So, if I understand, the shape and appearance of the Avatars is due to a program that reflects the User's mind state. Normally, this program would run during the Avatar's creation and be turned off after it. BUT!!!! What if the Program is constantly running in the background and it never turns off????

Simple. Don’t read fics that don’t have trigger warnings. Don’t watch movies that don’t have a “does the dog die” page. Don’t read books without a comprehensive list of trigger warnings someone else made.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

A concept can scare you, offend you, horrify you, disgust you … and not trigger you. A psychological trigger is stimuli that causes an overwhelming physical/emotional reaction (for me, it’s people screaming at their kids– instant panic attack). When it’s bad, it can kick off deep depressions, panic attacks, self-harm episodes.

As adults, it’s our responsibility to know where our triggers are, avoid them where possible, and know how to deal when they happen. Artists cannot account for every single possible trigger in every single person in the world … and they shouldn’t have to. Take responsibility for your own well-being, and accept that consumption of art is done at one’s own risk.

Also not for nothing but… there’s a comment section that’s open in most AO3 fics. If you are truly concerned a fic may contain one of your specific squicks or triggers that you absolutely cannot read about, you can try asking before reading. If you ask “hey does this contain X?” and the author is still around, they’ll probably answer to the best of their ability. I know I would, and have done in the past. I’ll spoil anything someone wants, if they ask me. My fics don’t have a “does the dog die” page but I’m happy to answer if the metaphorical dog does or does not die if asked. Maybe some authors won’t respond, or won’t tell, but then just don’t read that fic (which you wouldn’t be doing anyway if you didn’t ask… right?).

Authors may not be able to account for every squick or trigger out there up front - and again, it’s not their responsibility to do that anyway when it comes to their leisure time activity - but fandom IS a community and I think most fanfic authors won’t have a problem helping another member of their fandom stay safe if directly and politely asked for help.

Some authors do provide very extensive content notes and even then it is in the end impossible to describe everything that is on the fic, because that description would just be the fic.

Also, actual triggers can be something like reading about a bad thing that happened to you, BUT, especially with PTSD, where a lot of problems stem from the fact that the memories aren’t encoded right in your brain, triggers are completely random stuff that your brain connects to the trauma. They can range from ‘can’t listen to church music because she was abused by a priest’ to a specific perfume to a specific saying or turn of phrase that your abuser was fond of to a specific colour of sunlight before a storm that destroyed your house to……… and lots and lots and most of these things that are triggers to people are in no way objectively bad or even things writer could even think to mention in the notes.

Now, I think warnings and content notes (and there is an important difference there, people used to WARN for homosexual or queer content) are a good invention, but nobody should be obligated to provide them.

In fact (and I remember all these discussions from before and when ao3 was being founded and the warning system established, none of this is new) beyond the topic of wanting to surprise readers, for some authors the concept of tagging to completion, in the end impossible, as mentioned above, is an anxiety trigger.

We know that we cannot take the current President's statements at face value. But in light of Trump's recent speech where he claimed that he's "saved" NASA and always supported them (which isn't true), I wanted to elaborate on some of this.

He's slashed the budget, forced removal of DEI history and contributions at NASA, and caused many NASA workers' unemployment. I have worked closely with people in these spheres and know that the budget cuts have deeply jeopardized the future space missions, space exploration, and space science.

My close friends and colleagues, especially those relying on DEI programs, have had such a difficult time during this administration, and we still are. This program found some success with Artemis II and beyond in spite of the current administration's lack of support and lack of funding.
