The author formerly known as sprucewoodcottage, as well as various other pseuds. I've been writing fanfic for around two decades. I started writing MCYT in 2019 with Hermitcraft, but these days I mostly play with The Realm and Lifesteal.

I'm a big believer in the three laws of fandom: don't like, don't read; your kink is not my kink (and that's okay); and ship and let ship. Don't bring boundaries discourse onto my doorstep.

I tag servers, characters, relationships, and fanwork type as applicable. I don't use duo names, so relationships will be under a ship tag whether they are romantic or platonic.

Posts involving graphic sexual content will be tagged #scw. If you're under the age of 18, then please do me a big favor and do not interact with those posts.

3. What is the most amount of research you’ve done for the smallest detail? What was the detail and how much time/effort went into researching it?

I once researched what colonial era kitchens would've looked like for one passing mention of a character hearing the sounds coming from within. I really struggled to find sources on this so I sunk a lot of time into it before I finally convinced myself that it was fine and chill if it wasn't accurate.

More recently I spent several hours researching Brazilian spirits for a character that doesn't even drink alcohol.

5. Is there a tiny detail in one of your fics that you feel goes tragically unnoticed?

I don't know if I'd call it tragic, but whenever I want to convey that something increased or grew by a large amount I use "sevenfold" instead of a more conventional "tenfold" as a reference to one of Doc's lines in Hermitgang. I imagine using an oddball specific amount does probably strike people as peculiar, but I don't know if anyone has ever made that connection, especially the further away from Hermitcraft S6 we get.

8. Is there a story idea you have that you would love if it could appear fully realized but that you do not think you’ll ever write yourself?

Ugh, so many. I have more ideas than I do free time and energy to make them become reality.

10. If you could banish a single trope to live at the bottom of the ocean, never to be seen again by any human eyes (or at least your own), which trope would that be?

I've been reading a lot of fic for a fandom that's really into isekai right now, and it's not so much that I dislike isekai as it is that nobody is doing anything interesting enough with it to justify why there's like ten billion new fics every day with isekai as the premise. At this point they're all just cheap imitations of the first handful of isekai fics that appeared in this fandom, and most of them are not doing it better than the originals.

20. Is there anything about any one of your fics that you have been dying to discuss but haven’t had the chance to?

There's a lot of worldbuilding that I've put into so many of my fics and AUs that I haven't gotten to talk about much because I haven't written the damn fics yet. One of my favorite parts of writing Lifesteal AUs is figuring out "what is Lifesteal?" for each new setting.

Like, for example, in Infamia, Lifesteal, or Gabitul here, is a loose coalition of nations to the north of Remalthe, basically acting analogous to Rome's Gaul. Since Infamia has aspects of magic and mythology in it, the actual Lifesteal effect is a magical property of the land itself that extends a person's life a certain amount that was 'stolen' from someone who suffered a premature death if they consume the body. Everything else after that is cultural customs of the people that inhabit the land. It's considered a grave insult to not consume the body of someone you've killed. You're basically saying that their life is worthless to you, that you'd rather waste it than add it to your own. It's also frowned upon to eat someone else's kill, since you didn't earn that stolen life yourself. People outside of Gabitul don't really know if the life stealing magic is real or how it works, and the Gabitul like it that way because they don't really want people trying to colonize the land and desecrate their customs in pursuit of longevity.

For The Freak Circus crossover, I'm thinking of going with a simple underground killing game that some assassins and hitmen and other unsavory types play. It makes Lifesteal like a side gig for Clown that he can dip in and out of wherever he's currently located, as long as there's other participants nearby. I don't know yet if the actual Life Stealing part of Lifesteal will be relevant, but it's not off the table since there's lots of other magical Stuff I've left in the setting.
