The Magic Multiverse has its own school of Magic at Strixhaven with plenty of secrets still to explore. Our Universes Beyond roadmap currently doesn’t have us visiting any others.

ok so i see a lot of people being all doom and gloom about the "currently" in this statement, so i think it's important to note that this post does not directly mention Harry Potter, so that "currently" is likely included to allow other magic schools. the UB not in standard promise was changed because it was profitable, and i doubt a HP set would be very profitable. Maro has also been very staunch on keeping Magic inclusive, so i don't think something like a HP set will happen.

tldr: Harry Potter not happening, and the wording is probably a legal thing.

With all of the threats to the worlds like Tarkir or Mirrodin or the War of the Spark, wouldn't it be prudent to NOT include anything about race/gender/identity? Nobody was worried about their own gender during WWII because they were worried about survival. I feel it cheapens the threats that characters like Bolas or the Eldrazi present when you stick identity politics like Daretti or Ashiok because those characters seem more occupied with identity than with saving the day.

If you think no one was worried about their gender in World War II, that simply means you’re unaware of history. People will literally put in concentration camps and killed because of it.

People in the comments have touched on this, but WW2 was literally all about these things. The Nazi's burned down and destroyed an institute of gender and sexuality, erased its research, blamed "deviant" behavior, put queer people in the camps, blamed a group (Jews) for all of the country's problems based on their identity and killed 6 million of them, put the Roma in camps for their identity and killed hundreds of thousands of them, and also but purple with physical and mental disabilities in the camps and performed eugenics on all of these groups.

But even if we ignore the Nazis, similar things were happening all over the world. Race was a big issue in the US at the time, there was discrimination both in recruiting and in the military, there was massive backlash to Black people serving that led to them being denied benefits and to an increase in segregation afterwards (you can see this in how the French treated them vs the US) and anti-Black discrimination was something people who wanted to destabilize the US specifically stoked. Queer people obviously had to be closeted (and in Britain queerphobia and eugenics killed Alan Turing after the war), and eugenics were a big thing in the US based on Race, queerness, and disability.

And if we're to touch on fiction, Steve Rogers (Captain America) was literally rejected from serving in the military BECAUSE he was disabled, something that happened regularly in real life and was being discussed even back then. All of these things were not only big deals back then, and not something the war papered over, but they were all pointed out as big deals and discussed by people as such.

Im really torn between the fact that my favorite set of all time Will be seeing the light of the day again ( lorwyn) and my gut feelings of how It Will be fucked up by the new superbland mediocre art style and the real world politic agenda ( not so) subtly pushed in late sets, in a CARD GAME. We want to see stories of faeries, kithkins, elves, goblins, Giants,merfolk and cinders in their beautiful fantasy setting, no trans they/them faeries that think they're kithkins

Two points:

1) When returning to a world, we’re very cognizant of the aesthetic of the world. We understand returning to Lorwyn requires embracing what made people love it the first time around. Obviously, there will be updates, as the game has evolved much since our first visit, but we’re very aware of the need to recapture the plane’s essence.

2) For far too long, fantasy, as a genre, was used as a way to reflect the worldview of those in power. It leaned into stereotype and reflected how the privileged wished the world was. Modern fantasy is more reflective of the actual world, which includes the wide variety of life experiences that exists.

Trans people, people of color, and women playing a larger role, are all part of modern fantasy because they’re all part of the actual world, and it’s important that our stories and world building be reflective of that.

“I want to return to a time where we could ignore the existence of certain elements because I was happy living in that ignorance” is not an excuse to deny real people and their real life experiences.

Entertainment is at its best when it lifts everyone up and isn’t used as yet another means to ignore certain people’s reality.

Hi Mark, you have been so long with wizards, have you ever thought of leaving, and giving your mantle to younger minds.

if you do, please do not give it to a woke mind.

You do understand that "woke" just means thinks and cares about others. I sincerely hope my predecessor is "woke". I want them to think about how their design decisions affects everyone.

That said, I have no current plans of retiring, but sure one day. There are many talented designers I can hand off my mantle to.
