Yes, that is the appropriate response!

And look at poor Rickert; he’s in tears. The only thing that could have made this scene better would be if Rickert echoed what Guts said to Griffith on the Hill of Swords and told him to never speak the name of the Band of the Hawk again. I don’t think Rickert is capable of hating Griffith, or anyone else for that matter; Rickert is such a sweet, gentle personality that I think that hating Griffith is beyond him. But it’s certainly not beyond Rickert to be angry with Griffith for what he’s done and disgusted with his actions.

Griffith sure can talk about dreams, can’t he? Rickert must have been amazed at his audacity, to talk to him about dreams after everything he’d done. Because this is what Rickert knows. Griffith sacrificed the lives of the Band of the Hawk to become Femto. He pursued his dream, but to do so he had to step on and over the bodies of his fallen comrades. He was christened in their blood, and he built the staircase to Falconia from their bones.

Wyndham was built on the bones of Gaiseric’s old capital. Falconia is built on bones as well. Rickert has seen many wonders since coming here, and he’s capable of acknowledging that this really is a wonderful place, a safe haven for many, but he can’t drink the Kool-aid, because he knows with what currency Griffith purchased it.

And he tells Griffith off without an ounce of rage or hate. There’s anger there, I’m sure, but anger isn’t the same thing as either rage or hate. He doesn’t have to spell out why he doesn’t forgive Griffith, but the message is clear. “I loved you. But if you can do the things you’ve done, I never knew you. You’re a stranger. You’re not the man I served. Goodbye.”

At the top of the final page, Rickert looks not unlike he did the morning after Rosine and the Count ate all the other wounded Hawks. He looks drained. But there’s another thing about it. Rickert has grown up so much throughout the course of the manga, and I think that this chapter was when he made the final transition from childhood to adulthood. This was when he realized that not hating someone didn’t mean you had to forgive them for whatever horrible thing they had done to you. This was when he realized that sometimes, you just have to cut ties.
