Geoff smiled at the short ramble coming from the other King, his eyes unable to leave Ray. He looked almost flustered and that was enough to have the older smiling a little wider because it was his fault and he didn’t get the chance to do that all too often. Or at least… not with anyone he actually felt anything for anyway.
“ No, no. Not even close to making a fool of yourself. I’m sure you’ve seen me get a little… over-indulged when it comes to drinking. No one knows how to make a fool of oneself better than I do. ”
The King was beaming as he mused, although he dialed it back to just a gentle smile and he tipped his head aside in thought.
“ I’d probably be a little bolder or at least a lot more forward and careless if we weren’t allies, but… – What are your thoughts? I wouldn’t be against doing anything with this if you wanted to as well. Even if it be kept between us since I feel like the councils wouldn’t be too pleased. ”
The young king listened to him, taking the moment to calm and to fully process that Geoff did indeed return these feelings for him. But they were still kings, and unfortunately it would make things a little difficult.
Ray sighed, “We could keep this secret, to letters and visits to one another disguised as official matters. We could have the official matters, of course, and then just have more time together overall. Whether or not to tell our council, though, is what I’m concerned with. Because even then, if they found out, what would they do?”
He glanced down, turning to look out to the rest of the gardens. “Call me young and naive and call you a fool, maybe. No offense.”

[ ] Chaotic Evil

As much as he didn’t want to admit it, the young King had a point. The reason the court was so insistent on marrying them off wasn’t merely for appearances – They needed someone to eventually inherit the throne. Although that wasn’t how all Kings came to be, it was tradition and that was how many kingdoms operated. Geoff wasn’t young by any means, which was why his own court still put pressure on him to marry.
He just wasn’t interested in marrying some princess or noble girl for the sake of hopefully having a son.
“ You make a good argument. I suppose I never thought of it that way. ”
A sigh left him and Geoff slowly took a step back and away from Ray, although he nodded quickly in response to the King’s questioning.
“ I’m not joking with you though, no. And I don’t want you to think that I would expect you to return the same thoughts for an old king. There’s just.. I don’t know. You were always different than the rest; Not boring. Held my interest a hell of a lot better than most. ”
“I’m flattered. Honored, even, that you would think of me that way. Now to say that I’ve had this sort of feeling for you doesn’t feel so awkward.”
Another weak chuckle came out from him, smiling softly at Geoff, bowing his head. “We can always continue to ignore the constant push of the suitors if they consider us nothing more as allies.” He paused, “Unless, of course, I mean-if you- if you wanted to do anything with this, again I’m probably blowing this way out of proportion and chances are I probably am and am currently making a fool of myself in front of a man I admire?”
He ran on and on and morphed it into a question somehow, looking away, rubbing the back of his neck.
Of course, Geoff didn’t want to overstep his boundaries. If Ray wasn’t an allied King, maybe he’d be a little less cautious, but the last thing he needed was to say the wrong thing and tarnish their relations all because he might have admired the King from afar. A hand moved to rub at the back of his own neck and he smiled slightly while watching Ray adjust his crown.
“ Forgive me if that was too… forward. It’s not often I get the opportunity to admit anything like that, so I saw the chance and took it. ”
As blue hues looked back in Ray’s direction, Geoff couldn’t help but reach over to straighten the other’s laurel, careful of the delicate petals as he moved it. He was still standing close as his arms fell back to his sides; close enough to pick up on the faint flush to the other King’s cheeks.
“ I don’t see why we can’t just choose our own suitors. ”
“Oh, no, your majesty it’s perfectly fine I just... didn’t expect that sort of an answer?” Ray chuckled weakly, glancing down but back up as he noticed Geoff was closer to him, fixing is rose crown for him.
For some reason that just made the blush more apparent.
“I could mention it to them, that I’ve found someone, but, then again, the someone is not only male, but a king,” he shrugged, “Not exactly prime suitor material, to continue a lineage. Which is strange, since I wasn’t a king out of lineage to begin with.”
The young king sighed, “But, you’re... serious. You’ve thought of me in this way? You’re not just trying to joke with me, right?”
Geoff’s eyes traveled to the rose bush that seemed to have gained Ray’s attention, but soon shot back to the younger King as he spoke. He wasn’t… Was he? Was he actually alluding to him or to one of the other neighboring Kings? His ego wanted him to believe that it was him, but assuming often got him into trouble.
He realized he was probably staring wide-eyed at Ray for a little too long once their gazes had met and he cleared his throat, eyes jumping down as an almost bashful chuckle echoed from him.
“ I… I must say that I do know the feeling. The court’s always looking for a union that would join power, but hardly do they ever look to allied available Kings… ”
The response was vague at best to save himself from embarrassment if he was jumping to conclusions, but there was a nagging voice in the back of his head that urged him to elaborate a little.
“ Found myself wishing they’d look into this… younger King who seems to have this odd obsession with roses or something. ”
“Hm,” a simple hum of acknowledgement left him, shrugging. “Well, when one thinks of a suitor for a king, they do think of females, at least with my luck.”
He glanced out to the gardens, then looked back to Geoff with a sense of curiosity. What did he mean, exactly, by available kings? There were a few, that he knew of, that were without a lover. And him, but, was it?
The last comment from the older king made him blink back, relieved that the lamp post light was dim enough so that the sudden blush that tinged his face wouldn’t be apparent. “...is, is that so?” He managed out, keeping his composure, straightening his back and fixing the laurel crown of roses on his head.
“ Oh my god. ”
Geoff was laughing despite the poor girl’s misfortune, but to think that Ray would actually give up his gardens for a princess was absolutely absurd. He’d been there though – His own court often pushed him to marry and stressed that it would better his image but… he’d just never been happy with their choice of suitors.
“ It makes perfect sense, really. I wish I knew where they found these ‘suitable’ choices because they’re almost always wrong. You’d think after years of pushing, they’d at least try to learn our tastes. Is the lack of interest in settling down or just the suitors chosen? Surely there’s got to be someone you’ve shown interest in since becoming King. ”
He laughed softly with the older king, shaking his head in amusement as his attention was out to the gardens.
“I’m not a difficult person to please, and yet they find the types I just don’t find anything with, and are really only there to gain status. And that’s just... not what I’m looking for, at all.”
Ray sighed, and was silent at Geoff’s query. He expected it to be asked, and knew the answer. It was just how to answer it that was the hard part. A moment more to think it over, before his attention was set on a rose in one of the bushes beside them.
“...well,” he began, eyes still on the rose. “It’s difficult to mention to your court that the person you admire is... also a king.” Ray looked up to Geoff the moment the sentence ended. Expecting the worse.
Geoff was casually strolling, his eyes taking in the flowers they passed, but still paid special attention to the roses Ray kept. It was his trademark after all and there was always true beauty in the younger King’s kingdom than his own. It just made his visits that more memorable if he was being honest, but his attention was drawn away at the question and he found himself raising his brows.
“ If I’m being honest, it still happens. Maybe not as much as it had when I had first taken the throne, but it’s… a common priority of the court. Have they started lining up potential suitors for you yet? ”
Ray sighed, nodding. “That time of the year. Last year it felt pretty close, however the princess had... quite a bad allergic reaction to the roses we didn’t know of until she was practically suffocating to death. It was either get rid of the gardens or her. Priorities, right?”
He chuckled softly, looking to Geoff, then to the roses around them. “Now they try again, but to say that I’ve just no interest would go ignored. Their choices just... don’t seem to hold interest to me. If that makes sense.”

Nodding, Geoff was quick to follow after Ray after he had excused them. Personal discussions or not, it wasn’t like the man could say no to a walk through the King’s gardens anyway. There was something about them that had always impressed him – Whatever that was remained to be seen. Still, the King cleared his throat and clasped his hands together as his eyes found Ray once more.
“ I understand, of course. No reason why they should have to overhear all of your discussions, especially the personal ones. It’s also nice being about to sneak away without someone constantly watching over you. Was there… something in particular you wanted to speak to me about? ”
“Always,” he agreed, walking down the hall, bowing his head to the guards as they opened the door to one of the many entries to the gardens. At night, the vivid greens and reds and whites and purples of the roses and other flowers were muted under the low light of the posts, the pedals and leaves catching some of the glow.
“Were you,” he began, his steps pausing, glancing to the older king. “I assume when you were younger, but were you ever... hassled by your court to gain a suitor?”
“Would you like to move this conversation someplace more private?” (kingverse /rolls)

The reason for Geoff’s visit was purely to check in on the young King. It was a welcomed change of pace since he couldn’t remember the last time he’d traveled to an allied kingdom other than to deal with distressing matters, so of course an amused smirk took shape after hearing Ray’s question.
“ I was about to ask if it was only so you could sneak away from your court and council or if you’re actually trying to get me alone. Then I realized I didn’t care, so yes. I would. ”
The young king chuckled at the other’s answer, standing from his seat, speaking idly to his court that he and Geoff were going to take a walk through the gardens and excused himself and his royal guest.
“Our conversation was kept quiet enough,” he replied, walking with the older king. “I just get... concerned with others around me when I feel something is going in a personal direction, I’m sure you understand.”
In all of my life, I have never known such a man with more compassion, more humility and more patience than I have with you, my King. Your generosity knows no bounds and you care so much for me and your people. Soon to be our people. I love you, Ray. And no tyrant king can ever take that away from me. ~Your Prince
Oh, Jack...
I swear to the Gods you talking that way always does make me blush.

“I’m sorry to hear that, Your Majesty. While I’m normally against executions, it can depend on the crime. If they violated human life, well, by your rule it seems they rightfully deserved it. Will they be okay?” He paused for a moment, looking over Geoff. “Will.. you be okay?”
“The ones I, my men, were able to save should be okay after a while. I have promised housing and food for them for a while until they are able to go back to their families. Also, protection is a big deal.” Ruffling his hair, Geoff nodded a bit. “I will be, but I just need to be sure things are okay everywhere. I hate having to invade my people’s privacy, but I want to be positive that no more of this is going on. Of course, only people that are suspect.”
The young king smiled softly, “I would do the same thing. To make sure they’re okay before they returned to their families and homes. As far as I’m aware, though, my kingdom hasn’t had an issue like that. That, or the nobles are lying to me.” He hummed in thought.
“You’re simply being careful, I’m sure they understand.”
“I just want to be sure that they are okay. Well, as okay as they can be. I’m sure it will be hard to get the horrors of being there out of the mind.” Geoff nodded and looked down. “I still feel horrible for doing it. I just don’t want to lose anymore people to a horrible crime.”
The young king moved closer to Geoff, and set a careful hand on his shoulder. “You freed them, in more ways than one. I hope they see that. I’m... I’m not sure what else could be offered to them? Again, this is something I barely practice myself, as far as executions.”
