i'd say generally i dont do warmups or exercises unless im really doing a piss poor job of whatever it is im drawing (i only have so much energy so even though its not best practice i must pick my battles). obviously mileage and exercises will help (LINE CONFIDENCE AND ECONOMY ARE VERY IMPORTANT!!! but i cant really tell you how to build confidence beyond just learning your tools, studying primitive shapes and not being afraid to fuck up. it takes time)

i would recommend getting used to changing your brush sizes regularly, my general process at the moment is as follows >smallest size possible for gestural sketch (0.7px on csp) >move up a few sizes (generally 2.5px) while you block in the details >thicker brushes as you move into defining the larger shapes and drawing the eye (thicker linework for things you want the viewer to regard first) generally i go up to 7px then maybe 14px, then i finish off with an outline auto action or do my bold outlines manually

you mostly dont need to fuck around with layers- w this sketching method you can do everything on the one layer ( ppl will ignore verysmall brushstrokes unless theyre extremely messy). same principle with my clean lineart i just skip the gestural step and have the line smoothing cranked up slightly

some thoughts: many artists think you can get line variation thats 'good enough' with a brush thats one size and has a steep pressure curve-- generally i find this creates very wonky looking linework with less obvious intention behind it, and the steep pressure curve makes smooth, consistent lines a bit of a business (obviously ppl can work however they want i just have my aesthetic preferences)

- anime became a large production outlet post WW2 due to america ripping away japan's imperial military, and a lot of work went into entertainment catered to and heavily influenced by western threat. Anime was in fact, originally inspired by old western cartoons such as disney.

- Ramen (originated in china, actually) but became popular as a japanese staple is a post WW2 food because America bombed japan so much they didn't have much rice anymore so they supplemented japan with wheat. A food that was popularized from western threat and intervention.

Your love of japan if based off these things is entirely a japan that has been changed (forcibly) from the western imperial core. Of course westerners LOOOOVE japan after they were forced to kiss western asses and change themselves to be more like westerners.

The Japanese still made the choice to be an imperialist country and it still is their fault they did that and need to take responsibility for their asian neighbors. but to act like it wasn't a heavily funneled by western colonial powers to make the japanese extremely ashamed of their own way of being to mass westernize (Western colonial powers made the japanese feel primitive and frugal) Pressured the japanese to westernize rapidly, which demanded a massive amount of resources, which lead to colonization. No they didn't have to do that. No they could have chosen to all get shot if they didn't change their politics (Yes they were threatened to change their politics through threat of violence)

To act like japan is the worst colonial power is incorrect and to act like the japanese are worse than white colonial powers is not only racist but also incorrect. The japanese need to be held accountable for their actions they took in the end, but for the western imperial core to act like japan inhernelty to their humanity decided to become imperialist is insane. Japan also is not imperialist anymore, and America and europe still are, after the bombing. America had near full control over Japan's imperial status and japan even ceased their imperial military because America can out violence them and you're saying the japanese are the worst imperialists in the world. Yeah. Worst at being imperial maybe, the OGs still stand and are still doing their thing.

To see the japanese as a whole as cartoon villains who just Decided suddenly to westernize and become a world power for no major reason in 1860s is oversimplification and becomes problematic especially coming from a viewpoint of the western imperial core.
