Girlfriend. Val scoffed at the thought, but slowly finished and turned his attention to the voice. “Uh–yeah no problem.” His shoulders rose and fell and he set his phone down on his bag. He took the boy’s hand, giving a tight grip. “Valentine, where do you want to start?” Val took his hand back and offered a small smile.

“Awesome. Some people get really iffy about it because I’m not an actual doctor yet, you know?” He asked with a smile and a half shrug as he sat down, looking at the computer screen next to him. “First things first I guess, has there actually been any problems that you’ve noticed? Anything that’s slightly off or different?” He asked as he stood up and started to look through a cupboard for the blood pressure cuff.

“Sounds like my kind of night out!” She grinned. “Is the school hosting one? Or do people just throw their own?”

“Most people generally just host their own. I suppose with the large numbers of rich kids and literal royalty that someone will host something.”

“So, this ‘New Year’ thing everyone’s talking about,” Lena started, a hopeful smile tugging at her lips. “Does it involve a party?”

“Generally yeah. A party, alcohol, you’re meant to kiss someone at midnight.”

“/English asshole,/” Ingrid retorted back in german. It was moments like these that made her eternally greatful for Allspeak.

“/Aw come on. I only get to speak German with my brother and he’s never home./” He teased, laughing to himself mostly.

“Slang is awful – just speak the language guys come on,” she said with fake irritation.

“/And what language would that be?/” Riley quipped, switching to German purely to make himself smile.

Valentine sat on the hospital bed with his phone in his hands, just checking in with Astrid and making sure their plans for the holidays were set so he would get to see her. The door opened and he didn’t look up. “Just in to get my physical done before the next semester.”

“It’s okay, you can keep texting your girlfriend, I need to do a few things first.” Riley smiled as he walked into the room, flicking through the file he had been given on the boy. All of his previous physicals had been fine and thus Riley’s higher-up had given him the job to do. Putting the file down he finally turned back to the boy, extending his hand to him. “I’m Riley, resident intern and almost-doctor, are you okay with me doing this?”

“I can understand that,” she nodded. “Helping people isn’t always easy, but it’s usually worth it in the end.”

“Exactly, that’s why I love it. That and because I can use my mutation as a good thing.”

“I guess every job has it’s drawbacks,” she laughed again. “Some are just more obvious than others. I’m sure there’s plenty of good to make up for it, though.”

“Exactly, drawbacks for mine including long hours which results in me in sleeping wherever I can. But I help people and I love that.”

“Believe me when I say: I’m certainly not a child.”

“I never said you were, kid brother is just a term to explain that Jakob is my younger brother.”

“I believe by your standards I would be about…19. I don’t think I’m that old,” she chided with an eyeroll.

“Older than my niece but the same age as my kid brother, so not that old.”

“I suppose,” she shrugged. “Although I find it hard to believe a tiny needle is more painful than falling over.” Still, what did she know? She’d never had an injection, and she knew only too well that looks could be deceiving. His next words elicited a light laugh from her. “I guess that would be almost like saying you hope they get sick again.”

“Exactly, or that I hope that they become injured again.” He smiled, shrugging casually at Aelin. “It’s okay though, part of the job.”

Valentine was taken aback, knocked a few staggered steps backwards by the other. “Jesus christ, watch where you’re going.” A groan fell past as he went to place a hand to his head. “Fucking hell, I’d be better if I hadn’t just been charged into, what’s your problem?”

“That damn-” Riley cut himself off as the dog vanished into the underbrush, completely out of sight. “Dammit. Thor is going to have my head.” He groaned, his hand moving to hold his head where he collided with the man.

“Not really, I mean I heard stories about them when I was younger, but that may been the first few decades or so. After a while they just all stopped.”

"First few- And to think I thought you were the same age as Margo."

“Oh my, I don’t think I could do that many direct family members. Oh wait, I have a shitton.” She rolled her eyes at the thought of her seemlingly endless list ofcousins and uncles and aunts.

“Did you grow up with them though, that is the question. I grew up with all of mine, except for Vater. But my niece is the same age as my brother so I hung out with them a lot.”

“Yeah,” she pushed her plate towards him, “This is why I’m glad I’m the only one of my siblings that came to Midgaurd.”

“That’s fair, I kinda have a big family so I’m used to it. I have two brothers and two sisters. The older two also have kids.” Riley took the food and finished it off happily.
