i wish mosquitos didn't make you itchy and give you horribly infectious diseases. i wouldn't begrudge them a humble nibble were it not so

To that silly nineties R&B seventies vinyl humanity
When we have a drink or three
Always ends in a hazy shower scene' X

so many people don't understand how abelist it is to kill your brother with a rock
I mean. Yeah. What the hell do you think war is? Why do you think we came up with the concept of a war crime?
"Violent and fucked up things happen in war" Yes! Yes they do! Because war is inherently fucked up and violent! There is no nice war! There is no good or just or noble war!
One might say that the very concept of a "war crime" is an oxymoron because all war is a crime against humanity.
But still. Rules for war exist to protect the civilian population, because they are an easy and rewarding target if you want to de-normalize your enemy. The whole basis for this is the assertion that civilians aren't a threat to military operations and therefore, not legitimate targets.
But yes! Hiding weapons or combatants in hospitals does make that hospital a legitimate target! Because it now is part of your military infrastructure! If someone participates in the fight, they are a valid target! What do you think war is!!!
The purpose of war is to strongarm your opponent into doing whatever you want them to do through violence. The commitment to upholding the Geneva convention is a thin veneer of civility at best. If you are truly committed to upholding human rights and protecting your civilians, you do not start a fucking war.
The Geneva convention is the promise to keep harm to civilians to a minimum as long as they are not put directly into the line of fire. It's a flimsy protection, that doesn't really do much, since there's little enforcement. But if you do decide to put your civilians directly into the line of fire, all bets are off. Which is why governments who actually give a shit about their population generally try to avoid this.
"That seems unfair" Yes! It does, doesn't it! Again, what do you think war is!
real talk why do so many fantasy universes think giant spiders are necessary
The sad part is there’s a decent chance a large proportion of them can be blamed on one spider.
The tarantula that bit JRR Tolkien as a child.
He swore he didn’t have a spider phobia and the experience had nothing to do with the man-eating giant spiders in The Hobbit, the even more giant and even more man-eating spider in Lord of the Rings, or the unholy eldritch spider from outside creation that plunged the world into darkness and made literal Satan scream like a little kid in the Silmarillion. Very few people believe him.
Given LotR’s influence in the fantasy genre, there is a high probability that tarantula is the progenitor of even more fictional spiders than Ungoliant was.
wow fuck that one tarantula
“fantasy universes have too many spiders” factoid actually just statistical error. Georgs Spider, who bit JRR Tolkein & is to blame for menacing over 10,000 fantasy universes, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
I remember years ago, long enough ago that I was still using either Tiktok or Instagram regularly, because that's where I saw this, long enough ago that unfortunately I do not remember the username, I saw an older trans woman responding to a comment asking "how come we see trans women from your generation, but never trans men?" And her response was simple. "Unfortunately, it's because most of them are dead." Between lack of safe and legal abortions (which, hey, look what's an issue again), the HIV/AIDs crisis (which still is lacking in approved treatments for trans men, and they're still likely to be denied PrEP/PEP even when they should be eligible as sexually active queer men), and how many of them chose to take their own lives after being forced into marriages and other women's roles, a lot of the trans men that should be elderly right now did not make it.
And now, when I find myself making the mistake of going on Instagram, I get to see trans men themselves talking about how historically, trans men didn't do anything for the community, and so we need to step up now. Which, first of all, that isn't true, but second of all, if trans men's contributions are lesser, that makes a lot of sense if we listen to that trans woman talking about the trans men she was in community with back in the day. It's very hard to advance the trans cause if you're not alive.
Anyway. It's a really chilling answer. "Where are all the elderly trans men?" "They're dead." And I just wish more people saw that tiktok and listened to it and really took it to heart, now that we're in the age of "well obviously trans men have it so much easier."
More examples of the WORST mansplaining here.
This might be my favorite

this is from "research as a leisure activity" by celine nguyen, publs. on stubstack in 2024. it's a very good read
I met someone when I was pretty young who had received a generous inheritance -- not enough to live a life of luxury, but enough to live on comfortably without working. He had chosen to simply keep going to school his whole life. He did get degrees, but he didn't use them for anything other than pleasure -- he had a Ph.D but also two Master's degrees, three BAs, and was currently serving an apprenticeship in blacksmithing while considering trying out some trade schools next. I thought, if I had the money I'd do that too, and then thought about how I still could learn all the time, it would just have to be a hobby instead of the career he'd made of it. It definitely changed the way I saw both education and leisure.

Obv Three hasn't gone thru all of its character development yet, but the current fandom take on it is that Three is a sociable softie who loves nature and learning.
Which is very adorable, and as textually supported as anything can be. But I propose:
--Three canonically tries to get SecUnit to wear its armor by pointing at it for two minutes without saying a word
--SecUnit canonically pulls a lot of things it says directly from Sanctuary Moon, which it has watched thousands of hours of, and Three hasn't
--Three is into documentaries and nonfiction
--Three is used to working with other SecUnits
Thus,
Three rarely speaks, but when it does, it's basically *David Attenborough voice*. When Three and SecUnit are working together and SecUnit forgets to tell the humans what it's doing, Three (who hasn't said a word in the past six hours) suddenly says, "Your SecUnit is currently attempting a hack on nearby drones. This has a high probability of success, but there is always the chance that these drones have had their security features altered. ...and there, these drones are now under our control. Our path forward is clear, but we will continue to use caution," like it's narrating Blue Planet
tags from @arbitrarycategories :
#obsessed with this take not only bc I can see it happening but also because murderbot would HATE being narrated#every time Three does this Murderbot sends it a message it the feed that just says ‘knock that shit off’ and Three ignores it and they#do this every time forever. like a weird friendship ritual.#the murderbot diaries#tmbd
murderbot: SHUT THE FUCK UP WE ARE ON A MISSION
three: the humans need to know :) :)
ART, shoving a fully edited documentary with beautifully generated graphics behind its back: yeah, SecUnit, the humans need to know what's going on. It's of critical mission importance.
three, very quietly to the shared feed: Although it may seem stressed, a SecUnit having spare attention with which to swear at other SecUnits is actually an indicator of healthy processor usage---
"hot girls do this" "hot girls do that" you bore me. ugly and cold women rise
i got these knockoff boots online and instead of the brand name on the tag they have the name of an apparently nonexistent martin scorsese movie??? what the fuck
THE ORIGINAL? ON MY DASH
this post led to a series of events that had martin scorsese himself reacting to his alleged movie goncharov and it has less than 400k notes almost 3 years later?
