Domesticated Hunters
I. Ranaida The wolf rips through her fur at night when the hunt demands her call. Day breaks, and she is fighting tooth and nail for a run across the field— ignoring cars, neighbors, fellow dogs with children. She tugs at her leash and the owner tugs with her, a struggle for dominance she believes is hers and hers alone.
II. Beau Fangs bear only when yawning in the summer heat. Black fur of his ancestors shed in clumps, while he paws the beetles near his tail. He is rewarded when he hears his master’s call. The wild embedded in his flesh stirs when he yips, snarls when he is donned the title of good. The fields snap with kites and squirrels. The hunt within him lashes out; he ignores the natural response for measly treats.
