to happen so often. What's the deal?

Most tabletop game designers are very bad technical writers.

(This isn't a knock against game designers in particular; most people in general are very bad technical writers, even among those whose job is to be good at it. It turns out that assessing how your own writing will read from the perspective of someone who doesn't know the things you know is an extremely difficult skill to learn!)

If you're bent in a very particular way, it can be a fun exercise to go through independently published tabletop RPGs and count how many times they just plain forgot to explicitly define some critical piece of jargon the text uses constantly. For most that number is higher than zero!

Love this, and the points you’re making are quite true, in that he does love teaching. It’s the second part of the last line that I doubt, however.

“Won’t admit it.”

This is from the end of ch 95 btw.

In this frame, he states that he’s taking the girls on a field trip. (In the English translation), he even calls himself their master! To me, this is not the vibe of a man who would not admit that he loves teaching.

Of course, the argument can be made that this is later in the manga, and recent events have shifted his perspective on the matter. However, there’s a panel from the same chapter at the top (39) that, in my eyes, reveals the real reason.

Here, Jujy has asked him why he wouldn’t take on an apprentice, and he says this:

Now, it’s important to note here that Olly is a Watchful Eye. And for all the skirting his job that he does do, there are instances where he puts his foot down. His debut wasn’t Like That ™ for nothing.

For several reasons (his childhood and being a prodigy, Qifrey’s shitfuckery against the Brims), he is quite pro-Pact. (Not to the levels of someone in the KM, say, but I’d say he’s one of the most conservative members of Qifrey’s Atelier). And I believe that’s what’s being referenced here.

And here comes the theory segment:

I believe that this is about to change in the coming arc. He’s facing dragons, he’s without Qifrey, tensions are rising, and people, including the atelier fam, are beginning to have doubts in the current PH system. I think something is going to happen in this arc that disproves what he said in 39.

And I don’t think he’ll be the only one.

I theorise as well that Agott is also going to slowly start to question and doubt the current system, but I think that for her, this will take longer.

Anyway, this was quite fun!

(PS: You mentioned him possibly taking on Tartah in the future, and I’d like to say that as he is right now, that’s not happening. Tartah is currently highly skeptical of the pact and pointed caps, enough to leave with the Brims. If my theories are correct, however… it could be discussed)

Olruggio's views around teaching have always been quite fascinating because even though he claims to have no interest in it which led to him never pursuing the 5th test, he still seems incredibly genuine and passionate about teaching those he believes deserve to learn. It's almost like he does indeed enjoy teaching but seems to understand the burden of a teacher and isn't willing to commit to that. The best way to describe it is like a babysitter who likes taking care of children but isn't willing to become a parent.

While his introduction suggests that he staunchly upholds the pact as he is willing to turn Coco in, his later interactions seem to depict some nuance. Olruggio seems to genuinely believe that the pact is there to protect people and lives, but even he finds himself questioning this fact when he is helping out civillains with Hieheart. It's strongly hinted that olruggio was fully considering taking in the child and helping him learn magic which is quite ironic considering that such action is incredibly contradictory to our first view of him as someone who follows the pact and that prior to this he expressed his unwillingness to become a master. The same child makes another appearance in the silver Eve arc, and I think that there is a possibility Olruggio will take him in as his own instead of Tartah. However, I can also see olruggio taking on Tartah as an apprentice as he dismantles his beliefs about the pact, especially if shirahama parallels this apprentice and mentor relationship by having Luluci take in Coustas like Dagda wanted her to.

I wonder if Hieheart and jujy will take in the child? My reasoning for this theory isn't particularly strong and stems from the design choice of Jujy and Hieheart constantly being associated with the number 3. Not only that, but the child also makes an appearance both times at crucial moments for Hieheart and Jujy as characters: moments where the pact is almost broken.

The upcoming arc is likely to fully dismantle olruggio's beliefs because of how close to home it might hit him. Taking the girls on a field trip during the unpredictable winter season where they end up discovering dragon eggs and possible monsters nearby sounds a bit too similar to the tragedy that scarred olruggio all those years ago. While Olruggio maintains the pact, if push comes to shove, he is more than willing to break it or cast aside his own worries to try and do something to help. We can see this with the way he utilises his own magic. While he is initially against using his fire magic to burn the curtain leech, the moment he becomes desperate when he sees the reckless plan that Agott and Coco pulled and the potential danger their in, he ends up resorting to using fire magic and would have done so had Qifrey not intervened. Now, as you stated, Qifrey isn't here, and the situation can take a turn for the worse, so how will olruggio confront this, and what criticisms will he have towards the pact?

On another note, Agott has already shown her criticisms towards the pact through her relationship with Coco. I would say that the earliest signs of this are when she starts to believe that Coco can become a regular witch like her if she were to learn the rules. Over time, you're able to see Agott's criticism of the system develop as she takes on bolder and unique plans that aren't a 'witches norm'. Not to mention, that compared to Richeh and Tetia, Agott is shown nearing the middle of the page with Coco when we are shown the sides they take. However, it's also important to mention that Agott's questioning isn't as direct and critical as Richeh and Tetia just yet.

Genuinely, one of the measures that's stopped book banning the most when districts implement it, is having the would-be banners fill out a form that demonstrates if they've read the book or not. Like where they have the summarize the plot and characters and do a mini book report and give a review. It stops them in their tracks. This is why in my high school, every time someone wanted to ban a book it ended up going nowhere. There was one where a conservative student wanted to ban the manga "Legal Drug" for having a marijuana leaf on the cover, then got the form that required them to actually read and either balked, or read it and realized it was not pro-drug at all. (The other one that reduces book bans even further is "requiring the would-be banner to be affiliated with this actual school in some way, either by being a student, faculty/staff or a parent of a child at the school" because the vast majority of bans are "activists" with no affiliation with the school who just travel around trying to do this in districts all over the U.S. IIRC a few years ago someone crunched the numbers and just 51 parents were responsible for all the book bans that year nationally. 51! In a country with 50 states, with over 300 million people total!)
