Trolls, and not the good kind.
I'm not posting this to complain, or to whine, but you have to see this. On twitter this past tuesday, I posted a version of that Hillary rant, where I said I don't care if we impeach her on 1/21/17 - got a lot of attention, both in support, and from angry Drumpfers. And one guy, I just happened to answer back, and we actually had a conversation where we landed on "you do your thing, I'll do mine, and we'll see what happens." Not exactly mutual respect, but close.
He then says "hey, I'm actually interested in your work.", and follows me.
So I'm tweeting last night about HRC's speech, and he starts replying to every tweet with insults, like ya do when you're, you know, trolling someone.
So, I block him, not because I'm afraid of him, or need a safe space, but because, why in the world would I put up with someone calling me an asshole? I wouldn't do that in real life, at a party or something, if someone kept interrupting me to insult me. Hell, I'd probably deck them.
So anyway, this tool leaves this review for me on Amazon. And it's the only thing he reviewed, which means he probably created the account just to leave it (and had to buy something to be able to review products).
Just astounding what lengths people will go to.
Amazon will probably take it down, but I'm not really sweating it. It's so vapidly transparent, and if THAT's whats going to put you off reading the book, I don't want you as a fan anyway.
I write stuff, I speak my mind. If you don't like it, there's a mute, AND a block button so you don't have to deal with me. And you don't have to buy my stuff.
End rant.

With all the bridled & unbridled animosity, bigotry & outright hate between creators, fans, & anyone with an interest, is it really worth it to get into comics? I have some stories I want to tell, but I don't want to deal with the slog/hate/stupid
Yes, it’s worth it.
The number of great people I’ve met through telling stories and working in the comic industry has far-far outweighed any bit of negativity I’ve experienced. The vast majority of professionals and readers are wonderful - hard working, supportive, caring, and kind. Even some of the people who present themselves as obstinate or nasty online are much more pleasant in person. You’re seeing their behavior through a very narrow filter.
Don’t be fooled by the muck-raking you read about or selected tweets. Like with any news, controversy grabs a lot more attention than good news stories, even though the kindness of others and love in our lives actually defines far more than fear, jealousy, or hate.
Tell stories and make friends.
Treat others as you wish to be treated.
Be inspired and inspire other people.
It’s worth it.

So, last week saw the release of Gutter Magic #4, and with that, the entire series is in your hands. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading it, and are as amazed as I am by the great work from the creative team. Brett, Jules, and Nic all gave it their A-game, and I feel really lucky to have worked with such great collaborators. I also want to thank Andy Schmidt and Chris Sotomayor for their guidance throughout, they’ve been a constant source of great advice and support. Lots of people have been asking what’s next for me, and for Gutter Magic - and it’s a great question! I wish I could share more details, but plans are underway for more comics, and other projects.
We’ll have some exciting announcements in the coming months, but just know that for now, we’re working hard to bring you more Gutter Magic!
I’m also happy to announce that IDW will be publishing a collected version of Gutter Magic this July. The book will be 120 pages, including the entire story, pinups and concept art, and the original 5-page Gutter Magic story that I self published as part of my Comics Experience Intro to Writing class project!
