au-roulette

AU Roulette 2026 Sign-ups are officially open!

And with that, we are getting things started! As a brief reminder for those new to the event -- AU Roulette is a casual fic-writing challenge encouraging fanfic authors to play around with different types of alternate universe stories, which will be randomly assigned to each participant regardless of the fandom they sign up with.

Writers will be able to sign up from May 10th-31st with a fandom of their choice. At the start of June, each participant will be assigned three AUs from a masterlist using a random number generator. Each author will then have the choice of completing the challenge one, two, or all three of the AUs. Any fic exceeding a 500-word minimum will be considered a completion, so long as it employs the AU premise. Fics can then be posted at any point during the month of June.

As a reminder: The fandom you signed up with is used to filter AU assignments, in order to minimize re-rolls! (For example, someone signing up with "The Lord of the Rings" will not be assigned a High Fantasy AU). Please only sign-up with one fandom.

the crazy thing about doctor who is that it really is the best show ever for 30 seconds at a time. you never know when those 30 seconds will be. sometimes they happen multiple times in a single episode and sometimes you wait years and years and years. and the best part is those 30 seconds are surrounded by the worst show ever, which is also doctor who

2. a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom

i think if we're going straightup by "fave" it's rose and i actually think rose is vers. however! i will die on the thirteenth doctor stone top hill (i will die on this hill for a few doctors, but not every regeneration). it's hard to make a compelling argument that isn't just "look at her" but i think if you combine 1. the levels of trauma and repression she's dealing with 2. the specific vibe of like. long sleeves under short sleeves 3. her seeming discomfort around physical contact it makes a lot of sense as a read. and also look at her.

10. worst part of fanon

i feel like i complain about fanon on here so often that this is a bit redundant... BUT anything that acts like the doctor is going to form a regular monogamous nuclear-family-adjacent relationship or attachment. this is really common with both doctorrose and thasmin shippers (probably other doctor/companion ships but i've spent the most time with doctorrose and thasmin) where like... they act like the doctor will just pair up with someone and go on regular dates and then that person is the Only Person For The Doctor. to me, if you're an immortal alien the way you approach relationships is going to be so fundamentally different. and that's what's compelling about doctorrose as we see it onscreen, too, they don't do traditional relationship milestones so much but you can see they're obsessed with each other. and i think potentially also what's so freeing about it for rose, even though it's also a very repressed situation in other ways.

and then from there also i think the impulse to say that the resulting relationship is perfectly healthy is really misguided. i am a fan of a long term doctorrose relationship but to be honest i think it would need to fall apart and be rebuilt a million times to get there. as any relationship does, probably.

i guess ultimately i'm not really a nuclear family white picket fence kind of person + i find monogamy-as-default wildly unrelatable. most of what i outlined above is basically wish fulfillment for a lot of people but i find it stifling to the point of horror

22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores

ooh this is a really good question... there's a really interesting phenomenon in doctorrose fandom in particular where there are a lot of people who clearly really liked 2005-2010 doctor who but don't care about anything before or after that. so like i'm not going to say "everyone ignores" the timeless child lore because a lot of people have very strong opinions about it but i do think it retroactively adds a lot of resonance to earlier seasons if you know about it and are willing to play with it a bit. and i suspect a lot of doctorrose fans specifically are happy to stay within the bounds of 2005-2010 doctor who.

there are also a lot of little things... like, the one "meet rose" article that rtd wrote for doctor who magazine when s1 came out establishes that rose would've done A-levels in art, french, and english, and that she ran away from a school trip to france and got sent home and later got her school choir to go on strike. and these are all delightful character details that i would love to see get more attention. as far as i'm aware, this article exists online solely as a grainy png, at some point i might transcribe it because i think about it all the time:

one of my biggest doctorrose pet peeves is when writers overemphasize rose being small because they think size differences are hot. and like i don't disagree but factually billie piper is a fairly average size. it often comes off infantilizing to act as if that's not the case
