The dangers of rock salt
Rock salt is commonly used as a deicing agent, on roads, driveways and sidewalks. The same qualities that help the salt break through the ice makes it deadly for your lawn. In addition to harming your existing lawn, rock salt can keep grass from growing for years. The salt prevents moisture from getting to the plant causing it to dehydrate making it turn brown and wither. It also prevents nutrients from getting to the grass plant.
Tips to Prevent Damage
- Clean away snow from the edges so less salt is needed.
- Use alternative deicing agents that are plant friendly.
- Use less rock salt around the edges of the areas that run off into the soil.
