thinking about teen wolf and sexual violence in the first three seasons I might actually throw up . . . scott being dressed as little red riding hood is his first appearance and the night of his turning which completely changes and steals his body and mind . . . the turning which like lydia's is framed as an assault and then with lydia in s2 peter so thoroughly invades every corner of her life while trying to create life from her body and no one notices!! or at least, no one really cares!! they don't have the time to care!! vs s3 nogitsune arc being kicked off with stiles alone in bed and by the end of it he's lost his literal, actual body . . . he's stuck in a copy of it which was quite literally created by his abuser. your body gets stolen or your body gets changed and it means the same thing, both ways

Adding to this by saying the fact that their bodies were taken advantage of supernaturally means that even if they were to tell someone (other than the pack), no one would believe them. They’re forced to keep the changes and violations to their bodies secret from (most) adults, have to go to school and act like everything is normal and that nothing bad happened because no one would believe them.

Also adding on that when Melissa saw Scott as a werewolf for the first time she didn’t speak to him or look at him for a while. Scott not only had to deal with the shame of being forced to become something he’s not after one attack that changed his entire life and outlook on life, he also had to deal with the fear and shame his mother had for him and the isolation many victims of S/A deal with.

Side note; Dereks pack in season 2. They all wanted the bite but as Scott (someone who got bitten in a violent and manipulating way) says, they don’t understand what they’re getting into. They’re kids who can’t legally consent to anything even if they (think they) want it. And lo and behold it does not work out for them because at the end of the day they were taken advantage of, violated, and threatened like any other victims.

A disturbing scene that still bothers me

Whenever I think about how terribly Derek (in the early seasons) and Peter treated Scott, theres a specific scene that always comes to mind and I hate that it’s barely brought up in the fandom.

Scott, a teenager, is literally being cornered by two grown men while he has NOTHING but a towel covering himself. IN. THE. DARK.

I can’t even imagine how fucking scared he was as Peter (literally his tormentor) approaches him as he looks back at Derek for help. Peter FORCES him to relive his traumatic memories and he’s just left shaking on the floor while Derek just stands there??? Mind you this is the SECOND time Peter does something to Scott without his consent (first being the bite).

This is why I can never take people seriously who insist that Scott was in the wrong for not trusting Derek in season one. In what fucking world would he ever trust a random grown man who was 1. Stalking him 2. Putting his hands on him, and 3. On Peters side at the time. Scott’s perspective is barely taken into consideration because this is just horrific to think about.

Now don’t get me wrong part of me still likes Derek. I think his relationship with Scott later on is sweet (loved the hug scene) but sometimes I can’t stand him in the first two seasons.

As for Peter? I have nothing but pure hatred for him.

I have this headcanon in my head that Rafael didn't ever actually believe that Scott's asthma was real. Like a scene plays in my head where Scott is forced to get a ride with him, and once he enters the car, Rafael is like

"See? I told you it was all in your head. You just had to get over it."

"What is?"

"Oh, your asthma. I'm proud of you."

And the entire ride is painfully quiet as Scott looks at the window with his eyes blurry.

I so agree and I love this post because I feel like Scott's asthma (like his dynamic with Rafael) gets overlooked. Scott describes his asthmatic condition as "severe," which is a medical term in this context and means his life was really ruled by asthma. Other scenes back this up: when Scott's asthma returns, he collapses in the middle of class, and then suffers regular intense onsets of debilitating attacks that have him on the ground, which he says was his asthma coming back "as bad as ever." In the brief scene before the bite, he can't handle a short walk through the woods, I suspect because it was mildly cold and a bit damp.

Despite this, it also makes sense to me that he'd still be on a team and work out; I've known other people with severe asthma who were talented athletes. To get back to Rafael, I think the uncertainty of a chronic condition like this would infuriate him, particularly since it's something his wife would be the bigger expert in, which he would resent. Scott's asthma would become a shifting target that could variously be something Scott was lying about or exaggerating to get pity, something his wife was lying about, a mindset Scott needed to get over, something Rafael had to toughen him out of, something his wife was lying about, proof Scott was weak or effeminate, something Scott made up to cost him money, proof Scott wasn't his biological child etc. In moments like above he'd use it as this backhanded conditional praise that only cements his superiority and worldview. And Scott still on some level accepts it: picking fights with his dad is dangerous, for one thing, and he also does want his father to love him. Moments like this seem inevitable in that dark time Scott mentions once--and then, tellingly, never again--when he lived alone with his father.

Also, friendly reminder that Scott was never this wide-eyed naive innocent fandom likes to paint him as.

He grew up with an angry alcoholic father who abandoned him and his mother years ago.

He grew up with a physical illness that impaired his ability to be the athlete he wanted to be, so much so that even his closest friend expressed doubt rather than support when he talked about how he was going to make the team.

He grew up so acutely aware of financial stresses that he went back into the woods to the very spot where he was just attacked by a vicious monster the night before, because he couldn’t afford to lose an inhaler that cost $80.

He grew up so aware of his place in the social hierarchy of high school and the capacity of his classmates to be assholes that he didn’t even blink, let alone protest when Jackson shoved him into the lockers in the iconic ‘where are you getting your juice’ scene.

The world sucks and people can be awful was never a revelation to Scott McCall. It was never a reality he needed to be protected from, that he could be protected from. It takes strength to be aware of the world, of your life sucking, and managing to still be optimistic anyway, choosing to still smile, and make dumb jokes, and have dreams and ambitions and try to always see the best in people.

Stop stripping Scott McCall of his strength pre-pilot just because you can’t conceive of a character who knows the world can be awful and still finds a way to be happy and optimistic and hopeful.

Death to the myth that jaded = strength, that anything else can only mean someone hasn’t seen enough or struggled enough to know that jaded is the only appropriate path forward.
