4 days ago I changed the way I rotate my avatar in a way that among other things greatly increased the variety of distinct images that are pushed to Tumblr's avatar endpoint. In fact, many of the images sent are completely novel from the perspective of their cache.

I had gathered data on the reliability of the upload process before that point, and concluded that a fairly simple rotator script was completely adequate; without retry logic, I still had >99.98% reliability, which is the level I considered acceptable for the current iteration

It's worth noting that when I switched from reusing the same dozen pictures to rolling a new GIF every minute, that the error rate increased massively. We have had one day with 100% success, but the other three are a 99.8% day and two 99.2% days. The caching layer is doing a lot for Tumblr!

Other things worth noting:

1. When the rotator fails, this tends not to be a 4xx/5xx situation. The POST request silently 200s, and the subsequent (delayed) GET for verification reveals that the upload failed and the image is stale. I use a pHash metric to look for these and record these outcomes as failed.

2. Since then I have added retry logic to both the initialization of the client and the posting of the avatar images. One might say that I am a slouch for not having done this before, but my counterargument is that there is no need to pour one's time and energy into something that already Just Works; Demiurge knows that there are enough other Works to be completed.

3. I have added other ways for a person viewing the avatars to correct for a skipped upload, if they were so inclined
