Enver Gortash was forced to grow up as a theatre kid against his will and he makes it everyone's problem. His pointy-collared coat gives him a mindflayer silhouette. His jewelry/armor is covered in illithids and devils (that look like the ones in the house in the Hells where he was enslaved) and weird cunty vagina teeth-flowers. He is the Queen of Camp. The only acceptable answer to "is this too much?" is "it isn't nearly ENOUGH." He COMMISSIONS ARTWORK based off of DREAMS he has and runs an UNDERWATER PRISON IN A SUNKEN BHAALIST TEMPLE that would make a Bond villain sick with envy, and forces you to accept his Teams calls on his secret submarine just so he can throw a tantrum at you. He doesn't outright kill the people he truly despises because he needs them to suffer as long and poetically as possible. He is BEGGING everyone to see through the facade and appreciate the artistry, the irony, the thematic resonance. Those memoirs he was outlining? He was absolutely going to commission a musical to be made from them and it was going to be so much better than that dogshit 'Devil's Deal'. The only thing this bitch is missing is a leitmotif.

Durge saying “For what it’s worth, I think I always liked you too. But this is how it must be.” genuinely catches him off guard.

When they walk in there he's ready to kill them- they dismantled his Steel Watch, he says so himself that any hope for an alliance fell with it. Any other line of dialogue just results in him snapping at them and starting combat- but that one makes him hesitate for just a second. Maybe it’s just me, but he sounds genuinely wounded when he says "is that what you- [think]”

Then the brain shakes and it gives him enough time to gather himself and pivot back to the point at hand, which is not going into half manic monologue about how close the two of them used to be.

Something about getting him to break like that is everything to me. For half a second it doesn't feel like he has a plan- you're not talking to the witty tyrant who has already thought in depth from every angle on how to handle this (because he probably didn't) you're talking to a guy who let one person get close to him and isn't nearly as okay with this betrayal as he wants to be.

And that's nifty.
