been rotating tanya degurechaff in my mind for like the past 2 weeks and im getting genuinely obsessed with this horrible fucked up anomaly of a character; she's very obviously not a good person, but her issues have fucking layers like an onion

a very tasty, radioactive onion, with a fascinating texture to it, and after chewing for a bit you start to debate yourself whether you should swallow or not

anyway ive come to the conclusion that there's actually 3 tanyas and she's functionally plural; 2 of which are obvious and basically text, and 1 which takes some explaining:

-the salaryman: name unimportant; an efficient cog in the wheels of capitalism, fully indoctrinated in its ideals. reddit atheist despite being too much of a workaholic to be online in any meaningful way. apparently had functionally no meaningful personal relationships at the time of his death, and the few childhood flashbacks we get seem to indicate his parents were emotionally distant and very focused on educational prestations and career progression, with little to no room for anything else.

tldr: lonely middle-management workaholic who might have been pitiful if he didn't suck so much

-tanya von degurechaff, the imperial mage: ruthlessly effective living weapon of mass destruction who seems to be constantly chomping at the bit to kill, while simultaneously being educated and smart enough to find legal loopholes and physical workarounds to optimise it all. an inhuman means to an inhuman end, a monster in the guise of a little girl. reliable subordinate. too reliable. capable of rationalising anything

she sucks too! she sucks so bad! peel back the rationalisations and almost all you're left with is a deeply egotistical mass murderer!

which is where the third tanya comes in. the least noticeable one unless you're paying attention. but she's there.

-the little girl: the previous 2 tanyas focus on the monster within the little girl, but the further you read the more obvious it becomes that there's also an *actual* little girl here, the actual 幼女, even if we never explicitly hear or see her. not overtly, never overtly. always hidden behind those afformentioned rationalisations, just as much if not moreso than the atrocities! but she's there, the emotional truth between the horrible moral framework and egotistical self-centeredness she keeps emphasising is definitely her only motivation. she doesn't care about anyone else. definitely not. she's risking her life to protect her "meatshields" for selfish and rational reasons, you must understand. she doesn't care at all. she is perfectly rational. she is perfectly rational. she is perfectly rational. she remains perfectly rational and has always been perfectly rational. she hasn't changed at all. she will not be changed. any changes were made for rational reasons only. she's rational. reason. facts and logic. reason. logic. facts.

my opinion on the (post-war) tanya ships ive seen so far

-grantz/tanya: some of the fics ive read are cute and grantz absolutely has a crush on her but i genuinely don't see a scenario where it would be a mutual thing

-visha/tanya: very much supported by canon, absolutely mutual, also yuri and therefore awesome. by far the ship that makes most sense as far as actual attraction and character dynamic goes. borderline canon. the main negative is this would be a situation where tanya is genuinely happy. the narrative does not allow her to be happy. therefore i can only assume that if they fully committed in canon, visha would die (or worse) soon afterwards. that or tanya finally kicking the bucket right when she's happy of course

-tanya/lergen: objectively hilarious, also weirdly plausible in the most ass-backwards 4d mental chess deathnote-style bullshit marriage of convenience way, and it's perfectly conducive to the ongoing efforts of the narrative to fuck both of them over in obtuse self-inflicted ways. they'd simultaneously be miserable and perfect for eachother. not as cool as visha/tanya but it makes up for it by being way funnier

-tanya/romel: they are terrifyingly, horribly compatible and in sync. they enable eachother's worst impulses by covering for the other's pitfalls and ineptitudes. canonically were both disappointed to have central command station them on different fronts. they're perfect for eachother. they should not be allowed to exist on the same continent

Tumblr user @sexy-people-contests-2026 posts the first round of their tumblr sexy jester/clown poll bracket. Entries were collected via community form, in which a user submitted vtuber Gavis Bettel.

April 3

Cover Corporation (parent company of Hololive Production) announces that they are downsizing their male vtuber branch, Holostars. Company support is almost entirely pulled from their 12 Japanese talents. Fans of their 10 English talents worry that they could be next on the chopping block. A larger discussion on how these talents are marketed by the company also begins.

April 7

Bettel wins his first round against Laughing Jack and moves onto the next round. In this next match up he is put against Shadow Milk Cookie from Cookie Run Kingdom.

April 8

Gavis Bettel hits 200k subscribers on YouTube.

April 9

Twitter users are made aware of the poll. Users start coming back to their old tumblr accounts or create new ones to start voting for Bettel.

April 10

Bettel becomes aware of the poll.

He also becomes a popular pick for people who are mad at the writing decisions made in Cookie Run Kingdom.

People also start making joke ship art between Bettel and Shadow Milk (bettelmilk)

April 15

Bettel wins the second round and moves on to round three.

In this round he is put against Pomni from The Amazing Digital Circus.

He talks about the poll bracket on his Week in Review stream and admits he has never used tumblr. Viewers inform him of classic tumblr memes and stories. He also asks the social media team from Bandai Namco America (they often appear in his chat) to get on their defunct tumblr to vote for him (they can't access the account).

April 18

Bettel has an unarchieved karaoke stream to celebrate 200k subscribers, the runner of the of the polls tunes in.

April 19

The official Holostars EN twitter and Instagram accounts make ominous posts about the poll since they are unable to directly link to it due to company policy.

April 20-21

Bettel makes one last rallying cry to see if he can get people to vote for him. He receives endorsements from other vtubers including Elira Pendora, Shu Yamino, and Yu Q. Wilson.

The illustrator for his vtuber model, Senzaki Makoto, also becomes aware of the poll and says she will draw him if he wins the bracket.

April 22

With a rally of support from across the vtuber fan sphere, Bettel is able to beat Pomni.

Fans jokingly say that this poll bracket has done more for advertising Bettel than his company has and also joke that it could save Holostars from further budget cuts. In the semi-final round he is against April from Monster Prom. The poll will end April 29.

Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.

If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.
