fwiw I don’t agree with Ella Masar McLeod at all. the two (WoSo and MLS) are not comparable because the playing field has never been equal!! saying “we wouldn’t allow men in women’s soccer” doesn’t work because the whole point is the equality and power imbalance. Labbe chose a different route (one with few options as it is) to better her career. we should be pushing for Canada to establish their own league or have an NWSL team so development can get even better for canWNT. look what’s happened in Mexico and Spain for example. I also think it’s lame to glamorize sacrifices and compare her journey to Labbe’s because that’s such an individual personal thing (especially for Labbe who has been so open about her mental health struggles). we have players who retire early because it’s not worth it financially. we have players who work a job on the side to make ends meet. we have players who lived together in retirement communities just so they could afford housing. the Boston debacle. much like Press, Labbe had to find a way to become her best without staying in the NWSL. Labbe is an Olympic bronze medalist and it says a lot about WoSo that she’s achieved so much but still has very few options. what does that tell you about the imbalance? I don’t think it’s fair to expect any player to stay in an environment they don’t feel comfortable in and just stick it out and acting like Labbe is selling out women - I don’t think it’s fair to put that all on her. Labbe is not the problem. WoSo is definitely getting better but we should be more angry at the lack of options for women in football /also I get that Ella is always honest and I’ve always liked that about her, but it seems like a shitty thing to do considering Erin and Labbe are teammates and compete for the same job. at least wait until Labbe has had a few days to absorb it all
