Lead poisoning - a serious environmental health issue caused by elevated levels of lead in the blood, affecting both children and adults, with a higher incidence in children.
Also known as: Saturnism, plumbism, painter’s colic
Anatomy or system affected: Brain, circulatory system, endocrine system, musculoskeletal system, nervous system, reproductive system
Symptoms of lead poisoning and lead intoxication vary because of differences in individual susceptibility, and the severity of symptoms increases with increased exposure.
Symptoms of mild lead toxicity include:
abdominal discomfort,
fatigue,
muscle pain, or
paresthesia.
Moderate toxicity is indicated by:
arthralgia,
tremor,
fatigue,
difficulty concentrating,
headache,
abdominal pain,
vomiting,
weight loss, and
constipation.
Severe toxicity symptoms include:
paresis or paralysis,
encephalopathy,
seizures,
severe abdominal cramps,
hearing loss,
changes in consciousness, and
coma.
Etiology of Lead Poisoning
Leaded paint was commonly used in the United States until 1960, used to some degree until the early 1970s, and mostly eliminated in 1978.
Thus, for a significant number of older housing units, leaded paint still poses some hazard.
Lead poisoning is usually caused by direct ingestion of leaded paint chips (from cracked, peeling paint).
During home remodeling, patients may be exposed to significant amounts of aerosolized lead in the form of particles scraped or sanded off during surface preparation for repainting.
Some ceramic glazes contain lead.
Ceramic ware (eg, pitchers, cups, plates) that is made with these glazes (common outside the United States) can leach lead, particularly when in contact with acidic substances (eg, fruits, cola drinks, tomatoes, wine, cider).
Lead-contaminated moonshine whiskey and folk remedies are possible sources, as are occasional lead foreign objects in the stomach or tissues (eg, bullets, curtain or fishing weights).
Bullets lodged in soft tissues near synovial fluid or cerebrospinal fluid may increase blood lead levels, but that process takes years.
Occupational exposure can occur during battery manufacture and recycling, bronzing, brass making, glass making, pipe cutting, soldering and welding, smelting, or working with pottery or pigments.
Certain ethnic cosmetic products and imported herbal products and medicinal herbs contain lead and have caused cluster outbreaks of lead poisoning in immigrant communities.
Fumes of leaded gasoline (in countries other than the United States) recreationally inhaled for central nervous system effects may cause lead poisoning.
Eating or breathing in dust from lead-based paint that is crumbling is the most common cause of lead poisoning in children.
Other sources of lead poisoning include:
Dust and soil tainted with lead from old paint
Dust and soil tainted with lead from leaded gasoline
Tap water in homes that have lead pipes
Paint and dust chips from old toys, furniture, and pottery glazes
In early 2005, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission started a new policy for lead in children’s metal jewelry. Some children who swallowed or sucked on jewelry with lead had high blood lead levels. Since 2004, the Commission has recalled over 150 million pieces of toy jewelry. This jewelry was sold in vending machines and other outlets.
Treatment
Before treatment, the high blood lead level (BLL) will be confirmed by repeat blood testing.
Because there is no safe blood lead level, medical action is advised in all children with BLLs greater than the U.S. reference value. The urgency, type, timing, and setting for the medical treatment will vary and depends on the severity of the lead poisoning.
People with lead poisoning may be given medicine. This medicine binds with the lead. This lets it pass out of the body in the urine.
With mild poisoning, the medicine is given by mouth. With more severe poisoning, the medicine is given by an IV (intravenous) line into a vein.
Medicines that get rid of the lead can also get rid of important minerals. Diet supplements may be given to replace these minerals.
Other children and family members at risk for lead poisoning will be screened and, if needed, treated.
After treating the person with lead poisoning, lead from the person’s environment is found and removed. A public health authority will help with this.
The type of follow-up care needed will be determined by the original BLL.
Watching the orange, red, and blue flames against the night sky was soothing to the guitarist, who leaned against the bassist from across the pond. “I love you.”
“Love you too Ads.” Justin used the tips of his fingers to comb through Adams' long ebony hair.
Adam reached over to do the same but got caught on the brunette's tangled curls. “You need to take better care of your hair. Justin shrugged in response. “Then let me take care of your mane.”
“Alright.” Justin watched the waves push and pull the sand along with several seashells, floating in the foam.
“You’re a creature of the night now?” Justin asked.
“I’ve always been a creature of the night,” Adam replied, running his tongue over his new fangs. “It’s just now the giant ball of fire in the sky hates vampires.
“Can you eat human food?”
“Rare meat; everything else tastes like ass and comes right back up. Can’t drink, but can smoke weed. “
“Wot?”
“I don’t know, ya know?” Adam pressed his forehead against the others. “You’re a werewolf now?”
“Yes. It’s a bit odd having a tail and pointy ears.”
“It’s cute during the day and fucking sexy at night.”
“You’re the Fruit Loops to my Cocoa Puffs.” Kirk grinned as they waited in line to show their tickets to the ticket master.
“We’re at a focking festival, and you are talking dirty to me?” Lars asked.
“No, James just texted me that on 'Family Fued' the question was, if you were a male stripper with the name of a cereal, what would it be?”
“Why am I the Fruit Loop?” Lars asked with fake offence. “Your balls are way bigger than a Cocoa Puff.” Lars shook his head. “My stripper name would not be Fruit Loop.”
“Then what would it be?”
“ Giant Grape Nuts.”
“But you have giant nuts but no grapes.”
“No grapes that you know of.”
“What does that mean?” Kirk tilted his head, like a puppy hearing a new sound.
“I don’t know.” Lars shrugged.
“Okay, they you are my cheerio.” Kirk nodded, curls bouncing.
“Honey NUT cheerio!” Lars pushed his hips out to the other.
“The line is really long; want to go back to the car? I know you’re turned on.”
“Yes, and we are playing stripper tonight arnt we?” Lars had already left the line and headed toward their car.
“First one to the car is the top.” Kirk started running.
