Getting a weird little hobby is actually so important bc it opens your eyes up to the world. You start crocheting or knitting, and now you see scarves and sweaters differently. You try identifying plants, now you’re seeing opposite and alternate leaf pattern. Bird watching? Every chirp draws attention and interest.

I don't think we give Jonathan Harker nearly enough credit for his absolutely unhinged choices. In 1897, that pathetic wet cat of a man was written with enough grit, willpower, and raw human stupidity to rival any of our modern horror podcast protagonists. When faced with a centuries-old vampire, in a coffin, drenched in fresh blood, he really thought the best thing to do was to hit it in the face WITH A SHOVEL. The audacity. The misplaced confidence. The sheer desperation. No plan. No hesitation. Running on fear and spite alone. And i fucking love him for it. Truly the character of all time.

Funny, I hate nearly everyone in Wuthering Heights EXCEPT Nelly Dean. I wish she'd advertise and find better employers than all those self-absorbed twits and violent maniacs she puts up with.
In fairness, Nelly is not a heroine or a great person. But I feel people so often act like she's bad because she has a moral duty to fix these people's problems and sacrifice herself for them? And I cannot emphasize enough that each other character in the novel has more of a duty to do that because they are family to each other. Nelly is their employee. Both her responsibility and power in those situations is very limited.
Like, people will complain that she doesn't do who knows what to stop Cathy from being kidnapped. And I'm here like... she admonished her. She told Edgar about it. She tried to persuade her not to contact or visit Linton. Why would she be obligated to risk her employment and life when at the eleventh hour the stubborness of a dismissive 16 year old and the wickedness of an adult man hellbent on stealing from her make it so that she falls into a trap?
So to me a whole lot of it reeks of the "but she's like family!" mentality, that curiously doesn't extend to... you know, the several "putting her in her place" moments she goes through, and even the physical abuse she receives from both Hindley and Catherine. Suddenly they owe her nothing. I don't like it at all.
I do think it's telling that Heathcliff imprisoned Nelly when he was kidnapping Cathy 2; he was worried about her ability to save Cathy. But this is totally correct, Nelly didn't even have an obligation to stay but she stuck it out for years, mostly because she cared about Hindley and Cathy 2, partially because that's just where she worked (probably). Claiming she's a villain or worse than the rest of them is bonkers.
Yes, she comes off as somewhat arrogant and uncaring occasionally, but did you see what all those insane people were up to? You'd sound that way too!
I sat here staring at the screen like ...... for several minutes upon discovering there is a take out there that Nelly is the real villain. I just....what?
Nelly's a housekeeper. Her job is to take care of the running of the house. Dealing with whatever batshit crazy drama her employers and their friends/family/enemies are involved in is not part of the job description. Hell, she does far more than I would have in her situation. I'd have kept my head down, made sure the house was presentable, and when I got home each night, tell my friends and family, "you will never guess what shit-show went down at work today."
Good News - Bad News
Just wanted to drop a quick note. I've spoken enough about being from the South that I wanted to reassure everyone that I'm fine. I do not live in the area devastated by Helene. (But please send those folks love and light; I have friends there and what they're dealing with is awful).
I'm MIA on here a lot these days because I'm dealing with a (still unknown) illness. I have a good medical team. We've ruled a lot of stuff out so we're getting closer to solving this. But I'm exhausted a good deal of the time, and I need to use my limited energy reserves to do my job.
The thing about Phantom of the Opera is that it's literally a Scooby-Doo plot
Like. Ooooh, there's this ghooooooost haunting the Opera House but then. It is in fact. A guy in a mask.
As far as I can tell the only real difference between the Phantom and a Scooby-Doo villain is he's not trying to scare people away from the Opera House for real estate development reasons, he just has very specific artistic tastes and the desire/ability to make that everyone's problem.
(And I swear there's Scooby-Doo villains whose motive is just My Way or the Highway as well, but it's a bit less common)
And like okay I will admit I don't strictly know what happens in Phantom of the Opera? But my impression is that, in the absence of meddling kids, he does in fact get away with it. Or at least has been getting away with it for some time.
I was about to say "Christine is the meddling kid", but she doesn't actually stop him from haunting the opera house. She just gets away from her creepy stalker. I think it's implied that he continues to do it long after she leaves because he shows up at her funeral. So, he does in fact get away with it.
(there's one remake, I watched it a decade ago and it was dubbed, so I'm not entirely sure whether it was Chinese or Korean, where the phantom was in fact a ghost. The plot was otherwise the same, someone just thought, and quite rightly, that they were cheated out of a cool ghost story and put a ghost in it.)
So in the Scooby Doo episode, we'd find out singing opera is one of Daphne's hobbies and she'd fill the Christine role.
This would be especially appropriate on What's New, Scooby Doo, which did an episode where they debunked the ghosts in A Christmas Carol.

This is where the people who colonized Cabot Cove came from.
The absolutely essential aspect of these stories is complete, unbroken, total genre-blindness of all characters. If they, even momentarily, realize that their small town actually has a shockingly high murder rate, the effect is ruined. In an urban crime show like Law&Order or whatever, the cops can go to anybody on the street and say "We're investigating the murder of Jackknife Bob" and the witness is just like, "He got whacked? Oh well, I didn't do it." But in a Small Town Murder, it is absolutely imperative that everyone the detectives talked to is shocked that such a thing could happen! "Dear me, a murder? Right here in Shirefordtonstead? Good heavens!" Ma'am, it is season seven. You are the fifth proprietress of this quaint antique shop. The first three were murdered, and the fourth was the killer. In the normal, rational world, living among this high a murder rate would have a profound, dare I say traumatizing, effect on your worldview and your perception of your own safety. But you are not of the normal, rational world. Your unshakable and clearly counterfactual belief in the safety and stability in your surroundings is built into your character. And for this I love you. Never, ever change, Tiny Quaint Friendly Villages Full of Constant Murder.
There's a meta cosmic horror plot just waiting to be written about the Murder Village. Why do so many people turn murderous, and just what is keeping all these people oblivious to the weekly slaughter?

I keep coming home from SCA events and stopping at fast food restaurants. (because if I’m not actively shoving food in my mouth I’m probably hungry) Having done so, I stand in line and notice people are staring at me. For a moment, I think “Damn, I must be looking good. Everyone is checking me out.” And then I remember that I dressed as a sixth century anglo-saxon, and they probably don’t see a saxon maiden ordering french fries every day. This happens almost every time.
