ok, i went and found pyro's statement from discord and i have concerns.

first, we're starting right off the bat we have proof that what people were worried about is correct: people are already finding fans to out to pyro. so you are going to have this fandom become a panopticon where keeping track of your fellow fans to turn them in is normal. and i would hope i don't have to explain why this is a bad thing.

second, he didn't back down on the wording at all. even if he doesn't mean to cause harassment, that's exactly what's going to happen (see above). fans are basically being rewarded for turning other fans in and the threats that he made which sparked harassment already still stand.

the whole issue is that instead of taking a reasonable stance on the issue that people like cleo have done, he's creating an environment that sews distrust among fans. because of not understanding what a boundary is. it is absolutely more than fair to block people you come across who are making you uncomfortable. it's fine to ask people not to do something with the understanding that if they do, you'll block them.

it's just not ok to spur this kind of attitude in fandom spaces while also not doing anything to keep yourself away from things you dislike, like blacklisting and blocking certain tags.

they (pyro) had me in the first half, not gonna lie. the first two paragraphs are almost exactly what i've been saying. but he then proceeds to say "still not gonna make a dni tag tho <3" the entitlement to think that everyone should just stop making art you don't like is insane.

"I know I can't stop people from doing stuff, that's impossible and also unreasonable."

and

"there won't be witch hunts"

but I'm not gonna make a dni tag because I don't think that people should be able to make art that I don't like in a space (tumblr) that i'm in, because they shouldn't be making it in the first place!

like, pyro you JUST said that controlling what people do is impossible and yet you're trying anyways.

tldr: basically, nothing has changed. Pyro's mods and fans are still gonna rat you out and get you banned weather you try to make sure pyro doesn't see anything that makes him uncomfortable or not.<3

Jax literally killed himself in the circus after making the other two openly queer people around him - a nonbinary person and a non-straight woman - the targets of some of the worst of his externalized self hatred and queerphobia.

But in real life, in the physical world, she's at Riley's bar. She's surrounded by other queer people. He killed himself but she's alive in a place hosted by the nonbinary person he resented. She has the community of other queer people that he rejected.

I wonder if Goose meant anything by this.

At the end of the day, the discourse seems to be less about people not respecting pyro's boundaries, and more about how pyro plans to "enforce" his boundaries. Shelby also has boundaries that she wants people to take into account, and if someone posts something that breaks her boundaries, she blocks them, bans them from her spaces and moves on. not whatever the hell it is pyro is doing.

people should be free to write, draw, create, etc whatever they want. and if the ccs find it and don't like it, they can block, and move on. just like if I see a fic on ao3 that I don't like while browsing a ship tag, I ignore it. If I see more by the same author, I block the author and keep scrolling.

bottom line is: ccs can't control you, so do whatever you want. but if you are knowingly breaking their boundaries, be prepared to face the consequences. (getting blocked/banned from their spaces) And if someone is harassing you for the type of art you make, report them, block them, maybe tell your friends who make the same kinds of things to be wary of them, and keep doing what you love.
