“I was on a strict diet during Episode VIII, and she was like, ‘Kid, get into that fridge and take some chocolate bars. I have many there.’ And I did,” he recalls. “I failed my diet because Carrie Fisher told me to. And it [felt] great.”

This is the Carrie Fisher post of body positivity reblog for a chocolate bar from her fridge
Ok, after sitting through all the fatphobic comments on Fattitude that are found both on YouTube and on Tumblr, I am amazed that a lot of these people not only missed the point of the documentary, but here’s a counter argument: Even if these people are “unhealthy” as they seem to claim, that’s NO excuse to treat them like crap and ignore their valid points they raised.
————
Mod response:
Precisely. Astonishingly, people should be treated with respect and dignity irregardless of their health and ability level.
Though I certainly do not agree that fat = unhealthy, it does not follow from the the premise that fat = unhealthy that fat people deserve to be treated patronizingly at best, or like second-class citizens at worst.
In my 12 years of contributing to fat activist spaces, writing about fatness, reading books and articles about the science and sociology of fatness, and reading many many MANY comments on articles and blogs and any bit of writing that dares to talk about fat people openly, I’ve come to a clear understanding of why health is so often invoked when vilifying fatness.
To justify hatred.
The premise that fat = unhealthy serves primarily as a vehicle for fat hatred, or as a reason to command and control the lives of fat and often poor people.
It has nothing to do with real concern for us or for fat children.

In my job as a fat activist, people like to fling links at me that they think disprove the things I am saying. When the planets align in just the right way and the whim strikes me, I’ll dig into their links and see if there’s anything there. I haven’t been flung a worthwhile one yet, but I’m open to new experiences. And I want to teach you how to do it too so you can have a better idea of how to sort out the good information from the bad.
In a world where anyone can make a video or put up a website, how can we tell if someone is a real expert?
An article written by me, for the National Eating Disorder Association.
This is a good primer on how to start reading scientific journal articles on weight.

So Manny Jacinto is unquestionably a very handsome man but … is anyone else weirded out by the degree to which his looks are being heavily emphasized over the actual content of his climate change activism?
My personal favorite is the one with the headline that starts “Manny Jacinto, Who Can Wreck The Hole In My Ozone Layer …”
Hashtag yikes.
For what it’s worth, the protest was part of the Fire Drill Fridays protests spearheaded by Jane Fonda. As Fonda’s website puts it:
Fire Drill Fridays
As Greta Thunberg said, “This is a crisis. We have to act like our house is on fire, because it is.” She’s right, just like the young people from Standing Rock, the kids on the islands disappearing under the Pacific and in Houston and Flint and Kern County and so many other places. They’re all right. This is an urgent, major crisis. And they’re asking our help. That’s why Jane Fonda has moved to Washington, DC. Every Friday for the next 4 months at 11 am ET in front of the US Capitol, Jane will be joined by scientists, movement leaders, experts, activists, Indigenous leaders, and community members to answer the alarm sounded by young people and demand that action by our political leaders be taken to address the climate emergency.Join us for #FireDrillFriday Read more: www.FireDrillFridays.com
I had to read four articles about it yesterday before I finally got to one that actually talks about the substance of what he said. Fuck, man.
Why talk about what he said – which directly invokes the racism involved with climate denialism – when you can say he’s so bae and so woke? /s
this literally reminded me of the whole thing where the guy was attacked in a hate crime and everyone was talking about how hot he was
Anyone else like,, really tired of seeing only thin people in media

Fatphobic Misadventures with POTS and Cardiology
Around the beginning of 2014 I started getting a bunch of nasty symptoms on top of the ones I already had. I had a super high heart rate, trouble standing or walking too long and later my legs would go purple when not lying down. My GP totally dismissed them as fat problems, even as the illness quickly progressed to the point I was spending 99% of my time house bound. I spent years blaming myself. Thinking I just wasn’t trying hard enough to be active. I got extremely depressed and isolated. I constantly gaslit myself about the intensity of my problems. Eventually, my illness got so bad, I had to spend almost all of my time in bed, even sitting up for more than a half hour caused symptoms to flare.
I switched GPs a bunch of times but never bothered to tell them much about my ‘fat’ problems and they made it clear in my medical records they didn’t think I was really disabled. Just fat.
One day I found out about Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome online when someone mentioned exercise intolerance. I researched it and found a description of my life for the last two years. By a stroke of luck, I found a GP willing to listen and after a quick test, he sent a referral to cardiology.
I thought going to specialist would be the real answer to all this. I finally get my appointment and its with a registrar. We were making progress. Until he went to speak with his boss. He came back in and told me what I’d been hearing for years; I’m just fat, I need to exercise and lose weight. I don’t need a betablocker to control my extremely high heart rate. It actually needed to be that fast because I was SO FAT. He suggested bariatric surgery, I told him that would lower my quality of life and he said I have none. Then he told me I was too young to be in a wheelchair. I got nothing from this appointment except disappointment.
I sent a complaint and found out their equipment to test me for POTS couldn’t accommodate me and they had no protocol in place for fat people. The test can cause fainting so they needed to be able to lift me. They just didn’t bother with that over a certain weight and as far as I know they still have no protocol for it.
Do you understand what happened here? They realised they didn’t have what they needed to give me proper medical care. Instead of fucking fixing that obvious problem, they turned it back on me. They tried to blame me and scare me off. Convince the patient their horrible, debilitating illness is all their own fault and they either lose weight and become an acceptable patient or they don’t and you just don’t have to see them again. Who wants to fix a fatty anyway?
(I ended up getting my diagnosis via elimination, some betablockers and some compression stockings after the complaint and I’ve improved somewhat, so this has an OK ending, even though I never got my proper test.)
And the thing that really gets me about all this, about everything I’ve been through, is how many other people must have been through similar and just accepted it or didn’t have the energy to fight it? How many people have accepted they were wrong for having the wrong bodies and deserved to go without healthcare? How many of us are suffering or have died? This is so fucking horrifying. I want to encourage other fat people to speak up. I want to hear our stories about medical discrimination. People need to know how bad this is, so we have to tell them.
This needs to be read by EVERYONE.
Hey just wanna give everyone a heads up that the original poem was stolen from a queer Asian women and she specifically wrote this poem about the trauma she faced at the hands of white people. Please reblog this version of this post! Also follow her on twitter!

“Love and fury can coexist” is one of the rawest fucking statements regarding human rights activism that I’ve ever heard
Thin/average-sized woman: And I've learned to live with having a little bit of a belly
Me: Cool, do you hate fat women though?
Me: Do you hate fat women?
Me: Do you think stomachs bigger than yours are still unacceptable?
Me: do you hate fat women though?
Me: Did you examine the thinking that made you hate that part of yourself in the first place or have you just settled on it being not as 'bad' as it could be?

This is so powerful.
It’s Nick Randhawa! Had the great pleasure of knowing him at Berkeley. He’s done fantastic work.
Always reblog this
It’s back!
Finally a version with his name
The idea that skinny people are inherently more attractive is honestly so fucking harmful like we’ve built our society around the idea that fat is ugly and gross when it’s fucking not?? Why would we do that?? Fat people are beautiful!! Why are we basing anything on the fucked up idea that your weight is an indicator for literally anything other than how much you weigh??
Here Are the Jewish People
Western popular concepts of Jews that people here take as the extent of our tribe:
The reality:
Boys from the Jewish population of Yemen, which has been around for 2500 hundred years but has been slowly massacred over the past few generations.
The Lemba of South Africa and Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe in particular has a large and VERY long history with their Jewish Community)
The Abayudaya of Uganda, some of the great Jewish musicians
The Beta Israeli of Ethiopia
Igbo Jews of Nigeria
Cochin Jews of India
Baghdadi Jews
Kaifeng Jews of China, who go back to the 7th or 8th century. Unfortunately, during the 20th century much of their culture was almost wiped out and the Kaifeng are currently working to rediscover their Jewish heritage and culture.
Jewish Children in Puerto Rico (Jews have been in Puerto Rico since the 15th century, many fleeing from the Inquisition)
The Beit Shalom Choir in Japan
Kosher comes in all colors, from all over the world, and in a variety cultural groups. We’re a small portion of the human population, but we have EVERYONE. We are all members of this tribe.
Because stereotypes are bullshit.
Boosting because you sure as fuck won’t see this in any Western textbook.

So many of you seem to think American authoritarianism, racism, and xenophobia started with trump and it irritates the fuck out of me. Y’all have just ignored the screaming of black and native people for hundreds of years and now suddenly think racism is real. I’m tired.
