thank god this post is dying
Dyscalculia and every day life
I have had people tell me that Dyscalculia, a mathematics learning disability could not effect me much outside of the math classroom. This couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Here is a short list of the ways that it impacts my daily life:
Inability to correctly make change
Unable to correctly balance my check book
Repeatedly enters incorrect ATM PIN
Unable to tell time on an analog clock
Difficulty converting measurements when cooking
Inability to read a bus schedule
Trouble making it to appointments on time (usually always either late or early, never on time).
Feel free to reblog this and add to the list with your own experiences.
all of the above as well as:
unable to translate from the twelve hour system to the twenty-four hour system and back (1pm = 13 o’clock, 2pm = 14 o’clock what the fuck what t he fuck??)
difficulty driving a car (can’t apply the numbers on the signs to the numbers on the dashboard i.e. i have no idea if i’m speeding)
has to completely depend on a recipe to bake/cook because if someone tells me to eyeball it i will literally pour in two cups instead of two tablespoons there is no difference in my mind
difficulty driving a car (i shift gear but forget what gear i’m in literally one second later and i can’t shift gears without looking because i don’t know where they are on the gear shift because i don’t remember numbers)
can go to the same place a thousand times and still need someone to give me directions/use a map and even then the chances that i will understand the directions/the map are slim
difficulty driving a car (can’t apply the road signs on the actual world, a picture of a roundabout telling me where to go means nothing)
unable to differentiate between 100 and 60 because they both mean 100% (since 60 minutes = one hour then 60 cm = one meter right?? NO apparently not)
DIFFICULTY DRIVING A CAR the indicator goes either up or down for left or right how am i supposed to know which is which what the hell? i can’t estimate the distance between my own car and the car in front?? i can’t use the mirrors properly because i have no depth perception??? i can’t park because i have no spatial reasoning????
I CAN TALK ABOUT DRIVING FOR SEVEN DAYS AND I WOULDN’T RUN OUT OF THINGS TO SAY THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY THINGS
wait i have more:
literally the most basic one: inability to estimate the actual meaning of a number (someone tells me “this house is worth so and so much money can u believe it” and i’m like “is that a lot”)
inability to understand card games (sometimes the card represents another number than what is actually on the card, and many card games are based on knowing the order of numbers/knowing which number is bigger than the other)
difficulty reading segments of text with numbers in it (the sentence “eliza has 640 peas” sounds like “eliza has buzz-buzz peas” in my head and if i need to read out loud i will probably stop before saying the number, rereading it over and over again to make sure i get it right, and it might still come out as 406, 460 etc)
discomfort around mirrors (they distort the percieved depth of the room)
might have to touch walls if left to own devices (this sounds weird i know lmao, in a crowded room it’s fine because there are distractions, but if i’m alone and space out i will have no idea how far away the walls are and i might reach out just to check)
name/face retrieval is at zero, might replace names with ones i think fit into the same category and/or begin with the same letter.

sometimes i think about laverne cox and then i have to lie down for a minute.
“there are no trigger warnings in real life” aka “your mental health is less important than me being allowed to talk shit and i refuse to do literally the least thing to make you comfortable”
lms if u hate how fragile your mortal flesh prison is
but if you pull out some of your hair when you’re fifteen… and then you wait for a few years… and then you put it in some polyjuice… the person drinking it would look like your fifteen year old self… why was this possibility not explored in the books
AND YOU COULD LOOK LIKE YOUR FIFTEEN YEAR OLD SELF??? like the reason your own polyjuice wouldn’t work on you is because you’d look exactly the same so there would be no point but it could make you look like a younger version of you. this is beyond exciting to me. why didn’t i write harry potter.

katniss is such a good character like there is no doubt in my mind that shes one of the best protagonists to be presented to an audience like especially to other young girls but its weird that the book basically clearly says ‘she is a disabled aromantic native american woman with ptsd’ and the movie is like yes clearly we can ignore literally all of that
i’m back at my old url
