I was wondering why children at school would call Will gay at the age of 12. Then I came up with this headcanon:
What if when they were even little, they got a project to name all the things they love and then read it out loud and Will wrote that he loves Mike.
Mike wrote he loves Will too but after seeing everyone's reaction he panicked and scratched that part and didn't read it out loud.
After a long time, (all the upside down things) Mike finds out the page where he wrote this and that gives him the courage to confess to Will.
