Grant Chapman awoke in the morning as he normally did. Poured himself a cup of tea, he’d never been able to stomach coffee, and sat on his sofa. He sighed and sank into the corner. It was a Sunday so the post would be here soon. He leaned over to the side table, and picked up a book he’d been reading, or in his case trying to read. Remus had suggested it to him. He flipped to his bookmark, which really was just a small piece of paper he’d found on his floor. But just as he began to read, a knock at the door shook his small apartment. He stood up abruptly. He wasn’t expecting anyone, right? He placed his book back down and stood up, smoothing his shirt and fixing his hair, just in case it was the lanky brunette covered in scars who’d decided to make an appearance. He shuffled over and opened the squeaky brown door. His fantasies were quickly diminished when he saw a tall dark man standing out in the hall. “Are you Grant Chapman?” The man asked.
His hair was a dark shade of brown, but almost black. He had even darker eyes, that looked like they’d been through hell and back.
“Uh yes…that’s me, why?” Grant fiddled with his rings.
“I’m instructed to give this to you. It’s from a Mr. Lupin.”
“Remus?” Grant perked up, the hair on the back of his neck stood up. He shook the feeling away and took the letter.
The man nodded, and walked away, down the long, wooden hall. Grant watched him go. The man looked somber as he quickened his pace to the stairs.
Grant closed the door, and sat down to read the letter.
He picked at the dark red wax seal holding the folded parchment in place. He opened it and recognized the familiar penmanship.
I write to you because I know the circumstances of what I am about to do. So just in case, I have this letter to keep my affairs in order. If you are reading this, it means I’ve gone. I am no longer alive to sit and tell you this news. But on the opposing side, that means you are alive and well, which is, frankly, all that matters to me. Thank you for the kind words you’ve given me over the past many years. But this is the last you’ll ever hear of me. I’ve decided not to have a funeral, so I don’t cause any commotion with you and my friends. So I’ve decided you can have this, my estate. I know it isn’t much, but it’s far more than the drafty little place you call a home. Once again, thank you for everything, I hope to see you in another life. My one true friend.
