Whenever I see a Ravenclaw Wampus person’s interpretation of their house combination (it’s mine as well), it seems that they always take it more metaphorically than literally. They are quick to proclaim that they are Ravenclaw through and through, that Wampus detracts from that understanding, and that they were never physical nor bold. Initially when I was sorted into Wampus I was quite surprised, I guessed that I would be in Thunderbird—especially because that seems to be a really common Ilvermorny house for Ravenclaws. However, the more I thought about it, the more I knew Wampus truly fit me.

I’m a Ravenclaw to the core: I value intelligence, wit, creativity, individuality, and a thirst for knowledge well above other traits. Being successful academically has always been a hallmark of my personality, and I’ve been a proud sporter of the blue and bronze since day one. I took the original Pottermore sorting quiz back in the day and got Ravenclaw, and when the site was rehauled I took it again to the same effect. I knew I belonged.

Something has always bothered me though, people believe that Ravenclaws are exclusively bookwormish, anti-social, and inactive. I see so many posts about Ravenclaws being shy and hesitant, more reserved and introverted than the other houses—often times from Ravenclaws themselves. This never aligned with me. I loved playing multiple sports growing up, I adore training in various disciplines of combat, and I love nothing more than to spar with friends with my dueling lightsaber. I hit the gym daily. I’ve always been an extremely forward and extroverted person, quick to volunteer for an adventure. I felt like these things set me apart from the archetypal Ravenclaw, however, I could not personally be farther from Gryffindor traits, the house where physicality is generally assumed to belong.

I felt somewhat alientated in this way, but when I was sorted in Wampus, it all made perfect sense to me. Wampus is the house of warriors and favors the body, traits that are NEVER associated with Ravenclaws. This combination truly embodies my duality, a wise warrior who is as eager to pick up a book as I am to pick up a sword. I realized that a true Ravenclaw would embrace the differences that set them apart even from the stereotypes of their own house, and so I have. I am enormously proud to be a Wampus, but I’m even more excited to say that my combination of both comes together to offer a nuanced view of who I am.

I think many people consider their Ilvermorny house to either affirm or disprove their belonging to their Hogwarts house, an idea people should discard. Think of your Ilvermorny house as an extension of yourself, another layer to who you are, rather than confirmation that you belong to your original house at Hogwarts. Embrace all parts of you, and you will achieve self acceptance. Go Ravenclaw Wampuses!!
