trying to get into editing because i have some fuckin ideas let me tell you what

i’m a temporarily embarrassed illustrator/graphic designer also but mainly i’m just infected with posters brain!

i think it’s interesting to think of Jay as having been a bit of a savant as a kid and that leading to a disregard (or lack of care) for his emotional experience or the way he behaves. this kid is most likely going to be an accomplished piano player, it doesn’t matter if he’s socially awkward. most geniuses are. autistic people who aren’t particularly “gifted” in the way Jay is (and there are a lot of us) have to make ourselves socially useful because we’re not necessarily expected to accomplish great things. this is also the baggage around autism diagnoses in general because there’s the stereotype of an autistic person (usually a boy) who’s unaware of social cues but excels in one skill. unfortunately the interiority of the autistic savant isn’t considered and they aren’t encouraged to develop healthy emotional skillsets, leading to burnout and difficulty regulating emotions as adults…

Guys. Jay's autistic inability to follow conversation, to parse and appropriately answer questions, or to modulate his facial expressions while he does so does not make him stupid, it just makes him autistic and bad at masking. I'm so for real right now, but I think so much of the difference between the skills Matt has developed to publicly mask and deal with his autism and Jay's lack of skill has to do with the fact that people are so much more forgiving of your lack of social graces if you're good looking. You get the assumption of good intent; people want you to like them; they will do the work to make it easier for you to be near them because they want the good looking person to like them, because there's this perception that having a good looking person like you confers their social worth upon you. Jay has spent his entire life being considered conventionally good looking. Matt has specifically and vocally not. Matt has had to develop these social skills because he's had to talk himself in and out of positive social regard. Matt is also autistic he's just learned how to mask!!! That doesn't make him smarter, he just has a different skill set!!!!!

AND THIS IS BETWEEN TWO CIS STRAIGHT WHITE MEN. THIS IS HOW YOU TREAT AND PERCEIVE CIS STRAIGHT WHITE MEN. GOD FORBID YOU'RE IN ANY OTHER MARGINALIZED DEMOGRAPHIC.

#hope you don’t mind me reblogging this is so interesting #and such a good insight #i can come off as an airhead sometimes but it’s genuinely because i’m struggling to process information #and i’m also someone who masks a lot! and had learned most important social skills #so like. being unable to keep concentration or process bits of auditory information can also be a persistent trait that’s difficult to mask

oooh jay loves compliments so much because he never learned how to value himself in any meaningful way outside of them and has no sense of intrinsic value whatsoever. being complimented on superficial things outside of his control imbues a sense of value that is not dependent on any factor that he would ever have to actually work for therefore validating his inability to ever create meaningful change within himself or his life while also reinforcing that he doesn't have to achieve anything outside of this value to still be praiseworthy and pleasing! good morning!

going to be a bit sincere for a second but my mattjay playlist is verrrry populated with 2000s-2010s indie rock of the r/indieheads variety because it’s music i latched onto as an identity formation thing when i was a young teenager. as a consequence, i’m delusional primed to believe that every other freckle by alt-j is the most romantic song ever recorded. if you really think that you can stomach ME! and etc.
